I have no idea why Georgian history is so overlooked (at least in the west). In my opinion, the story of Georgia is the best and genuinely one of the craziest, filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows. Thank you so much for bringing this overlooked history into the spotlight.
I agree, the problem is, because the extensive attacks the nation has faced... Really little, of the actual factual history survives. Much of the sources and the most important sites of culture like the Vardzia library have been burnt and destroyed by the invaders... It's really sad, Georgian history from 10th to 15th centuries are really interesting... But from 16th to 19th it's extremely stale and uninteresting. The nation just goes into stagnation, being a battlefield or tossed around between Persia, Ottomans and finally Russia, with a couple exceptions like the Bakhtrioni uprising being really interesting. I suppose a lack of proper and prosperous modern history is also a reason why it's so overlooked. We never had industrialization and were just some random backwater province of Russia and played mild roles in anti-Ottoman wars and the Russo-japanese. The true interesting modern history of Georgia starts in 1914, because the Caucasian front of WWI *IS* extremely interesting and underrated, even among WWI fans. Then the 1918-1921 history is even more interesting, with the democratic republic of Georgia fending off attacks from Russian whites and Ottomans, engaging against Azerbaijan, fighting over Lori with Armenia, and overall doing a lot in very little time- _and then we're off to the Soviet times._ WWII never touched Georgia, which is frankly a good thing, but the area was mostly just left alone to economically develop. And since the 90s it's been a stagnant and economically struggling 2nd world country, especially since the Caucasus Wars of 1991-1993, which were basically a compact version of the Yugoslav Wars. And yeah, that's about the extent of our modern history. Old stuff is epic, but the nation's been in downard spiral and stagnation ever since Timur the *LAME* wiped out 4/5 of the population. We were cursed in one of the worst Geopolitical locations in human history, between a dozen empire and nomadic conqueror hotspots.

it's crazy how a regional superpower like kingdom of georgia got taken by storm of mongol invasions in a snap of a finger, it really goes to show how no one had any idea how to combat their battle tactics.
That is true, but at the same time, the kingdom was in decline 1220s when mongols first appeared as an expeditionary force. Weakened central power led to internal feudal treachery and betrayal at the battle of Garni against jalal ud din in 1225, and following events effectively ended Georgia's regional dominance. It could not put up any organised resistance when mongols came to stay in 1235.
George the I was definitely one of the worst rulers of Georgia. it's not like he was weak or had no talent in battle or diplomacy, but his priorities were completely out of hand. upon his coronation both Kakheti and Hereti exited the kingdom. instead of unifying Georgia he started a war with a superpower. if fighting eastern rome wasn't hard enough already fighting it with basil at its' head is just insane.

Great list, although I'd put Bagrat V in S tier. I mean the man was dealt with the worst cards out of everyone on the list, even worse than Rusudan or Lasha-Giorgi, and he somehow still held the country together. Not saying that Timurid Empire was more powerful than Mongols, but the way Timur wanted to destroy Georgia, and has repeatedly put 100% of his efforts into his Caucasian invasions... Mongols never invaded with such intensity. Bagrat V was the nemesis of one of the greatest conquerors of all time, survived his captivity (and freed his family), outsmarted him (multiple times) and ultimately defeated him and didn't let him subjugate his country while he was alive. Not to mention he was a fantastic diplomat, he manipulated Golden Horde into military alliance by having them unknowingly invade the Timurids...
Yeah I agree on that facts that he did that, but because of that efforts he should have anticipated that timur was bigger nightmare than horde,so he should have sided with timur instead of golden horde and that was possible, because timur wanted lands of golden horde,so georgia was in strategic position on the map and bagrat could have helped by giving timur his army for the invasion in golden horde, which would deescalate the relationship between timur and georgia, timur even tried to get in that postion but as much as we know bagrat refused,by that he put his people's life in danger, eventually,he mustn't be in S tier,my opinion.
