Which "old man" do you mean? After one minute running time there is a picture of a kalari gurukkal, named Sami gurukkal, who passed away eight years ago... And later on the white haired man is the father of the young tablamaker

I really enjoyed your film, it was very nice camera work at times. These carnatic tablas have puris or skins similar to that of the mridangam and therefore i find them a bit less sophisticated than the Nirth Indian classical tabla but the bayan (bass drum) seemed similar to the northern baya. I did once get some tabla heads from Chennai which were made like Northern ones & they had a fantastic sound but they are impossible to acquire in the west unless someone (like u !) took them back nice work

Thought, I xplained it in my narration. A paste of boiled rice mixed with wood-coal-dust, has 2b rubbed on the drumskin 2 provide its special sound and the layers have same purpose. Method of taking 2 iron rings is no good for precise tuning. I as well use the 2 rings, but this is just for raw tuning. With a little hammer they tune their drums shortly be4 playing and even during short pauses so 4 the Indian taste of pefection, a tabla has 2b built that way. 4 Indian the price of a tabla is high

But that is just it, it's not a western drum! There are not more western patterns! Tabla is a very ancient concept evolved from a wooden drum called pakhawaj, which was a 2 headed drum. The story says that the pakhawaj was sawed in 2, giving birth to tabla, and later the dagga (bass) was made out of copper or brass. It's a very old and precise tradition from a very ancient and rich culture! The syahi (patch) is there, so that drum can resonate the way it does, and for the strokes played on it.

because the kinaar hasn't been completely cut...they dont cut kinaar in one go...but rather cut closely in multiple turns n in the end you get the actual shape of kinaar👍
