Loomo Segway Robot Unboxing, Setup & Demo

- We unbox, setup and demonstrate Loomo the Segway Robot. It can transform from a Segway mini-pro like scooter you can ride around into a robot that responds to voice commands and gestures to follow your or take pictures.
Unboxing doesn't require any assembly, but watching this video and looking at the unboxing instructions will help you to get this contraption out of the box and balancing on its own 2 wheels in no time.
Setup requires installation of the app and creation of a Segway account. You will likely need to update the firmware before you can use it for the first time.

I think what I like best about your video is that it demonstrated that Loomo can go back to robot again from ride mode with the wake command. That I did not know. Well done. I have had my Loomo for a year now and watched just about all of the Loomo videos. No one has ever demonstrated that. And I did not know you could do that.

@@occupationoverkill Really anything! I've been considering getting one myself, so I would like to know how well it holds up to everyday use before I shell out $1800. One other thing I don't see often is people using the tele-operation feature, where you can control, speak, and emote through it remotely.
@@pluviamachina3583 OK, it sounds like I should put priority on the full review of Loomo in the pipe with good detail on the teleoperation feature (called "Avatar" in the app) since people keep asking about that.
@@occupationoverkill I've also heard rumors that the LOOMO likes apples, and will react if it sees one. Might want to try several different kinds of apples to test this myth. :3

I have Loomo! I made a video about it too, I'm about to make a one year+ follow up. I'm so excited every time I see someone else put up a video about Loomo, though I have yet to see another one in the wild!

Was thinking of getting one of these as well... how do you like it now that it's been over a year since you posted this great video? I have a Temi and really like the Alexa integration, but it's not rideable. Was thinking of using this for a security patrol with AWS Rekognition and DeepLens. Have they stopped development of any updates on the Loomo?
No updates as of yet. They left us stranded.
I have a Temi too. Soooo useless. They marketed it like it could do sooo much on its own but...no. mine is collecting dust..

Hello sir. I heard the loomo has a feature where it can record a video while circling you in dolly track mode or something. Can you confirm this?
I'm not the Creator of the Video but Yes it does have that Feature (Coming from a Person that knows someone that owns a Loomo)

The thing that would make me get this is if it had a dock like a roomba and a button on my phone to come to me and the ability to climb stairs even if without a person only

Depends on your intended use. If you need a secretary, get the LOOMO. If you just want to go fast, get any of the OneWheel models. Both are off-road capable, as far as I know.
I can confirm that loomo is somewhat off-road capable. I've tried it on sod grass, and firm sand. I would be a little concerned riding it on loose sand / gravel, or any surface that is too bumpy. Even uneven sidewalks feel a little dangerous to me up near Loomo's top speed (~10mph).

Thanks for the upload. Could it also be used a remote security system, access the camera via the mobile app?
Yes and no. There is a feature in the app called "avatar" that lets you drive the robot around using the robot's camera while your robot is connected to the same wifi network or directly to your phone. So, it is possible, for example to remote control your robot from another room or floor of your home. The app doesn't work through the cloud though so if you aren't at home on the same wifi network you will not be able to remote control it from far away. It might be possible to use a VPN connection to your home's wifi connection to enable this type of functionality. Perhaps this could be an experiment for a future video?
Segway Robotics released a video where a security company contracted them to use LOOMOs as sentries. No word on how successful it is/was.

Yes. There's a hardware extension bay that allows you to connect whatever you want to it. It's mostly a developer tool, but anyone with the skills & creativity can find use for it.

Well I was going to say at www.segwayrobotics.com, bottom of the page there is an order button, but that no longer allows you to order directly from Segway and instead now goes back to the old Indiegogo page. Worse still the developer forum seems to no longer work so I fear Loomo might be discontinued soon. There seems to be some on ebay, but be very careful buying things on there.