@@Stanismannis123 But you forget the most important thing. Before the sacking of Tbilisi, Timur had invaded Georgia already (not himself but his forces from Karabakh, before he even arrived in Caucasus himself), he even sent messages through those forces warning the Georgians to give up and welcome him, and accept Islam. So Bagrat made the alliance with the Horde while Timurid forces were already pillaging east Georgia. Everything else that happened between Bagrat and Timur was after the sacking, which was then the 1st invasion of Timur himself but he had already made it known Georgia was his target through constant skirmishes and direct messages. With the Khan of the Horde at the time, Bagrat saw the only possible ally in desparate times, considering there was the warlord who had already destroyed multiple, stronger nations and turned them into ash, who had sent his forces to pillage and weaken the country to prepare for his imminent attack. It's not like his alliance with the Horde prompted Timur's invasion, it's the opposite, Timur's aggression was unprovoked, and the alliance with the Horde was a defensive measure. Also, Timur was literally regarded as sword of Islam, and carried out mass population cleansings against non-Muslims everywhere, including Georgia, so the idea that he would accept any alliance with a Christian kingdom doesn't make sense to me.
@@brettervonkanada6102oh,I forgot that and yeah,in those times religion had the biggest infuence,so i get your opinion, timur was crazy guy too and he couldn't be trusted thats fair point from my view, but siding with the horde made timur more aggrresive towards georgian people and because of that he destroyed georgia many times, the main point is timur still invade georgia and bagrat couldn't stop him,so he cant be in S tier because of that
Cool list but bagrat 3 technically got the kingdom of aphxazia from his uncle theodos 3 the blind and David kurapalat was not his uncle he was a distant relative
@ that is true but my grading was really all about this one question. Did they leave Georgia better than he found it? While heroic, Georgia was not in such a good place by the time he died
In my eyes George I firmly belongs in *A* tier. He spent his entire life at war with *ROME,* you know, _ACTUAL BLOODY ROME,_ at its peak since like the 6th century and with one of its greatest leaders, and despite fighting such an all-powerful and unimaginably brutal emperor who had no problem just blinding entire populations on his whim, he managed to get his own way in many regards, and defended the nation very efficiently. Also he has one of the most interesting reigns of all the Georgian kings, very turbulent but unique in the types of enemies he was facing, yet still surviving with a territorially integral nation. I highly disagree with your placement. Saying ''I almost put him in C tier because he _ALMOST_ defeated Basil'' is absolutely ludicrous, that's like putting Hannibal in D-tier because he ''almost defeated the Romans.'' Granted, he certainly wasn't a perfect ruler, but when you get such an exceptional novel as Grandmaster's Right Hand written about your reign and all you've accomplished -(even though I believe the book does a bit of a misjustice to his characters, George certainly wouldn't have been as horny and jealous XD),- I don't think you're just _some random king._ You're truly a great ruler. Overall great video yet again, I love how much you enjoy Georgian history, super rare for somebody to even _know_ about Georgia as a modern entity, let alone its history at this extent. Good job.
One thing of disagreement here with me would be Rusudan by many regarded as the worst king of georgia one example being when georgians were holding tbilisi she gave the order to surrender and give the city over to khwarazm shah witch led to a big massacre also she did her best to disinherit Giorgis Firstborn son for her sons benefit and the battle of Garnisi the main one with khwarazm was not in their favor all that much and could have easily been won by good leadership
@@StoicHistorian OO yes one thing was about that man i think yo might not have heard is he actually abandoned the seljuk army when the Seljuks gave him the army to take Kakheti he thought about this and said he could not spill Georgian blood using a foreign army and went hunting just left witch was a rather foolish move but it was sentimental in the manner that he just Couldnt help seljuks invade a georgian territory like this despite how it would have been more benefitial for him
Great video, but several rulers missing, like two simultanous kings after Rusudan, David VI, and David VII, Demetrius II, Vakhtang IV(after Giorgi V briliant, very short reign), and last king of united Georgian Kingdom, Georgi VIII
I didn’t count the David’s because they were co kings at the same time and never really had any power because the mongols. Vakhtang yes too short to judge. And George viii shared the kingship with his brothers most the time
@@StoicHistorian I see your point, however David VI was very much independent after few years of rule, he started a rebelion against mongols and efectively ruled western Georgia independently, Mongols really didn't have any influence in the west Georgia and only had control on the eastern part. Also David VI restored the Georgian leaning political party in the empire of Trebizond, so he had quite infuencial foreign policy as well. David VII also rebeled but it was quicky defeated because almost all Georgian nobility was against it, he was lucky though because Golden horde attacked Hulagu at the same time and David VII helped Hulagu against them so his rebelion was forgotten.
