Where the character was once one of the most prominent leads in the show during the 80's, the early to mid 90's saw him increasingly pushed way back in a somewhat minor role. By the time he was given a big comeback promotion in 1997, I'd actually forgotten who he was. It was a long stretch back to the days where things revolved around Barry Grant. Bringing back Barry Grant wasn't in itself a bad thing, but they basically wiped all other current stories off the table and just made the whole show suddenly revolve around Barry and his gangster shenanigans. What they failed to realise, was that many viewers in the late 90's just did not know his backstory. It was also the start of Brookside's cheap 'Gangsters, guns, and explosions' phase. Ultimately, it never recovered from it.
