Just so we're clear, the soundtrack didn't win an Oscar because it was good music, though for me (and certain others) it was such. It won because it fit the tone of the movie so damn perfectly.
This worked SO well in the scenes that it was used in...the beginning of it was used when Eduardo was writing the algorithm on their dorm window (and at squeaky sound it uses mixed SO DAMN well...made the song sound like it was part of the window). hard to explain....
I recognized it at the beginning too and couldn't place the guitar riff until just now. I didn't know Trent Reznor did the soundtrack for both until I heard the similarity.
Armed Forces Network used this song for a while on an advertisement about depression or something. It was the most surreal things I've seen in a while.
@sierracosworth44 the reason for the reocurring themes is because action films like inception require more music, and he cant make themes for all 2 and a half hours of the film. still i think both are great
@gransabermezo both dark electronic scores by some of the best electronic producers of the past 20 years, both created for fincher films,so its not all that surprising really.
@123abc78641 No it's not, "In Motion" Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is the hacking scene. This song starts just as Edwardo is writing the algorithm on the window at kirkland, and continues while everyone is on facemash
@SuperMrLahlou inceptions theme is great, but as always with Mr Zimmer, overall the music seems a bit like multiple copy & past of 2 to 3 different themes. Zimmer is a genius for "finding" themes. If you listen to "the dream is collapsing" 3 minutes, it's just fantastic. If you listent to the whole OST, you quickly get bored. By comparison, TSN OST is a brilliant music album, atmospheric, original, everytime surprising. THAT is the reason this won an oscar.

This tune reminds me of a video game song, but I just can't remember which one. Might be from super meat boy.

After watching this movie, I felt an odd urge to start coding...for like days, lol.
