Wow, Stewart is an absolute madlad! Logic probe and logic pulser? Those are an absolutely amazing gift for someone interested in low-level repairs and refurbishment of 16 and 32-bit computers, and it can help you track down where bodges need to be implemented. Truly a stunning amount of generosity.

What a wonderful set of gifts from Stewart what a lovely guy. I really enjoyed this video Adrian thank you. The Commodore Plus 4 was my first ever computer so I have a soft spot for it and was glad to see that it worked. The C116 was to me the most interesting though as it's so rare even though it's probably the worst of the systems due to the keyboard. It's a really rare machine though. Although on sale in Europe I never saw one in the UK (I think most were sold in Germany) so nice to see one and that it has gone to such a good home. It really does amaze me how many 8-bit machines Commodore produced. Thank you Adrian and Stewart.

It's amazing to me how much time and resources Commodore wasted on some computers, but it also gave us more to talk about and enjoy, and for collectors to collect, so it's all good.

50:00 I had two or three SX-64. Bought in about 1984 at a Clearance Center store in Omaha, NE. if a Commodore Modem was plugged into User port it would burn out the Internal Power Supply. After that would happen I would take it back to Clearance center for a refund. After second or third time powe supply fried, I instead got a C128. It was a very cool unit, with its little color screen.

I was looking forward to watching this tonight to help me fall asleep. My girlfriend and I had to go get a human malware test today because she's a teacher and woke up this morning without a sense of smell. It's been a stressful day, especially as a chronic cough I have from acid reflux seems to become more frequent. This should take my mind off that and help me get some rest. Stay safe!

Coincidentally, we found the c16 in the loft just a month or two ago. I didn't trust the psu so I used a different generic supply. But after 20 odd years in the loft, it's working perfectly. Even the dataset still worked and loads the tapes, which were also in the loft, without a problem. It's the machine that my Dad bought in the 80s and the only one I used for many years. Learned quite a lot about them from this channel that made a lot of my memories make sense 😊

If you were wondering the European style aerial connector is generally called a "Belling-Lee" connector after the British company who invented it, originally only designed for MF up to ~1.5Mhz but naturally ended up being used for much higher frequencies.

Have a Amiga 500 and a Amiga 2000 with a very small HD . The HD was so large when I first bought it . Saved sticking in work bench disk's on boot up :) So much fun way back in the day with D-paint . First time I connected a modem I found my transmit cheap was dead . That was pre internet time and google what to do. Managed to find a computer repair and parts store .Guy knew just what I needed and sold me both the receive and transmit chips . Was a very intense time for a guy with no training to replace a chip on beloved machine. Worked ! Got many years of service out of it calling a BBS .

That German-made VIC-20 was probably made for surrounding countries (NL/BE/etc) or it would have been called a 'VC-20'.
The VIC-20 that I own (also my first computer) is very similar, from 1st half of 81 (blocky PET-keyboard still) and has serial no 'WG C 1057' versus this one 'WG B 57XXX'. So the C series apparently came before the B series... The label is (I suspect) the first style for vic20s from that factory. The round blue stickers on all the big chips are on mine too. Extra quality check?
    Funny, these similarities.

The C16 was my first retro computer. Found it in my dad's drawer in 1997, he also barely used it. I was used to IBM compatibles and reading in the manual that you hook it up to your TV blew me away. After some making fun of how primitive the machine is, I actually typed in a few programs and then... well... I taught myself to program using this machine. After many years someone got me a few games (Big Mac and Danger Zone are my favourites), and I put it in my car with a small B/W TV until one day I must've hit that power switch when shifting stuff around and the next day the battery was drained and the computer was dead.
(also, a few years ago I picked one out of a dumpster and it worked fine. Put it away for a month, got it out of storage, it worked, but when I went to fetch a disk drive it had crashed and died.)
I've never seen a ceramic TED!

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck ปีที่แล้ว

I feel the same way, but then I think about what other computer companies did back then, when personal/home/family computers were new and they were all feeling their way around almost blindly. Maybe Commodore still takes the cake for doing weird things, but for example Apple had the disastrous, ill-conceived-in-every-way Apple III, and even the IIc didn't sell anywhere near as well as they thought it would. People don't think much about the Apple III anymore, and hardly any are available today, but that just goes to show how massive of a failure it was, especially when we factor in the high expectations Apple had for it. Additionally, it was almost an Apple II, but incompatible, which represents a Commodore level of stupidity on the part of Apple. Then we have IBM with, among other failures that almost no one remembers, the infamous PCjr and its Chiclet keyboard and other strange limitations. Atari stuck with the same 8-bit computer architecture and made fewer mistakes on that side (although I still think it's weird how the 1050 drive went to 130 kB instead of true double density MFM at 180 kB), but there is no excuse for any aspect of their 5200 console (e.g. bad controllers, deliberately superficially incompatible with the 8-bit computers, released too late, worse game selection than the 8-bit computers, no 2600 compatibility). Do I even need to mention the computer misadventures of Mattel and Coleco?

I have become such a commodore fan. I never had one as a kid but if I were offered it as a kid I would have.
I am so happy with seeing them and learning about them.

I am so jealous of that SX-64 (apart from the damaged SID!). I have always wanted one of those, but good examples of them go for hundreds of pounds over here, and I don't have the expertise to take on a non-working one.
Thank you for the awesome content that you provide. Without a doubt you are my favourite retro-computer channel. Have a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

You know, I was looking forward to a happy Christmas but after seeing this video, it's going to have to be an envious one because: look at all that cool Commodore stuff! That's like a dream of mine to have those machines (as in the 264 series and the SX64; already have a C128). Anyway, great video as always, and happy Holidays everyone.

Those were the times when there was no such thing like “these software are so hard to use” but you were “too stupid” to use the computer properly. 😁