Rusudan sucked. It's not that she couldn't do much. It's that rusudan was driven by greed. Wanted her son as king not nephew. Which split georgia even more. She was worst ruler in my opinion.
@@StoicHistorian It wasn't just mongols though, her biggest test was against Jalal ad Din and she just wasn't fit to rule Georgia in complicated sutuations, Georgia was already broken when Mongols arrived. Probably the reason why Georgia was not erased from the face of earth, because it no longer could mount any kind of resistance against them.
@@StoicHistorian nah I don't believe she had that type of potential even if here brother ruined the Georgien legacy of daviti(oh do I hate him for that)

@@brettervonkanada6102 Bagrat v in s tier is definitely a possibility
@@Casual3745 oh right, this is my bad it’s been awhile since I covered Bagrat iii
Dudes Tier listing my ancestors 😆😆😆
bro George VII is S tier
@@bestlobjagamer348 he did try his best, I will give him that
@StoicHistorian not his best, he did what would be best in that situation.
@ that is true but my grading was really all about this one question.
Did they leave Georgia better than he found it?
While heroic, Georgia was not in such a good place by the time he died
The name of the Country is Saqartvelo. have look at Pharnavaz king of Saqartvelo.
@@TimChib yes I know, but more people outside of saqartvelo know the country as georgia
Good job.
I see what you’re saying, but almost in books doesn’t really count especially when you lose
@@StoicHistorian So by that logic, Hannibal truly is a D tier general.
@ yeah but like he’s not anywhere close to hannibals skill level
George III is underrated because Tamar is after him?
@@TrajGreekFire partly, he’s more so underrated because he doesn’t get talked about like David iv or Tamar do
One thing of disagreement here with me would be Rusudan by many regarded as the worst king of georgia one example being when georgians were holding tbilisi she gave the order to surrender and give the city over to khwarazm shah witch led to a big massacre also she did her best to disinherit Giorgis Firstborn son for her sons benefit and the battle of Garnisi the main one with khwarazm was not in their favor all that much and could have easily been won by good leadership
@@houby1632 worse than George II?
@@StoicHistorian OO yes one thing was about that man i think yo might not have heard is he actually abandoned the seljuk army when the Seljuks gave him the army to take Kakheti he thought about this and said he could not spill Georgian blood using a foreign army and went hunting just left witch was a rather foolish move but it was sentimental in the manner that he just Couldnt help seljuks invade a georgian territory like this despite how it would have been more benefitial for him
I think you were too hard on George Vll. He survived Timur trying to literally genoc*de tge georgians. The guy deserves A tier.
I see that but still, country got destroyed
@@StoicHistorian i guess that's also a factor,yeah.
Giorgi I is underrated
🇬🇪🇬🇪⚔️⚔️🖤🖤
Rusudan sucked. It's not that she couldn't do much. It's that rusudan was driven by greed. Wanted her son as king not nephew. Which split georgia even more. She was worst ruler in my opinion.
Don't forget she burned Tbilisi to repel Mongols.
David read the Quran bro. Wise man
1. Ismail I
Demetre must be atleast B
I really disagree withe your opinion on rusudan she was delt a bad hand but she just threw here card at the enemas like moon knights "bullshit" attack
I see what you’re saving, I think under better circumstances she’s could’ve been another Tamar, but mongols man, mongols
@@StoicHistorian nah I don't believe she had that type of potential even if here brother ruined the Georgien legacy of daviti(oh do I hate him for that)
More of this content style please!!!! Armenian kings next?
Was thinking about that but wow, that would be a huge video and I don’t know allll the kings so a lot research, maybe someday tho
@ Hmmmmm. Perhaps just a compilation of the most significant/notable ones? (That’s still a lot though) either way keep up the content man. Your channel covers a criminally underrated part of the world on YT.
@ my boy gudea the historian has an Armenian ranking video like that if you’d like to check that out, he’s very knowledgeable.
