Also also, I talked about my perspective on sponsors in a community post a couple days ago. it's funny to me that Overlord is technically a Duocon Like Flywheels and Battletrap but much larger and without the automorph gimmick. Always loved him- I am personally more of a Japanese SixShot/Greatshot kind of guy myself but Overlord would be a close second to me in terms of design and presence.
For whatever it's worth, I was also pretty disappointed in how IDW treated Star Saber; but, I feel they made up for it with Deathsaurus, who by comparison was inspired by the Victory manga. I feel that was more respectful than, yknow, a chatroom headcanon from the 90s... And anyways, that shouldn't take away from how well they did Overlord, too. Man's a fucking beast in the comic lmao.
If you want an idea of why people love Overlord lately, it's mostly because of his incarnation in IDW. IDW Overlord...is the most irredeemable MONSTER in those comics. Rebuilt to be an unstoppable goliath of a Decepticon that could easily destroy worlds on their own. The moment he arrives, someone IS going to die, Autobot and/or Decepticon. All he cares about in the war is literally just killing whoever he wants with the most sh!t-eating of grins you can imagine. He's a complete psychopath. And he's obsessed with fighting Megatron to the death because Megatron was the only one to defeat him in gladitorial matches, over and over again in fact. And when I say obsessed, I MEAN *OBSESSED.* In fact, when he learned that Megatron had died, he had an existential crisis and lost the will to live, leading to him getting captured and just wanted someone to kill him. He couldn't comprehend living in a universe where he didn't get the chance to finally defeat Megatron at last. Then Chromedome had the bright idea of telling him that Megatron still lives, which immediately reverted Overlord into the gleeful psycopath he was before his depression. That is until Megatron had revealed he had defected to the Autobots because of how much he regretted his past actions and how tired he was of being the Megatron of the past. Overlord saw this change of heart as...disgusting and just gave up on his quest to defeat Megatron with how easy it would be put him down now. Overlord then wandered around the universe without purpose for a bit. Bored as hell because the one person that would've given his life meaning (by killing Megs) has become a shell of what he once was. So Overlord did the most logical thing he could and worked with Tarantulus so the spider can make a time machine that Overlord can use to go back in time to fight Megatron when he was in his prime and still was the bloodthirsty tyrant we know. This ended up as his downfall as he died by having his tank half be sent to the past and his jet half sent to the future thanks to the Wreakers.
