Boomstick took all of my earth puns. What a terrable person...I'll give the Gaia pass this time. Anyway, Gaara VS Toph, everybody! They both had a rocky start, but now that they're facing off, who will be the one to bite the dust? Who will be the last one sanding?

There are a lot of problems in this death battle.
How the hell can toph sneak up to gaara from behind and grab him what if that was his sand clone? Plus you have to be extremely fast to catch him but by ScrewAttacks logic they let her catch him? she's far slow compared to rock lee and sasuke . Gaara never lets his foes get close to him and how can she break through gaara's absolute defense by using his own sand spike?. How can her arm come out of gaaras sand grab when it has high pressure? She shouldn't be able to move! she has to move in order to earth/sand/metal/mudbend. They didn't let gaara use his sand clone, sand eye, sand shower, sand spear and they also didnt let gaara put sand in tophs bloodstream while the sand was hitting her and he could control her
Why did they let toph use her metal whip? She only used that when she was in her 20s! She never had that when she was 12 and they used 12 year old toph. If she can use her metal whip why can't gaara have Shukaku (One Tailed Beast) since they used kazekage gaara when he didn't have the beast inside him but yet they let toph have the metal whip when she didn't have it when she was 12. One of gaaras powerful attacks would one shot kill her because she's fragile and has a regular human body. Gaaras stamina wouldn't run out quick he has very high stamina and it can last forever. During the shiniobi war his chakra never went low. Gaara wasn't flying he just levitated -_- They made gaara look like a retarded weakling in that fake fight.
How the hell can toph survive a sand coffin. Sand coffin can easily crush steal. kimimaros bones are harder than tempered steel he was caught in a sand coffin he made a layer of steel around him under his skin and admitted that if he didn't add a layer he would've been crushed. In naruto shippuden he had the potential to crush mecha naruto (crazy robot version of naruto) and he's made out of STEAL! Gaara can control the amount of pressure.
If wiz and boomstick were smart enough and let gaara use all his abilities and Shukaku. He would've won without a doubt. Do i hate toph? Hell no! she's seems like an awesome, cool character. but if you put her against gaara she would get destroyed I have seen all her fights and yes I know she advantages over gaara but so does gaara too. He has more advantages.
You know ScrewAttack are never 100% accurate. It's a broad opinion. Any good writer could come up with any kind of senererio. So yeah.
Meso Sacred He was low on charkra at that point when he used all of his power on toph but even that couldn't kill toph
in last airbender bumi used earthbending only using hes mind in korra it that technic more popular and toph can feel heartbeats so clones is an visual illusion but toph is blind and can feel him
And shese supder fast because she can feel things coming before it happend only by the movement of the enemy and shes a has mastered the praying mantis fight style because she using it for earthbendig so martial arts and her speed is Overpowerd
she is'nt fast physically but mentally she is able to see things comming cause of her seismic radar thingy i dont exactly know the name of it but that does'nt translate to physical speed while gaara can traval at im pretty sure super sonic speeds let me give you a anology you maybe good enough to deflect a bullet at long range since you see it comming but at close range if your not physically fast enough you cant do crap.... she might be able to bend without using movement but i think most major bending would be through movement and lastly the thing of toph being able to control gaara's sand is quite bs if she can do that gaara should be able to control toph's ammo as well screwattack have a certain bias against anime characters its quite dumb

Oh God. Those puns! Even worse, the ones in your description are actually really good.
I can't really get behind this battle's results, mainly because of 4 things. 1. Toph's metal rope thing wasn't explained or shown in the analysis, and it played a pivotal role in her winning this bout. 2. Gaara's Sand Clone/Substitution was shown and got a line item mention, but he didn't use it in the fight. 3. Naruto characters have an inate ability to come up with brilliant strategies while they're fighting. They even mentioned how Gaara was a tactical wartime general, and none of that was shown in the fight. 4. Them deciding Toph's willpower is stronger than Gaara's mother's will, which is in every grain of sand in the gourd.
Now, when they announced the fight, I was sure that Gaara would win, even without Shukaku. I even took it upon myself to find a way for Toph to win, and I did find one. I would gladly accept the loss of Gaara if the above things were rectified, but as of right now, I felt Gaara was not on display here as well as he should have been. Also his voice actor was cringeworthy.
The fight is just a cool and fun way of showing who they think would win. They aren't saying this is exactly how it would go down and this is exactly how Toph would beat him. Don't take what happens in the battles with a grain of salt.
The metal whip is from the sequel series. Toph's daughters as well as the metal bending police force use them. I'm not defending them not mentioning it (since they probably should've) just explaining where it came from.
I didn't like the voice actor either. It was a guy they already had from Team Four Star
Well the animation was just for show to be honest. Only the research and results count.
Since Toph can sense earth ANYWHERE, using sand clones/substitution would be pointless as Toph would immediately realize they're fake. Also, Gaara's Sand Armor allowed Toph to keep track of him wherever he went.
Gaara does come up with strategies, by encasing himself in a shell of near-impenetrable sand and using the Third Eye to evaluate the scenario. Unfortunately, that takes time that Toph wouldn't allow him, plus she can analyze opponents faster than Gaara can ever do.
Gaara's mother's will is only infused in the gourd sand, not the sand around them, and definitely not the self-created Sand Armor. Also, as Wiz said, it's still sand, and therefore, bendable.
That thing about losing Shukaku, not entirely true lately on Gaara and Shukaku reunite, and this time Gaara isn't possessed by the beast but they can co-operate. Also Gaara can use sealing jutsus, which I think might have helped. Also, Gaara making his sand lighter then air might have made it impossible for Toph to detect. If they had that into a account sure victory for Gaara.

