Beach Path, Seascape Demo | Ile De Re, France

- A full demonstration of plein air painting in the sand dunes looking towards the sea & sail boats in Ile de Re, France. Lots of commentary on light and shadow, colours used, shapes & edges.... I decided to ware a pretty dress & floppy hat instead of my usual work gear, it felt nice to have the sand between my toes....also it was very hot and windy! I hope you enjoy it, we did - husband Nick filmed me on this one (he makes his first appearance :-)

Thank you Clare for this great video. Very informative and a joy to watch you paint and learn from your process. I only discovered your videos fairly recently so I'm catching up with them all! I'm in Wales and have started to paint en plein air in oils as acrylics dry way too fast. I got a great wet paint carrier and have done a few now. We have a "Durdle Door" type formation here om the Pembrokeshire coast called The Green Bridge of Wales and I was inspired to paint it after watching your Durdle Door video. Happily we had no flies! I have a "Mr. C" to help me too lol!

I really enjoyed watching you paint this lovely scene at the beach. The red boats really gave your painting the pop it needed. Thank you for explaining your colors as you add them to the little “piles” of paint. Your method of painting is so calm and stress-free. I can’t even imagine being where you are ….on the beach in France, but I guess a scene like this could be just about anywhere on a beach. The water is soooo blue, in contrast with the light blue of the sky. You have the colors just perfect. Thanks for letting us watch from over your shoulder.

I've just watched your video to get me through my exercise routine in the garage and as I grunted my way through my exercises I was simultaneously transported to Île de Ré! Like many of the other comments, I have to say I love those rich colours. And those shadows on the path...oh my word!

Question? Just keep looking at the scene , especially the sailboats….from where “we” are looking at their perspective to the sky….what about if they were painted taller? Closer to the sky? Just a thought….
Hi Sandra, thank you for your thoughts, it's always good to hear other peoples ideas! If I did the painting again I would try different compositions and possibly have less sky so the boats would be higher. I don't know about you but when I first paint a new scene I have to feel it out, and sometimes I want another go at it! Sending best wishes, Clare

Curious why you chose to start with the boats rather than quickly getting in those long beautiful shadows and deep shade of the grasses? I would think it would be easier adding in boats afterward than trying to achieve it once the sun was more overhead. Thanks!
Hi Terry, it’s because we saw the boats being rigged up ready to take out. So I started with them as they could all go early on in the painting! 😊

Do you ever use mediums?
Hi Skass, I just use Turpentine, I used to use mediums but find them sticky and actually don't need them for the way I paint at the moment. I use just a small dips into the turps in the beginning of the painting and then neat paint later on to make it thicker. Hope this helps! Best wishes, Clare
