it's funny how people's understanding of what "technique" and what classical voice is "supposed" to sound like interferes with how they actually LISTEN to music. Just because something follows a model doesn't mean it's the only thing that can be good, even if that model has been perpetuated for over 50, 70, 100 years. Battle's voice is outside of the traditional model of classical/technique obsessed singing. That doesn't mean her voice or singing lacks depth or understanding. Quite the contrary.
K. Battle is completely inside and schooled in a classical technique. The voice is just a bit small and very bubbly. She is a soubrette soprano and this is absolutely typical. However, she does like to be labeled a "lyric soprano" of which she is not as that is a completely different tone. It was and still is a gorgeous harp like soprano.
@@camillegreffe110 fantastic observations I gotta tell you though- she came to Denver this last year before covid and her voice is sounding ROUGH so I don’t know if she would qualify as singing into her 60s
Berlioz was called bombastic, empty and vulgar in his day ..if this is all I knew him for I would think those people mad,for this is the exact opposite of those short pithy remarks
The conducting and Orchestra is well articulated without being too plucky or too heavy. This version is legato where it has to be and fast paced where it is supposed to be which is a good thing and the cadenza is not dragged out as so many do nowadays. The French diction is mush but the flow and tone and phrasing and coloratura are all exquisitely done. This still remains a very difficult aria to do becasue it alternates ethereal legato singing with meaty mid ranged declarations, furthermore a high tessitura melody refrain. So we often hear coloratura's, pushy leggieros and chirpy soubrettes all taking a chance with it. Rarely do we hear it uniformed. I think Cortrubas is the best mix of the character Hero and the compositions goal of this aria... followed by Battle at the soubrette end and Eda-Pierre at the full lyric coloratura end.
100% agree re: Cortrubas being the very best at singing this. Her pronunciation is also amazing, which is exceptional for a non French-speaking singer in an aria as...intricate...as this one.
laure rouls - Just as you are capable of incorrect word usage by using the word "expect" instead of the word 'except', Kathleen Battle can be forgiven for not perfectly speaking a language that is other than her own.
A truly gifted voice. What a wonderful perforamnce.
Whats up here?
Shes the best every time. Her lyrical special voice is absolut famous!!!!

Our Dearest & Most Precious Kathleen Battle
You Are A Special Gift To Us All!
brava diva!

His music is often lush and heavenly! I should listen to more of it.
Beautiful. The best version of this aria! But my goodness, the picture. Do they have to expose the long neck of an opera singer...
she looks beautiful

That's very well sung, indeed, but i can't understand a single word expect "rayonne" and "je vais le voir" .That's a pity.....

Yes, pity you should have such profound hearing loss at your age ... perhaps you should consult a specialist, dearie
@@Marcel_Audubonвообще, достаточно прочитать либретто, хотя бы раз, чтоб понимать каждое слово в арии. Маленький секрет😊
