BAND STAND: The Real Duppy Band

The most celebrated ritual occurs on the ninth night after death. It is believed that it takes nine nights for the spirit of a dead person to finally rest. The activities include worship through prayers, traditional dancing and most importantly, the music which for decades has included what is called, 'duppy bands'. Sherman Wright, one of the founding members of Night Vibes popularly called The Real Duppy Band says nine nights used to be an emotional occasion but with the musician aspect of it, it is all about getting into the spirit and celebration. It is another part of Jamaica's band culture and tradition that cannot be left out.