And while those are some good points for gaara, the weight of the sand doesnt really change whether she can detect it or not. Its still earth.
Maybe so, I am just saying that I prefer Gaara rather then Toph and think that his skills should be able to deal with Toph's.
Nikos Spiris I can see that. I still think toph has a HUGE advantage in that she doesn't need a resource to bend her element whereas Gara requires Chakra to do it.
Also keep in mind that if we were to use Gara at the end of the series then they could use toph from korra, assuming age didn't weaken her instead.
The Marvel character Quicksilver once said:
"I am the fastest man on Earth. It matters not whether you can read my mind, or predict my next move. You'll be down before you can even think of blocking."
And this is exactly why Gaara easily wins. It doesn't matter if Toph can sense Gaara's sand, because she isn't nearly fast enough to react. Case closed.
It's actually embarrassing Screw Attack had Toph winning.

I agree with you about Toph's voice actor. Although she is amazingly talented, she didn't sound much like Toph.
However, go listen to what Gaara sounded like in the English dub version of the show. The Gaara voice actor sounds almost identical (to me). And I'm extremely picky about voice acting.
Does he? Granted--and I hadn't actually thought about this when I was watching the episode--I watched Naruto with English subtitles, not dubbing, so that would make sense.
It's much better in Japanese. But yeah, he does sound pretty similar.

Every one on death battle videos are like "they made no research" and is skipping the reason why the person who won won. But if their favorite character dies they will rage because of that.
You must be honored because you drew Toph vs Gaara and Death Battle did this without you asking.
I am a fan of death battle and have agreed and respected every decision and winner of battles. In this one, a little thing is bugging me and this is the best place to ask my question since it's more civil and respectful than in other places. My question is how is Toph keeping up with Gaara's speed? That is the one thing I do not understand but if it's answered I will be alright with the result of this battle.
One of the things I always think about when people talk about each fighters sensing and precision, I think of some small instances
During Gaara's fight with Deidara, Gaara did not notice Deidara's explosive clay creations burrowing through his Absolute Defense until they finally broke through and exploded in his face. It could be argued that because he was focused on fighting Diedara that he just wasn't paying attention to his sand.
Meanwhile Toph has sensed a massive machine tracking her group when it was still far enough away to not even be heard or seen by anyone else and also sensed the cries for help of people trapped deep underground by Hama. In each of these situations, Toph was not even trying to specifically sense these things and simply picked them up passively and I am fairly sure she was even trying to sleep in one of these situations.

She has also been captured by Dai Li agents using their stone hands.
She might be fantastic at ground sensing, but she is obviously crap at sensing things in air.
Hmm, which episode is your second sentence in reference to? I don't doubt it occurred, I am mostly just curious and at the moment sort of burned out, so unlikely to look through a half dozen episodes myself.
More onto the subject matter, you are correct, her sensing is primarily based off her tremorsense with her earth sense being more secondary. It's the same reason she can't swim and nearly drowns when they travel through the Serpent's Pass. Even if she could swim, she would have no way at all to know where she is going beyond trying to follow the sound of someone's voice.
Regarding the Dai Li, I recall three specific instances of them grabbing her with the stone hands: the Earth King's party, the fight under Lake Laogai, and the assault on the Earth King's palace. In the first and third instance, these were situations where actively combating the attacks would have been troublesome (during a social function where they are intending to keep a low profile and during a diplomatic disarming at the request of the Earth King). In the fight at Lake Laogai, she is caught for about a grand total of two second in a grand melee between dozens of Dai Li and the Avatar and allies.
That actually reminds me of one of the other thoughts on how Gaara and Toph differ. Gaara is actually more suited for combat against multiple opponents where as Toph seems to be better and solo combat. This occurs to me because Gaara often seems to rely on battlefield control as well as panicking his enemies by making the very terrain their enemy. Toph on the other hand as mentioned seems to work better against a single very strong opponent while he performance suffers some when dealing with multiple opponents for significant amounts of time.
This aspect of Toph could be seen in the fight against the Earth Rumble roster where she forced dust into the air to make an obscuring cloud which forced the group of fighters to tackle her two or three at a time at best. This also calls into though her overall earth sense since she had to be able to sense the earth was in the air to make sure her smokescreen was working.
Anyway, I'm taking way too long, apologies. Thank you for your points and the time you spent writing them up. if you'd like to discuss things further, feel free. It's been awhile since I visited this thread and it was kind of neat to come back.

