    Jet City amps might be the most underrated amps on earth. I own a JCM800 and a 5150 Block letter, but bought a JCA50 about 6 years ago for £250...NEW!!! and its a beast and actually my favourite amp I own, It does the 800 thing on the Crunch channel, and a great 5150 impression (slightly less bass) on teh Lead channel...AND it takes my pedal board better than the 5150. Its incredible. The JCA 50 is basically a Soldano Hot Rod 50 ...but at 5-10% the price lool, cant go wrong.
    Been lurking here for a while, only commented a couple of times, great channel keep it up fella

    Just bought one Dave after watching your video, it came today and it's every bit as great as it sounded here. Jet City did the right thing giving you one to demo!

    Dave, Just discovered you a few weeks ago -now watching all of it.. Grew up in San Fran USA,
    saw Cream live at Winterland back in the day got to meet John Cippolina from Quicksilver.
    Your tone from 46: on is pure aural poetry, and your sonic heart-sharing transcends anything I have ever heard before.
    I have a valve AMPEG 50w Reverberocket 2 X 12 to get my Maple RIC 12 to sound right, and a Guitar Center brand Laguna (Blue maple cap) Alnico potted HBs (with coil tap) andaFloyd Rose for Cippolina wavers. Thanksfor the Orange CR120 comments, may have to trade my Ampeg! You are completely refreshing and your "12th fret scale" stuff is splendid.
    Cheers from St.Louis,and if you ever get over here, you are welcome to stay with our family.

    First off, EXCELLENT playing and cool attitude. Secondly, it is so refreshing to hear someone demo this amp and not just play heavy speed metal. The thing cleans up beautifully; I just ordered the new jet city 5lo, and I hope it sounds like this. Maybe it'll make me play like this guy, too! fingers crossed on that. GOOD GRAVY

    Now that's my kind of sound (showing my age !). Experimented with plugging my laptop into my Rowland micro cube to play this pretty loud - wife can't understand how my playing has suddenly got much better :) - she's out in the garden doing some flower stuff so can't hear the talky bits ! After a poor day spoilt by unwelcome stuff in the post this has cheered me up no end. Thanks Dave.

    I'm glad this amp is finally getting the credit it deserves. For those of you considering buying it, you NEED an attenuator with it. I couldn't get the volume past 1.5 before I was in pain.

    • @areyouavinalaff
      @areyouavinalaff 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hell yeah, 20 watts is still quite a lot of noise. what attenuator do you use?

    • @DrMobiusOfficial
      @DrMobiusOfficial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's unbranded. Some random home build. Fortunately I've had the amp for 2 years with the MV on 7 without any issues. It's FAR louder than my Silver Jubilee Mini, which is also 20 watts.

    Love your demos, mate. This and the Orange TH30 demo are just great. May need to return the fancy amp I got and buy one of these in its place as I have too many other upcoming expenses. Great playing of music I grew up with and really appreciate you doing a good quality, direct recording and putting the amp through its paces.

    If I was in the market for this amp, its super encouraging to know that there are near-hour long reviews on it. I hate when I'm researching an amp and the amp review is like 2 minutes 35 seconds....

    That last extended bit with you jamming out over the loop track? Wow......just, WOW!!!! You're spot on with your "full bore Plexi" tone assessment here...that 20 watt screamer of an amp, mated with your Lester? Pure blistering hot bluesy rock and roll BLISS! Jet City really knocked it clear out of the park with that amp, I think I need to get one...or maybe two, just so I can go stereo, ya know? Absolutely killer demo, you really put the amp through its paces (and then some) for us, thanks!

    I feel like I was transported back in time to a Free concert watching Paul Kossof play through his plexi. I believe it was Joe Perry who asked Soldano to make a 20 watt head that was more open and a little warmer sounding than the regular 20 watt Jet city. Fantastic man,raw and real

  • @thekitowl

    That’s a great tone with the les Paul , it’s got that slight woody tone that adds another dimension to the sound. It seems quite touch responsive
    As well, could be a Marshall beater.

    Go jet city about time some more manufacturers set you gear to demo
    You do great engaging demos

      They're great period. I have a 20 watt combo that I bought for $150 used. I tweaked it a little, put new Tubes in it, Ruby EL84s and Groove Tubes gold 12AX7 in the V2, V3 and V7 and an Electro Harmonix 12 AT7s in the V1 and V4. I also replaced the stock speaker with a Warehouse Guitars Retro 30 and replaced the reverb cable with a higher quality cable. It sounded good before but sounds great now and has more clean headroom. It sounded more like a Marshall before but now sounds almost Vox-ish. The Reverb stock is almost non existent at 10, the cable is really cheap. You can increase the Reverb by 20% by upgrading the cable.

