I used to have a mine of nods like that here in the Ozarks, was either Jeff City or Moz....had white bands in it...heat treat 500° and the grey turned seashell pink. Came straight out of a red clay bank.
I could see Jason here^ 500 years ago sitting in a shaded house built of.....stone....several pretty Native women catering to his every need.....A sign out front says ..."Spalls-R-Us" or maybe "A Point above the Rest" and a long line of guys out front waiting to trade almost anything for the best tools and points in America!!
Now this Newman boy here is the best knapper I'm aware of. Have seen your work on fb groups. Your debitage flakes look like the best spalls I have been able to achieve myself
Damn nice looking work brother. I got a big rock of Obsidian for Christmas. Damn thing is giving me fits. Keep up the good work. Be safe watch your six Gene Gorringe Mi 💛 💙 🇺🇲
You truly have a gift, been at it 6 months and to get to your level , I can only wish. I’d love to pay for the shipping and for a few pounds of flakes and spalls of that Georgetown, myself I use to buy rock online but it got to expensive because all I did was turn 99% of it to gravel , so I started picking it up in the creeks and fields. Look forward to seeing you at a Knapp N one of these days. Thanks for what you do.
Im so frustrated. Bought three Georgia spalls.. They were really almost bifaces. I tried to thin one down with hammerstone and 1" copper bopper. Just couldn't get it thin enough to make arrowhead. Was about 5" longx4" wide and about 1-1/4" thick.
I've recently started to do some large percussion like you do, and I've ran into a bit of a repetitive problem. I am working obsidian and I'll end up with very hang fractured and crumbly platforms as I try to drive small flakes like you do. Any advice on avoiding those small flakes stacking instead of rounding a nice platform?
I'm really not sure when it comes to obsidian just what the platforms will hold up to. Use a finer abrader, and think of it more as polishing the platform rather than grinding. Make sure to set up where a ridge forms a backbone for the flake you wanna take and that there's no undulations or low spots that might fail in your flake path. Good luck!
Cortex: "get rid of that sh*t." Hilarious. It looks like you switched to a shorter, if not smaller, aluminum billet as the piece got thinner? Is the diameter the same? Can you give approximate dimensions and length? Also, is the striking surface of each billet the same, or does the shorter billet have a more convex surface, as opposed to a flatter surface on the longer billet?
The larger biller is 1.75"dia x 6 long. And the shorter one was 1.75dia x3 long. The surfaces are very slightly domed, with two sides ground away to leave a narrower striking surface
I look forward to many more videos of yours! I have a georgetown nodule just like that that I got from Curtis yesterday. Hopefully it’ll come out half as good as that beauty!
I've been lucky. I live in a pretty rock rich area, and have buddies I've traded out of stone. James aboud is who I got this Georgetown from, but I think he is currently out of material for the foreseeable future.
@@myBanjohasemgz do we have any idea how ancient peoples colleted the rocks? I know we have some verified places but were stones and red ochre something they ammased in hordes or was it something they got as needed
Lol that wasp incident reminded me of when this fly wouldn't stop bothering me so I hacked at it with the piece I was working and knocked it out of the air with the blade I was making haha
No sir, not currently. I have a deal with a guy to take my waste flakes. One of these days I may offer some of the more usable flakes and spells for sale on facebook
What a huge initial spall! Beautiful flint! Fine workmanship!

Well, thanks for again Jason for making me realize how bad I am at knapping
We all were at one time! Keep breaking rocks buddy!
While I was watching, I thought well fuck, I still suck lol?

You're really good at knapping! I have not seen tools like yours. It's probably because I am a newbie.
What a Master.....Thanks for doing these for us......I find it very relaxing.
Very nice Jason! I hate it when them dirty bastards hiding in the middle! Good show man!
Man that aluminum billet just grabs them platforms and peels them flakes off like no one's business! I tip my hat to your skill sir
Fantastic work!
My luck I'd start with something that size. And end up with a half inch tip and shredded fingers. Keep up the good work buddy.
I enjoy watching you work.
Thank you sir 🙏
Always such a gift to watch you knap.
Glad you enjoyed it!
With in the first 1min reminded me why I like your channel. Had me in tears haha
I've been a fan for years.why won't u give me a reply on where u get all ur material.😢
Doooodue that first big flake !! I want to learn !!
Crazy how good that turned out
Kudos to you, young man! You peeled flakes off that nodule like an onion!!!
Very good work
That’s impressive! I would love to have those flakes, even the ones on the ground!

I actually tried my first notch point yesterday on obsidian flake the other day. Lol long way to go
Great video, learned alot. Your good!!!!
Very nice flaking young man! At the 38:33 mark, you and I said “Hmm” about the same time. 😁
Tour skills arr insane man
Flakes coming off clean without any support... beautiful sight.
Yeah I don't think a lot of support is needed if the angles are set up correctly and the platform is weak enough
I watch all your videos as well your also a master
The technique is 🤯

Awesome as always!!!
Thank you sir!
Where do you source the amazing flint nodules you get to work?
Your a genius
Damn angrily curious wasps and hornets
Those pesky bastards! I'm not a fan lol
I would love to buy a pound of those Sharp thin flakes for my flint and steel fire kit???
great job.
Thank you
Hat do ypu suggest using to thin down bifaces and spalls that are 4"-6"x 1-1/4"
Did you make that bopper?
Did you film the indirect/finishing this piece?
Jason who do you buy your George town from and what kinda price would you have to pay for a LG flat rate box of George town?
How long you been chupping now?
Always a pleasure
Is this how you get the stone sword in Minecraft?
We need more videos.
Lmao wasp buzzing the wrong tree lol
I knew this channel was for me at 0:48
Do you sell spalls/decent sized flakes?
Michael Angelo of knapping

How Long have you been doing this? You make it look easy. And I now it's not.
Thanks! I've been at it for 16 years

What is the advantage of aluminum over copper? I’ve never used aluminum but would like to give it a shot.
Less edge grinding needed. Different flaking characteristics, and cheaper tool material
Where do you get your knapping rocks! You have so many it would make a cavemans head spin

Nice knapping, a little more vocals on angles and platforms would of been more educational for me,a pleasure to watch, thanks.
Yeah I'm pretty terrible at teaching. Most times I forget the camera is even rolling lol I'll try to do better
Lol that wasp incident reminded me of when this fly wouldn't stop bothering me so I hacked at it with the piece I was working and knocked it out of the air with the blade I was making haha
Lol that's funny! Good swing buddy!
What is the black cover that you are using on the piece of aluminum?
It's just heat shrink tubing
What kind of billet us that? Never saw the like.
It's 1.5" aluminum rod.
Sweet. Thanks dude. Rock on.
Is that a copper deadblow?
It's just a solid piece of copper with a piece of pipe that was split and welded back together around the copper, to allow it to spin.
jesus...thats one BIIIIG chunk
Do you sell or trade any material Jason?
No sir, not currently. I have a deal with a guy to take my waste flakes. One of these days I may offer some of the more usable flakes and spells for sale on facebook
.....Im about to use my finiah hammer
Man, it looks like you could surf on that thing!
Lol it has that look to it!
Debitage çok fazla. Ustasın.
I see a lot of pieces he is wasting by flinging them on the ground.
That looked like a dirt dobber
Was a red wasp, and I don't like em! Lol
I'll pay you $100.00 If you will allow me to come clean your floor. The only condition is that I get to keep half of what I clean up.
