What a killer sounding little beast, always love to see Laney content. Sounded great throughout but to me it really came alive with the EVH cab & Les Paul. Great video as always,

My L5 lost a ton of volume and clarity, changed to new valves, still the same so will try your tip with the fuse, thanks for posting

I have owned a few Laeny amps like the tt lc and vc over the years around 40 years actually, thank you for the very good tips regarding the HT fuse and replacing tubes valves with quality valves. I bought this amp because I needed a lower wattage amp for a brand new Studio after termites had eatten my roof trusts. Devastated I rebuilt a sound proofing and acousticly designed professional Studio. What his has done is allowed the little Laney LT5 Head made me sell off 2 fender amps because she was that good. I also bought the LT 20 head and to my suprise I bought the Lionheart IRT 60 head because the owner didn't like the red light ???? Another ripper of an amp but you need to know about how to eq the amp to get the best out of it.

Excellent amp for classic rock and the Laney cab is built very well

Just picking one up. You have a 20 watt Marshall by the looks of things. I want one of those next. Similar taste. I sold my L5T5 watt combo and L20T 2X12 20 watt.

Didn't get the Marshall but built a Plexi 50 watt small box from Modulus. I need look no further!

At 7:50 the correct term is "Tone Control", simple as that, at max it allows all the highs to pass, at minimun It cut the trebble always in a musical way (you can dime the control or set at min and It will sound musical, the difference between the trebble control ot the eq section and the tone control is that it operates at the power section not the preamp. so with that control you can cut harsh overtones from overdrive pedals or ice pick sounds from a trebbly guitar/pickup at the very last stage of amplification. Very effective control, It´s not a presence control at all and it complement well with the trebble control of the Eq. A well designed amp. With guitar volume closed It´s so silent that you can´t tell It´s on. No hiss, hum, nothing.

I love my Laneys I have an IRT studio which has amazing clean and crunch channels and a solid lead channel. I recently landed an AOR series II which has a lower gain ( green) channel that absolutely kills. The red (AOR) channel is a bit dark when I have the eq set how I like the Green channel but i love the extra gain. the amp is a bit weird in the way the gain pots for the two channels work with the switching, and i can't quite get my head around it. It would be totally cool if you could do a video walking thru the signal flow of the preamp of this beast.

from Laney support. check the serial number letter code on the amp. if the third letter is an A it'll be a UK type

Hi, It can hadle both single coils and humbackers, It has a lot of Eq and tone shaping controls, Just flipping the briht switch you can plug an LP with the exact Eq settings of a Strat, you´ll have to adjust the volume or gain, the sound is huge both clean and dirt. You can change channels from a foot pedal (clean and overdrive) It has shared Eq but you can set gain and master for It channel. The dirt channel has a lot of gain, more than you´ll ever need. Not even a tube screamer needed for that. In fact I plug straight into the amp, eventually a delay pedal in the loop. I use it with an LP , a Strat and a Tele, It sound great with all 3 gutars. My buddy likes metal and he connected his Ibanez with a Boss dist pedal (don´t recall the model now) he was amazed.

Know this is an old vid so you may not remember, but was the Helix set up in 4 cable method? Really tempted by one of these little heads. Looks pretty seamless to go between cabs and IRs?

  • @gerardoromano3436
    @gerardoromano3436 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Why not connect the amp to a real cab with a real speaker and an inexpensive mic like the Shure SM57, The Helix alone costs more than the speaker+cab+mic+sound card or external sound device (you only need 1 HI Z input for the mic a level control and a usb out to your PC or MAC). Just my two cents.

In the flesh the amp is not as bright as in the video. It´s a very balanced sound. It CAN sound bright or dark but with Eq and Tone Control at 12 o´clock It doesn´t sound as bright as in this video, even with a tele bride pickup with the tone full open. It has a lot of bass and mids when nedeed, I use It for jazz with a tele in the neck position or an old Epi LP. It sounds great with humbackers and single coils. For blues and rock an LP in the bridge or neck pos is heaven.

Is the usb recording sound with IRs a legit recording tone or does it feel lacking compaered to going through speakers?

      Yes it’s very good

@@RDamps compared to the vst options these days? A lot of people swear by DSP stuff but I don't feel it at all. I'm hoping this will get me that tube tone without stripping paint off the walls. Obviously in the context of a mix I don't mind it being not quite as good as a miced princeton. But it would have to be a step up over what's offered digitally through vsts to be worth the investment.

I have the combo 1x12" The transformers ar large and heavy like a 20w amp. It has a huge choke to filter the noise from the power supply and mains, (It looks like a transformer but It´s a coil). The amp wights 22Kg (about 49 pounds) and is as large as a Vox AC15. Great amp, If you don´t know the power rating you would never tell it´s 5W, The one in the video is made in China, The UK version (mine) is better still, real spring reverb, and the tubes or valves are not PCB mounted , are mounted in the chassis like a Marshall so the heat don´t burn the main board. Same iron BTW. UK version is discontinued and only avalable in combo 1x 12. The 20W version was available in both head and cab (made in UK)

Borrowed the 5w Studio head off a mate .
Week later bought a UK built combo
Owned shed loafs vintage over the years
For playing at home it’s an awesome little amp .