    Thanks for this review Dave. What a spectacular amp at even a much higher price point. So into the jet city stuff. You are something on the axe and have a great presence. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent and valuable insight. PS I have you cranked up and on the highest quality possible. Could listen to rock out all day! Thanks for showing us what these things can do!

    We have the same taste in amps - yet another little gem worth grabbing. Retail the price is right. Not sure over the pond but here in the states you can get one pretty cheap often second hand. You already know I'm sure - but I'll say anyway - another great demo and playing, Dave.
    P.S. - don't fret about the mistakes, means you're human and playing w/o hiding behind all that software and editing. That's one thing I like about your vids, keeping it real.

    I upgraded the power tubes to Genalex Gold Lion EL84's and also bought a Mesa Recto 112 cab, and it sounds down right good. I also bought some premium preamp tubes, and it sounds so good. I have the original version of the amp, and I put Tube Dr tubes in it, and I wasn't real impressed as I was with the other set. I haven't tried switching them but someday I will.

    I am updating my previous posts. The other night I fired this up after setting in my bedroom, buried under a dust cover. I plugged it in Avatar 112cab, it blew me away. Why haven't I been using it? Well I have several other amps set up in various rooms, and i just don't play in the bedroom. I am just a novice rhythm player, but this does everything I need it to do in spades. The other 20 watter, the original version, I had trouble with tube socket while changing tubes, and power tube red plated. I am taking it to a tech for repair in next few days. I did not like the more aggressive sound of it.

    Another fab video Dave! TBH I think you need to push the power section more to get the most out of this amp - by turning it up (I understand that it would be way to loud for your house).

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @GuitarTalkunedited
      @GuitarTalkunedited 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An attenuator is exactly what you need - if you need recommendations I'll happily point a few out. Also you know there is a trick you can do with the FX loop and any volume based pedal?

    • @fromthesilence9583
      @fromthesilence9583 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend trying the volume pedal in the loop first as it sounds more natural, maybe running a EQ pedal with adjustable volume as well for more tweaks (I used the Morley Little Alligator). At least avoid cheap attenuators as it only made the sound more compressed, sucked out all the dynamics and cut's high end a bit for me, It could be human error but I did not like it. I personally just use my Jet City amps without most of the time on master 1.

    Great review! Looks like a great value amp for the price. In the UK they are selling new for less than 350.
    Not sure I need another 12AX7/EL84 amp tho. I wish they did an 6L6 or ideally EL34 circuit ..
    I reckon at 20w this thing is still too hot to get in to any real nice power amp saturation.
    I have a little 10w 12AX7/EL84 and that has to be dimed through a creamback 1x12 to get 'there'. Its still too loud. Gives me the tinnitus. :)

    • @davidstorm4015

    I have this amp and i also have a115 cab with a CTS from the mid 60's, and it just has that feel and response that is hard to find.

    If you recall, what speakers are you running through? It appears you are using the Orange cab. I just ordered this amp (used). You totally sold me on this amp. Love the late 60s/early 70s rock tone. Hendrix, Kossoff & Frusciante...so good. Well done.

      @@thedavesimpson Thank you sir. I'm assuming you are referring to the the Celestion T3760 G12T-75 and not the G12H-75 Creamback. Love listening to you play. Just noticed your follow up video "Jet City JCA20 HV - Chapter 2 - FULL VOLUME". Going to listen to it now. Cheers from Kansas City, Missouri.

    Awesome first you do katana which i own now a Jet city which I own, what next maybe
    throw a little love at the Fender amp. stay well clear of the mustangs though. Maybe a Fender champion might be in your budget range its solid state and cheap as chips if you can pick one up second hand.

    They could've thrown a dead rat to you and you would've make it sound good. Awesome playing! I'm temped to get one of these, it's cheap and sounds freaking good; and I don't even need yet another piece of gear. Subscribed.

    very page-esque towards the end. Very impressive. Thanks Dave. I'm looking at the Jet CIty range now and can't make my mind up. The JCA20VH certainly is great from hearing you play it....I would also like something a bit more Soldano. I'm just in contact with Simon at the moment.
    Question Dave: do you know what valves are in there? JC offer a JJ valve upgrade when you buy the amp. Just wanted to know if they were the standard or maybe the JJ upgrade. They do sound great whatever they are.

      My JCA50H came with unbranded tubes that simply said "Made in China". They weren't bad. I upgraded cuz I have a bunch of tubes in my stash. I'll also add that I pulled the chassis as I do work on amps, and I was VERY impressed with the build quality. Better than my 1989 Made in England Marshall. They are a great amp IMHO. Also, tubes are cheaper at tubedepot and places like that instead of the big box music stores. Price the tubes there vs. the upgrade price.