I feel like saying it's a social function is a cop out. The whole point of being in disguise is to not get detected. If stone hands are flying your way then you've been found out and you would do something about it if you could at that point.
As for the Lake Laogai fight, the only reason it was "grand total" of two seconds was because Jet saved her. I think the fight against the Dai Li is something that should be heavily considered when facing Gaara. If she can't escape multiple Dai Li how is she expected to escape multiple streams of sand coming her way from all different directions? That's how Gaara typically fights and he is far faster than the Dai Li are. Gaaras sand is proven to be hypersonic in speed. The Dai Li are fast, but definitely nowhere near hypersonic and yet they still caught Toph.

Alex Laboy Ah, sorry to hear about the difficulty with the responses. Goodness knows the system sometimes mucks things up. I hope it wasn't too much of a pain to generate the response again and thank you for going through the trouble.
Admittedly, yes, the explanations I provided on her problems against the Dai Li aren't without their flaws and they rely on a couple of assumptions in most points. The best counter I can provide regarding the social function, recall that Toph and Katara are not even supposed to be there in the first place. Them actively resisting someone escorting them out when they are in fact sort of crashing the function feels like the sort of thing that could escalate. I just get the image that if you maybe sunk into a party where your favorite celebrity was hosting to try and get an autograph, getting into a brawl with the security when they pull you aside to talk to you is liable to turn getting ejected from the party into getting locked in a cell.
As for the Lake Laaogi fight, this again might be going off us some assumptions. Somewhere buried in this page I think may be a post where I made the assertion that fighting a single Earth Bender who can move a dozen tones of Earth in various directions would be easier for Toph to fight then one dozen Earth benders who can only move one tone of earth in a single direction. My reasoning for this is that although the movements are more complex, it is still a single foe and as such Toph can focus all of her attention on every movement they make, while in the latter, she would need to split her attention twelve direct ways and as such reduce her reaction speed overall. With that said, I'm not familiar enough with Gaara to say how much motion he needs to put into his attacks.

I cant decide whether to disagree, or agree here.
Just by the way, for everyone's information, it is very much possible for benders to bend elements without moving their arms or legs. Heck, King Boomey was completely trapped in a metal cage except for his face and was easily able to bend an enormous amount of earth to free himself and then single handily take back his enemy controlled kingdom and Toph is a better bender than he was. She can also do anything she wants to sand/metal/mud/earth in the air, underwater, in a volcano, even in space if she was somehow able to survive there. Hardening, shifting, nudging, dissipating, or just throwing any earth material flying towards is by no means impossible. Throwing trees, shurikens, kunai, or whatever at her doesn't present much of an opening either. She can easily deflect with any earth material around her in an instant. Not to mention shurikens and other throwing weapons usually have metal and/or earth in them. Making them extremely visible and bendable to Toph.
Plus benders have been shown to react incredibly fast. Not to mention, when you barely turn a steering wheel going at incredibly fast speeds you drastically change your trajectory. Even with the tiniest adjustment of Gaara's sand, Toph can deflect and redirect his fastest attacks. I will say, that is rather unfair to compare Naruto speed with Avatar speed seeing as they have very different measures of speed and physics. That's like pitting Super Saiyan God Goku versus any Naruto character. Goku would without a doubt be faster not because he's better but simply because his reality's physics are completely different. Toph is also known to be able to instantly put on earth(or even metal if available) armor to block attacks which she can harden to incredible densities at will.
Toph, by her very nature can react to Gaara's attacks before he even makes them as she can sense his sand even as it just BEGINS to shift and all of Gaara's movements before he makes them. His sand armor is like a beacon to Toph so any movement what-so-ever e.g. blinking, slight tensing of muscles, which direction he's looking. I mean, she's a human lie detector and she doesn't even have to be near you to tell. The instant Gaara's starts to use a fast sand attack she would need to just nudge it with her nose and push it off target. In effect, she can react to his attacks before he even attacks.
Regardless of what is in Gaara's sand it still contains... wait for it.... SAND not to mention the gold dust. Meaning she can bend it. IF SHE CAN BEND THE MINUSCULE TRACES OF UNREFINED EARTH PARTICLES IN BASICALLY ANY METAL, EVEN METEORITES, SHE CAN BEND GAARA'S SAND REGARDLESS OF WHAT'S IN IT. Why? Because it's sand and Toph is a very proficient sand bender. And simply because there is life force in sand does not mean she can't bend it. I mean, even in the world of Avatar PEOPLE CAN BEND THE BLOOD IN A PERSON'S BODY AND THEN FORCIBLY CONTROL THEM!! And Toph and other earth benders can LITERALLY BEND THE METALS OUT OF A PERSON'S BODY. People have souls by the way, if we're going by the earlier arguments against her bending. Just because Gaara and his mother's chakra are in the sand does not make it immune to Toph's bending.
So if you make any future arguments to completely discounts Toph's abilities please take into account all the things she can ACTUALLY do. This isn't a comprehensive list of her skills and abilities but simply several selected ones that disprove people's thought of completely discounting Toph.
While I do believe this battle could have gone both ways, honestly I'd be satisfied regardless as long they gave a convincing argument why one would win over the other. As such, I am rather satisfied with this result. Please, in this case, and in life in general, don't be so quick to judge, discredit, or minimize people, organizations, or ideas. Life would be much simpler for everyone if we adopted a better mindset.

In the analysis they said Gaara's sand moves at supersonic speeds. So how was Toph able to react to supersonic speeds. Yes I know she can see it coming, but being able see something coming and reacting to it are completely different things. I'm an avatar fan and I have never seen Toph move that fast or very fast at all. Also when she was being constricted by the sand how was she able to move? Wouldn't the added force of having metal make the constriction worse on her body?
Well, I think if Toph can sense the earth/sand/mud she can prevent tha happening dont? Or i'm just drunk?
She has been shown to be able to react fast enough(through seismic sense) to block a lightning bolt from azula.

SANDWICHshuriken Yes, but Azula needed to get into a stance which gave Toph time. Gaara's sand is instantaneous but I'll admit she' got some speed on her. So how was she able to survive a sand burial and a desert coffin if she couldn't move? Gaara's sand is strong to break METAL. There is no way she could have bended her way out especially when she couldn't even move. Also Toph is HUMAN. She shouldn't have survived having metal, sand and gold mashing against her body. How much force was Gaara using?
I didn't say Gaara wasn't human. I'm just wondering how the hell she broke out of that sand when her body was being squeezed. Can you show me where or tell me how she was able to break out of that sand when she couldn't move? I'm still having a hard time believing that the metal would stop the sand from crushing her. I was upset when Gaara lost, but Screw Attack made sense when they said that Toph can still feel that earth, even if it is not connected to the ground

Because I can waste immense amounts of time going over each and every little thing, let's take this one point at a time.
We'll start with the gold dust.
Gaara _doesn't_ use any.
He used the available materials in the battlefield once to make a very specific trap. There is no indication that Gaara took any gold dust with him.
Especially since the gold dust is an anti-sand/Shukaku weapon. The gold dust's actually purpose was to make the sand move slower. Gaara would be an idiot if he took any with him.

Yes, I do like Gaara, but Toph has a lot more arsenal in her defense then Gaara. It's ironic that Toph is blind because her sense is literally at the same caliber as the Hyuga Clan. She can sense enemies from every angle. Furthermore she is a master Earth, Metal, & Sand Bender. Gaara has been incapacitated by Earth style users in the past i.e. Deidara, which means that he's vulnerable not only against Lighting style, but Earth based attacks as well. He would have been killed against Kimimaro if not for the latter succumbing to his disease. If he still had Shukaku, then it would give him that added Chakra reserve, which would probably tilt the battle to his favor, but he doesn't.
Caleb of the Whites Here's a second point that Screw Attack touched upon. To take advantage, all Toph has to do is make it a prolonged battle with Gaara . Gaara's fighting style is to finish up his victims very fast. You see what happened with Kimimaro when the battle extended longer then what Gaara had initially hoped for. If Gaara ran out of chakra during a battle with Toph, then he has no taijutsu or genjutsu abilities to fall back on, he'd be an easy target for her since the Avatar Universe does not have to worry about things like chakra reserves.

From what I hear of who watches the show she can destroy big buildings. Well, Gaara flooded a forest with a 12-year-old sand tsunami, and then crushed that sandbar where the enemy was. But of course, you may know this.

i love both series and both characters but i think its extremely BS that gaara lost
gaara seemed extremely nerfed and out of character
with the opposite of toph seeming buffed
1 critical fact that DB forgot/ignored is the substitution jutsu, ''Toph can sense where gaara is because of his sand armour '' this could be countered 2 ways:
1: gaara realised she was blind and couldve realised she uses earth too see and he couldve ditched the sand armour
2: Gaara can make sand clones of himself if he made like 200 sand clones spread around the area toph would be confused as shit
Sidenote: Gaara stopped using his sand armour before the great ninja war, so he may not even have used it at all

I thought the animation was pretty much just dialogue and not that much fighting
I'm so very happy with this death battle. Long live Toph Beifong. If she stalemated the most experienced Earthbender in the world, at age 12, and held an entire mountain and iron mine on her back, I don't think Gaara stood much of a chance.
However, I've been debating the issue with others since the battle came out. If you disagree, let's debate. Keep it civil, and don't use Ad Hominem, and we'll have fun.

Chad Small Im 10 and debate that gaara has shown that his sand can spring up at the speed of sound rock lee had 5 gates opened but still couldn't win and gaara has not used many of his abilities id like to see your analysus (and sorry for the spelling) and all other people as he said keep it civil if you want to join the debate.
I could tell that the rock sprites that they used for the rocks Toph were throwing at Gaara, were from Sonic Battle.
I will completely admit the analysis of these two are a bit unclear and that they've taken some weird creative liberties with this fight to seem like they put most of it in Toph's favor (like giving young Toph the metal rope dart for some reason but leaving out the rope dart Gaara has, despite the fact that they listed it in his arsenal). They also brought up abilities like Gaara's decoys and his ability to control people by putting sand in their bloodstream and then never utilized said abilities in the fight, while Toph took the metal from her rope dart to create a casing which would help her survive the sandcoffin even though that is something she has NEVER BEEN SHOWN to be capable of doing. However, all things considered, I DO think Toph could pull off a victory. Here's why.
The Seismic sense really does give her an overall advantage . . . sort of like Spider-mans Spidey Sense when he fought Batman. It directly counters elements like Stealth (something Gaara often resorts to being trained as a Shinobi). His decoy ability would not help him because Toph can detect heartbeats. This is how she knows when people are lying. Now you may be thinking that since Gaara can float he can just avoid the seismic sense altogether. Disregarding the explanation given in the video (because I will be the first to admit it's pretty stupid) just because something doesn't directly interact with the ground doesn't mean Toph won't be able to detect it. It still gives off a sound. Haven't you ever wondered how Toph is capable of shielding against incoming projectiles despite the fact that they are travelling through the air? Like when that wrestler guy was swinging through the air on a rope to try and attack Toph in her first appearance? He was giving off a battlecry while doing so (big mistake on his part) which allowed Toph to know where he's coming from. And I imagine the shifting of sand can be PRETTY loud. As for the sand entering bloodstream thing . . . Toph has as much control over sand as Gaara does so it's likely she can stop that from happening. Many argue that because of Gaara's mothers influence over the sand it should be the exception of the rule. But I'm legitimately asking here: is the mom-sand just natural sand with his moms influence over it? Or was it some sort of spiritual sand that was created at the time of his mothers death? if it's the latter, I'll accept that argument. If not, then it's reasonable to say that Toph will have influence over it.
Now, the way Toph survived the sand coffin in this fight IS pretty stupid. Buuuut I think she could do it with the fact that she, again, also has influence over sand. The sand Coffin IS a ton of pressure to withstand . . .but Toph has withstood a ton of pressure when she was stopping that library from sinking into the ground. And yes, Gaara can move his sand at supersonic speeds, but Toph has been fast and agile enough to stand up to TWO different avatars, one being a super quick Airbender by birth and the other she could fight while being an old lady! Plus, she can detect something occuring right as it is happening, meaning she can influence it is just enough to avoid hitting her.

Gaara actually doesn't use a rope dart. It's the weapon his student uses.
What Toph had was the metal wire from the Metalbending Police she creates in Legend if Korra. They made that unclear.
*Seismic Sense*
Toph has a unique and powerful battle style that allows her to see bender's moves before they start. Only one problem, Gaara isn't a bender.
The seismic sense allows Toph to detect movements used for bending and determine what the bending will be, but because Gaara doesn't bend (often doesn't move at all) when he directs his sand. So the seismic sense now is reduced to being only useful for detecting Gaara (and underground sand grinding up rock), and even that is negated by Gaara's flying.
Also, if Gaara is flying she can't use her heartbeat sensing to check for decoys.
*"Earth Sense"*
It is rather stupid that no one seemed to know it existed unless they had seen the specials, but it does seem to exist.
I did some digging since DB decided that the single sentence a special gave was enough to grant Toph omniscience over all things earth.
I found an occasion where she would have to have depended upon it exclusively.
Book 3 episode 1: Toph shoots down launched enemy projectiles from a boat.
A feat that puts the earth sense about as good as eyesight.
But the Dai Lee have tagged Toph twice from behind, so the earth sense is also directional.
The earth sense is partially just normal eyesight that only sees earth. A complete negation of the disadvantage of being blind, but not an advantage over Gaara.
*Sand in Bloodstream*
Regrettably, Gaara hasn't performed this technique alone. Shukaku was the one who provided the wind blast for forcing in enough sand to be useful.
*Mother's Spirit*
I'm fairly certain it's normal sand that the spirit exerts force on.
The reason people don't think Toph could bend it (the smart ones anyways) is became the gourd sand is infused with Gaara's chakra (way easier for him to move) and is also empowered by the spirit.
Basically, it's already primed to multiply the force Gaara can exert with it against Toph and Gaara's mother's spirit is adding to that force with all the power she can.
*Sand Burial*
You know that what they gave us was stupid. Excellent.
Against the normal sand burial, Toph is almost assured an escape (provide he performs the sand coffin first. If he was targeting an arm or leg for a quick crippling blow then Toph would be finished).
The real problem comes from what his next move would be.
Giant Sand Burial. Large enough to cause a magnitude 6 earthquake. This would spell the end for Toph.
Even if Toph was capable of resisting the crushing pressure initially (she would need have created a small pocket do she has maximum mobility for bending power), there are three ways to ensure she doesn't get out alive.
The first and simplest way would be to use his sealing tags to lock Toph in.
The second way would have Toph sent to a depth she can't dig her way out. Young Gaara was capable of using a massive amount of chakra to plunge Kimimaro 200 metres underground. Think about how deep that is. In the third part of canon comic, "The Rift," 15 year old Toph's weight limit is clearly demonstrated when she hold up a mine shaft a few meters deep. Toph was completely immobilized while holding that up. Once Gaara sends her to a certain depth, there would be no way out.
The third way is another simple one. Asphyxiation. Toph might be able to initially withstand the Giant Sand Burial while she has fresh air in her lungs, but what about after a few minutes? She would gradually weaken until Gaara can successfully crush her.
*Library*
This feat (just like Gaara's meteor feat) has too many problems with it.
Gravity wasn't the one pulling, a spirit was.
There wasn't a giant pit where the library once was.
Library's composition is unknown.
We don't know how much she was affecting.
Toph never displayed that level of power before or afterwords.
Later evidence shows Toph having a significantly weaker limit.
Etc.
I think that the only explanation that makes sense is that most of the library was already in the spirit world. I think what happened was that Toph was simply clutching what was still remaining in the real world.
*Extra Bits*
The second avatar had mercury in her blood. She was incredibly weak at the time.
Gaara attack with his sand like you would with a gun. Even if Toph distorted the flight path of his sand, Gaara would correct it instantly. He is directly controlling his sand sand its flight path the entire time.

Well, I don't think you give Toph's seismic sense NEARLY enough credit. I mean, she can detect something as small as ants travelling across the ground. And, once again, she can also detect heartbeats. Gaara's movement may be minimal at best, but he still has a heartbeat and neither he nor his sand needs to be a quote unquote "bender" in order to be detected by the seismic sense. And I know I said earlier that I agree that the idea of her being able to detect earth in the air is bullcrap, but once again I refer to the fact that she can detect incoming projectiles enough to create barriers and shields before they hit her. As seen in scenes where she and the rest of the Gaang tear through Ba Sing Se to talk to the Earth King.
*Mother's Spirit*
In your argument, you stated that the gourd sand is infused with Gaara's Chakra. But in the battle it is stated that using the sand as armor proves to be a great strain on his Chakra in order to do so. That said, it would seem to be that his Chakra can be exhausted. How strenuous is it for him to do things like keep afloat in the air? has there ever been a specified time for how long he can stay up there, or has it never been questioned due to elements like cinematic time? How strenuous is it for him to pull off feats that have little to no influence from his mother? Granted, maybe he's skilled enough to make sure that never happens (I wouldn't know enough about Naruto to make that distinction) but a core difference between that and bending is that Toph is able to bend massive hunks of earth at a time without putting strain on herself, physical OR spiritual. The most strenuous feat she's ever pulled is holding up that collapsing mine shaft, but that's an understandably large feat all things considered. Also, what about when Gaara creates MORE sand? is the extra sand made given just as much influence from his Chakra/mother as the sand he initially has in his gourd? Or is it just extra sand and nothing more given that it was created OUTSIDE of the gourd?
Finally, you stated in your argument that a magnitude 6 earthquake would spell the end of Toph. I wouldn't know about that, either . . .I mean she HAS fought King Bumi to a standstill, and that guy could level all of Omashu (which is essentially just a massive mountain).

I don't get one thing:
How could toph win if the sand moves faster than the eye can see and moves more or around the speed of sound.
Tophs seismic sense moves at the speed of sound.
Once she feels a movement the and would already be at her face and she can't move at the speed of sound to dodge it let alone process the attack fast enough...I'm not going for any of them but it doesn't make sense how she won. Gaara should have won.
It helps that she is blind and relies on her earth bending and seismic sense to see and predict her opponents moves. Speed Sound? If i remember right she has been shown to be able to block azulas lightning bolt before.

Toph can sense vibrations and the earth around her gaaras sand shifts whil its in the air and shifting is technically vibration. So i guess thats how hes flying
I like how they said that Toph could "bend" Gaara because of his sand armor, as though he couldn't remove it. Also, as they said, Garra could put sand inside Toph and manipulate her. for some reason, they excluded Gaara's tactical abilities and Sand-Clones. They also didn't really compare stats, they really just compared the concepts of their abilities. There is just so many questions I have that are unanswered. I'm sorry, but Gaara can manipulate way more weight at a much higher speed, and there is no way Toph could get out of Sand Coffin with metal bending. Metal and sand with grains of metal in it aren't the same thing. And it is not like she could beat him physically, if Rock Lee couldn't. If anybody has a counter-argument, please tell me it. I'd rather be wrong than confused about how they got that outcome. (Also, I'm not trying to hate on Avatar or anything. I know I probably shouldn't even care about this as much as I do... it simply seems that they put more thought to this but just weren't clear about it in the video)

The definitive point for Toph is Weakness. Gaara can manipulate a lot of weight but is slow down by Chakra, while there's no limits for Bending; Bumi can re-build a city just with his nose, Toph is stronger than Bumi.
Gaara can be strong physically, but Toph bending abilities can enchange her strenght against Earth Bending Things, just like when she LITERALLY Punches metal with her bare fists, destroys it and don't feel any pain.
Metal and Sand with Grains of Metal are not the same thing, true. But if she can Bend Sand AND Bend Metal, it's not impossible, considering, she can extract liquid metal from inside another persons body
So Yes, Gaara could not win without transform into a giant Tanuki OR dismiss ALL his Sand,

Carlos Bacchin You make some really good points, that is true. But didn't Katara bloodbend Hama, another bloodbender? Plus you didn't acknowledge that Gaara can remove his armor, and he doesn't constanly have it on either. It is a last resort reserved for those who can break his absolute defense. Also, Gaara's sand is supposed to be as fast as lightning. (ridiculous, yes, but canon) Gaara has a LOT more Chakra than he does in this battle, to the point where I think they were going to use young Gaara but changed their mind halfway through. Now that I think about it, Toph probably could tell if he was a sand clone or not. Plus the substitution jutsu happens instantly, so she wouldn't see it coming. One thing I think we can agree on is that there is much more to this fight than the Death Battle makes there out to be.
That was one of the most brutal deaths in this series! Just the thought of it gives me chills... Im glad they made this because i liked both characters and didnt mind who won :D

Gaara can crush stuff harder than steel at a very fast rate. Toph can't keep up the pace to protect herself even with sand bending. Not to mention in avatar bending living things is hard. Blood is water but there are so few blood benders. Bending spirit is even harder. Korra had to go into the avatar state to bend the spirit vines. The mother sand is gaara's dead mom. Toph can't energy bend.

The Hitman versus (one of) The Assassins: A battle of the stealthy and creative killers. Who would win if it were Ezio? Altair? Connor? Would the bald barcode man be able to kill them all?
Love both characters....but on the speed factor alone Toph stood no chance... Even in the analysis they said it takes moving faster than the speed of sound to even touch Gaara. Toph has NEVER displayed anywhere close to that level of agility. Power wise. Tophs metal bending would not have been strong enough to protect her from Gaaras attacks..In Avatar there have been many showings that despite their abilities. .The characters are VERY human. There's no way in hell she'd be able to withstand anything a Naruto character could dish out. Love Toph to death...lol puns... but she should not have won this fight
i would love to know, what do you think gaara would have done if she started bending the sand armor directly like she does in the fight? or takes that special mama sand away from him? there seem to be too many counters toph has for gaaras abilities, but i would love to hear what you have to say in response
@gabriel gonzalez you're looking at toph at an early point in her career. shes progressed since then. saying toph cant win cus she couldnt hold up that building longt is like saying gaara couldnt win cus he couldnt find out how to go against rock lee when he busted through his defenses. her full potential goes FAR beyond that episode! also PS. that building was a library shown throughout the episode to be absolutely enormous, to the point where some described it as endless, and as most of it was underground it's difficult to pinpoint its exact dimensions, however, again, assuming it is smaller than gaaras meteor (since ill be honest i cant find a whole lot of solid arguments to the contrary) that feat is still early in tophs career. she has still improved alot since then

@gabriel gonzalez first, again, that building lifting was while standing on the sand that was swallowing the building before she could bend it, and judging by what i know of that crazed owl he was definetly bending all of that sand to push down on that building hard, second i wasnt just saying "what if" here, her development was shown, and she developed pretty far, to the point of being able to fight korra while old and wrinkled! also by bending his sand she can slow him down while she has no such controllable coating on her, between that, her literally constantly knowing where her gaara and all his sand is, and the adaptability and unpredictability shes shown far beyond what gaara has (if you look at his fights he uses simaler tactics in most while tophs all over the place) his speed wouldnt do quite as much for him as you may think

Loved this battle! And I was so happy that Toph won! I was kinda scared for awhile of this battle because of the possibility of Toph losing, because well I didn't wanna see Toph die lol. But she came through and that made it all the more satisfying! I'd go as far as to say this is probably my second favorite Death Battle.

I thought for a long time about where Toph got the metal rope thingy from, but being a hardcore Avatar fan I remembered that in one of the episodes Sokka gave her a fancy bracelet made out of space metal. That's probably what that is, assuming she can elongate and shrink it at will. I understand how Naruto fans would be upset about that since they probably haven't watched all of Avatar and therefore don't know about her space bracelet, so they probably should have mentioned that.
the only advantage that Gaara has is attack speed
Automatic defense, sand tougher than bones that are stronger than steel, can control sand enough to protect a village from an explosion of a mini nuclear bomb, can seal the enemy in a sand pyramid, make it sink into the ground or play a tsunami of sand on it and crush it with sand. It's like Goku vs. Krillin
Gaara has much more stamina, power (can casually shift thousands of tonnes of sand, can make his defence hard enough to break things harder than steel, stopped meteors, can make giant sand pyramids), defensive prowess (can easily stop village-sized explosions) etc.
He absolutely shits on Toph.

There is so much wrong with this Death Battle. I don't think ScrewAttack is biased against anime, but this episode (along with the Peach vs Zelda one) made it feel like they really try to root for the underdog. They even stated during the Goku Vs Superman fight that they gave Goku everything they possibly could because they were sure he'd lose. Also... freaking substitution jutsu and sand clones, WHERE WERE THESE!?!

This was actually a really good battle. I did learned a lot about both characters, and they seem cool in their own ways (I have barely seen Avatar or Naruto a few times). The matchup, however, seemed even until they mentioned some of the more advanced abilities of Toph; did't took much to see how she could counter nearly everything from Gaara's kit. But still, I wonder; instead of making them fight one against the other, if we could put them together on a team fight against other two people, who would be a good match against both of them? O_o

The "Sand Coffin...Sand Burial" line was so disappointing, it's one of my favorite lines ever, in general.
I would like to bring up a point. Sure, if Gaara does not have the sand armor he might win, but let's take that into account. Can he still stay in the air without sand, and how fast is his movement speed on land? If he can achieve the state of light feet that Avatar Aang or any airbender has by being a ninja, I think we have another point for Gaara.
Okay why didn't he do what he did with lee when the shell was just left behind. and why wasn't shenron apart of this if he was running low on chakira he would have used shenron?

1. Garra is controlling the sand with his chakra so Toph can bend it in theory, but shouldn't be able to control it completely, or at all.
2. That sand wave should've peeled the flesh from her bones before the Iron whip was able to wrap around her.
3.Sand coffin should've crushed her even with the armor.

I am honestly asking I watched it like five times and it still makes 0 sense...
When it came to the voice acting, while I wasn't entirely sure until I saw who voiced him, whenever I hear Gaara speak in this, I just keep thinking of Neomutant from TOME.
They over exaggerated the power of Toph and forgot about several things about Gaara. The absolute defense is so fast that it can block Amaterasu. And manipulating metal does not help much: Kimimaru's bones were stronger than steel, and after Kimimaru attempted to penetrate Gaara's defense with an attack, Kimimaru's final spear broke into pieces. Does not he have stamina? He fought a whole day against Madara. Soon after holding a meteor brought from the space with sand (yes, the meteor was lighter, but it is still a meteor). The thing I didn't like about that battle is that they didn't let gaara use shukaku when they let to pH use all her abilities

Nonetheless as the 2 started to care for each other later in the series gaara was able to use his chairs though I will say the bond wasn't as strong as the one made by nine tales and naruto it was still strong
They did say he lost Shukaku, so I'm not surprised they take that into account.
Dolphin Squared (Dolphin2) Not to mention that they said Gaara's father mistook Gaara for Shukaku itself since he had become that powerful. So bringing Shukaku in wouldn't have made much of a difference besides a bigger enemy. It controls sand like Gaara which would be useless on Toph. It's only advantage would be sheer size.

I really hate how they basically gave Gaara the stamina and chakra he had in part 1. He doesn't really even use the sand shield in part 2, and he has way more chakra. It's also weird to assume toph can bend his sand, even though it's been stated multiple times that it isn't normal sand. the sand is controlled with chakra, so she shouldn't be able to move it in any way.

The honest timing of the production of this death battle couldn't have made toph more likely to win than ever because about a month back I was watching a ton of naruto episodes and I actually witnessed Garra get Shukaku back from the Akatsuke and it's not only how dangerous just facing Shukaku alone but that would also mean a lot of the sand bending that toph did wouldn't work since our beloved Boomstick said, "but it's not all bad, having a digestive desert demon gives him control over 'all thing sand' using his mind to catch and crush his foes."
