How to test and replace reverse light switch VW Golf 1.9tdi

If your reversing lights not working or stuck in position ON, likely you have a problem with reverse light switch. This video shows how to test and replace it on example of Volkswagen Golf Mk4 1.9tdi.
There is a chance that your Golf Mk4 1.9tdi can have different switch, although testing it would be the same.

Thanks for this help. Reversing lights not coming on, took the switch out and wd 40 both ends and it works now fine. I did note that the ignition had to be on and in reverse (obviously engine not running :) ) to make the reversing lights come on. Switch off the ignition and the lights won't work. I guess the bayonet button plunger contact gets corroded and was cleaned with the wd and working it in and out a few times. Cheers

What about if the light comes on when the gear is selected, but then goes off again straight away? Still likely the same part?

If it's a manual gearbox, these switches are normally simple mechanical switches that get pressed when reverse gear is selected. It doesn't even go through ECU, that's why car doesn't notify you when something wrong with reversing light. They can be different type, I have like 3 different videos on my channel... So yes, if I would have this problem - reverse light switch is the first thing I would look for.

No. Type of reverse switch depends on type if a gearbox, and Mk4 was coming out with so many different engines and gearboxes. I know good website listing all part numbers for VAG's, check it out, hopefully it will help you:
