Dude this show deserves same popularity as Breaking Bad, House of Cards, or Doctor Who. It's got one of the most original ideas for tv show, great actors for awesome characters. Broke my heart when Carter died thou
I love how we hear the monitor beeping at the beginning symbolizing John's survival and then at the end of the episode we see the monitor again except, this time, it's Simmons heartbeat and it flat-lines, signaling his death. I love this show.
This Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down Boy, when Elias true colors are revealed The Kills - Future Starts So Slow, when they revealed that shaw didnt die Daughter - Medicine, when they were running from the cops in washington dc and left us thinking they had comited murder Pink Floyd - Welcome To The Machine, when the machine is shutting down and talks to Harold The Kills - No Wow, season five's awesome opening The National - Fake Empire, when the team gets all back together in the place where it all started Metamorphosis One, "everyone dies alone" speech, the machine's last words on the show and john's sacrifice
They really did on this show. Excellent music selections to accompany the tone of the scene. All ranges of emotion. All genres of music. Phenomenal work.
they really show how carter's death affects them. Her son is devastated, Fusco lost a colleague who believed that he could be a good man. Finch lost a friend who had helped him since he and Reese had started working. Shaw has gone psychotic searching for her killer. And Reese.....Reese has turned cold after this, wanting nothing but vengeance for his fallen friend. This is how characters should react, this really is great writing and filming, and not a single word was muttered
+THE CROW gaming Pretty amazing direction. I'll bet even those who never saw a single episode would have no trouble figuring out everything that's going on here without a word spoken.
Actually this was probably THE best 4 minutes of TV for the year. The power of the images and the depth of the accompanying song was a near perfect match. I can not get over it.
Regardless of how many times I see this opening, I still manage to sob like the first time. Brilliant writing, brilliant choice of music and brilliant show.
I still remember the day after this aired, the first line of a review I read was "how the fuck and I supposed to review that." Because they were in awe of how good that 3 partner was.
A genuinely beautiful piece of television. Truly artistic. This one segment is proof that this show has really upped it's game and entered a whole new league of TV show. Huge props to the director.
@1:01 Fusco’s face. Just a 3-second snippet, but his whole character’s in it. Only one of the many perfect things in this sequence. Everybody expressed so well without one word ever said.
This episode is probably the best episode of any series ever. The bookend EKG at the beginning and end, one for Reese and the other for simmmons. Fusco’s flashbacks about the devils share and how much Carter impacted his life. Both of the “dogs” breaking their leashes. Elias’ conversation about outliers. And of course, the opening. This opening scene is… incredible. From start to finish, this episode is perfect.
As a music video, this is quality. Even if you don't watch the show, this music video tells a story by itself in emotional, poetic fashion. It introduces everything important to the scene--the death of a beloved officer, the sadness and lost feeling in those who loved, respected, and/or admired her, the deep sorrow in the face of her comrade and fellow officer, the anger, the shameful lack of feeling shame in the murderer, the search for the murderer...and overall, the *Hurt*.
Truth to say, at first I usually sniff a bit, but at the end I always find myself crying like a baby. A true masterpiece of art. Probably the best adventure I've ever taken part in.
My favorite episode ever on Person of Interest. This show is awesome in action, story, and acting. I hope Caviezel gets more roles in movies now, like Escape Plan!
Absolutely perfect. I just fucking love that John doesn't give a flying fuck here about anything other than getting to Simmons, including even his own health. He is just 100% committed to finding Simmons, his own life be damned, if it means he can avenge Carters murder, the woman he loved and deeply respected. And this is the perfect song to showcase and convey his, and the whole teams grief, and the loss they all feel deeply. Idk if there is anything that could have even made this any better than it is. Absolutely love it. Such a great show.
The perfect scene to end Carter's story, and to show just how good the actors are. Finch letting show how truly sad he is, but not allowing himself to push it too much Shaw unable to show any emotion at the funeral, but quickly turning into a hunting machine fuelled by rage Reese's eyes of pure anger, while his face showing that his body is shutting down Carter's family in pure grief, too start the scene Fusco's always trying to look tough, but unable to hide how truly broken and sad he is, while the anger is vividly shown in his eyes. Amazing show

Still, in my opinion, the best serial TV episode opener ever.
Best opening in the whole history of openings. And I'm not just talking about TV openings, no. Just... of all the openings possible. Of any kind. Hurt by Cash is one of the strongest covers ever (I may like it better than the original, as a matter of fact), the timing of the editing is perfect, Shahi beating a punk with the bloody picture of the villain is awesome, and the grim look on Jim Caviezel still gives me chills. Earlier episodes and this one marked the time when POI entered the class A TV shows, with a vengeance.
After this cover was released, Trent Raznor (the original songwriter) said that it was no longer his song. So even the original songwriter thinks this is better than the original.
Rewatching the series. There's a lot that I missed from the last 2 seasons and didn't see much of season 5, but that's because I had to watch it when it was on cable. Finally going back to it and not missing an episode. Just watched this tonight and it's certainly one of the more powerful scenes I've ever watched and it's just the opening. The chiseled look on Reese's face as he walks away from a man left burning alive is honestly the craziest. But the person who I feel truly deserves the highest recognition for both this episode and the one prior is Fusco. That man is honestly one of the better actors out there and you physically feel the sheer emotion as he's pouring his heart into it later in this episode when he arrests Simmons.
The frustration in Reeses' eyes when he kills that guy makes you realize that he blames himself for Carter's death. I love this show!! A true masterpiece!
This song used here is so perfect. The execution of both the actors and the editing teams is just flawless. The song fits so perfectly, it expresses who John is and the loss he has had through his life, it portrays the loss and pain in the entire cast and there is not a single moment where you can just chock it up to acting. This show is a testament that good television still exsites. Just about this season itself the next 3 episodes are spaced over a decent amount of time in the show and John has lost site in there purpose.
God, this scene really cemented my love for this show. And this song, by the late, great Johnny Cash, fits it perfectly. I won't spoil anything, but so far in the final season, this song is basically the theme for the entire season.
FANTASTIC start to the episode. Using Cash's version of "Hurt" was a genius move. It really sets the mood for the episode. Caviezel looks like one MEAN SoB in the opening!
I somehow managed to hold back the tears when Carter actually died (probably because I was in shock) but I couldn't hold them back during this song. This show is amazing.
When she died and the only sound was the phone ringing while The Machine desperately tries to get a hold of Finch. No music, just the phone ringing....
This has to be the best opening sequence in TV history. From John's scene in his hospital bed to his vengeful disregard of the forgers, a whole gamut of emotions were on display. Then Johnny Cash's Hurt brings those emotions into raw focus. Truly epic!!!
We all have a Friend like Carter. Someone Who vehemently believes in us When We don't believe in Ourselves. Someone Who is intensely strong for Everyone, but Vulnerable within their heart and soul. When that Carter in our lives is taken away we are forever shattered.
The way Reese just walks away from the guy in the burning car speaks so many volumes to how Carter's death affected him. Saving lives is no longer his goal. Now he'll kill just to catch the killer. He didn't look guilty or remorseful or even distracted, just ice cold and focused
Matt Hallberg Terra Incognita, If-then-else, MIA, God Mode, The Crossing, Control-Alt-Delete, etc. have come extremely close to this. The closest is probably terra incognita.
this was an amazing opening. so far my second favourite scene (haven't finished the series completely yet!). the first is the ending scene of season 1 episode 21. always get chills.
It's one of the few times we see how truly dangerous Reese is. The coldness coming from him is chilling. It's no wonder he skips town in the next episode. The roller coaster of emotions he has to work through. He had left that life of killing behind only to turn back to it after Carter's death. Premeditated killing.
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt definitely fit the emotions of this intro. The hurt and shock on the faces of the people at the funeral. The rage on the faces of Shaw and Reese as they begin their revenge runs. The disbelief and pain on Finch's face as he observes the funeral. Obviously, no one expected Carter to be the first of the team to die.
My favorite episode is from season one where her number came up. John was so eager to stop her predators, he said we (him and Harold) began their work to help people in need, Carter had been doing that her whole life. Shes someone the world can't afford to lose.
@@adrv5721 Since I first watched Saw after this show was over, I always see Zep Hindle. But watching Saw I see Finch. Haven't seen him in much more. If anything.
Such a strong and emotional episode. The look in Reese's eyes. Fixing to bring down Hell-fire on Simmons. Not justice, this is pure pay-back. And pay-back is a motherf**ker!
Gave me chills and I almost cried. The song itself did it for me when it came out way back in the day, so added with the loss of Joss & Reese and Shaw's relentless search for Simms, it was an Awesome opening scene- no dialogue needed... Best show on TV now...
This episode was pure brilliance, and this opening was perfection, catapulting POI towards becoming one of the best shows of the decade, and of all time.
They started this episode with the heartbeat voice (of John) from metronome and ended with heartbeat stop (of Simmons) from metronome. POl was such a great show. They don't make such shows anymore.
This was hands down the best episode of the entire season, maybe of the last two seasons (though Season 2's final two episodes were pretty damn good). It really just seemed to be a culmination of everything awesome and insightful the show has built up within itself. John becoming the tornado-in-a-suit in earnest for the first time in what feels like forever, Root using that connection with the Machine to incredible effect (that whole series of it guiding gunshots in Season 2 was one of my favorite things), and Fusco's and Elias's bits, and... just everything. This was, quite possibly, the perfect episode.
I like it how Finch puts on the photo of Simmons on his wall after receiving the number. He knows Shaw and Reese are after him anyway but he is following his formulated process nonetheless.
Person of Interest (and Hannibal) proves that network TV can be just as good as cable TV, as long as the people working on it care about it to that extent and don't just treat it like another network show.

Amazing to see loss, sadness, anger, violence and vengeance put to music in four minutes. Bear's chin on Reese's bed is brilliant.
Regardless of how many times I see this opening, I still manage to sob like the first time. Brilliant writing, brilliant choice of music and brilliant show.
Watching Reese revert back to what must be his persona back during his CIA days gives me chills.
