my dream is to photograph Mountain lions in the wild. your shots were definitely Epic. and anyone who gets shots of mountain lions is Highly blessed. what a treat.
Awesome. I like how you took 'being in the right place at the right time' and amended it to "making sure you got in the right place at the right time" to grab these amazing shots.
That was awesome and epic as you said. Just watching the action and getting into the moment was thrilling and emotional. I have to confess it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing.
Wonderful pictures, and video. Sure glad you rushed out of the house to get them. The patience you wildlife photographers have is truly amazing to me. To stay there for hours, and go back for four days is amazing. Thanks for doing what you do, to bring wildlife into our lives, so we can appreciate these wonderful animals. We must do a better job of protecting them, so that generations to come will be able to experience them also.
Wow Steve, epic is the perfect word to use here. We live in the NE corner of Washington State up in the mountains and they are all around us. Unfortunately I have never had the privilege of actually seeing one, however I am sure that they have seen me :) Amazing photographs and video, thank you for sharing :))
13:47 me too, thx for sharing Steve, taking the trusted D850 - great action thought you'd being ducking in the car any minute. Of course didn't realize how far away you were at the time. Some really nice action!
I've seen just one in 20 years living basically among them. That one time was almost at dark when I was driving, the creature was sprinting alongside the road before it dashed off into the grass. There was just zero time to react, even if I had my camera at hand. I still remember that moment like yesterday, it was maybe a decade ago, haha. They are beautiful animals.
Very nice video, Now I know that this mountain lion was not running towards you..but rather the birds on its pray.... every time I see your intro to your videos it looks like it is running towards you and that you are much closer..Very glad that's not the case. All the Best !!!
Steve must say it was EPIC. Great job. I was notified of the sighting wish now I drove up from Colorado. I was saying the other day to my wife I hadn’t seen anything from Steve wonder if he was around for the sighting. Once again great job.
Amazing opportunity. I love shooting up there. Just moved from Minneapolis to Denver, so it should be easier. Thanks for reminding me to keep my shutter speed fast enough.
You have my thumb up just for showing these 2 dogs:D .What an exciting experience with the cougar! And you are really blessed if you have such friends who shares with you all that excitement.Great video, thank you very much for sharing with us.
Fantastic opportunity and it was epic indeed. We get cougar sightings occasionally here in our area but I haven’t had the chance to see one. Fingers crossed that I will some day when I have my gear with me but talk about having one served up on a silver platter! Nice friends to give you a call and great job working with what you had on short notice!
Wow. Very envious of your experience and luck! I’d heard about this story and wondered if you got there. I too hope I get to photograph a wild cougar, but would be over the moon just to see one! I’m always on the look out when in cougar country, to the point may have just made my kids a bit paranoid... 🤗
Awesome video Steve! That was a once in a lifetime epic opportunity and you got the chance video and photograph it. Living in Jackson Hole does have its benefits.
I watch a ton of photographers on TH-cam, I think the greatest tip I have ever gotten is when you said you shot at 1/2 second. Usually I never stray below 1/1000 because I’m afraid of motion blur. I have a Tamron 150-600 and a D500. Really low light gets me 2500 plus iso. After watching this video I shot a red tailed hawk(sitting on a light post)on a cloudy rainy gray day at 1/320 and got a nice sharp image with a 450 iso(auto iso). This is really huge for me. Thanks
It's miraculous that the cat was still there!! How exciting!! And so happy to see he/she got a meal too. SPECtacular!!! WOW!!!! There is a Russian TH-camr who rescued a Puma that was going to be put down at a zoo and now keeps it as a pet. You might get a kick out of watching a few episodes. It's called I Am Puma.
Wow! That was truly epic. The wide-angle, context shots were interesting as well. Quite a crowd of photographers and it looked like the cougar would be out of range of even a 600mm lens. Can you talk about how much cropping you had to do to get the images you wanted. The D850 seems to be the perfect camera for that shoot. Don't know how long a mirrorless camera could have stayed powered up, waiting for the perfect moment, in that kind of cold weather.
Great video. We were there for this epic encounter. It's not often one gets a wildlife opportunity like this ... especially when you can go into the Maverick and use the restroom, purchase hot chocolate and hot dogs, and have five bars of cell service the entire time!
Man, what an awesome opportunity. Have yet to see a cougar while I’ve been out there, but with a whole lot luck maybe this year as I plan to again spend couple weeks in the Tetons and Yellowstone again.
Epic is right! When you get an American Panther in your sights. Mountain lion are hard enough to come by as it is. Definitely a terrific opportunity, glad you got some real nice shots! Meanwhile I'm amazed at how many people have multiple thousand dollar lenses and kits out there. How the heck does one get a hold of big glass and justify it, much less a whole throng of people.
Only thing better than the look in your eyes were those of the cougar’s! Seen cat in the wild twice but they were moving faster than I could ever respond to. I swear one only took three leaps to cover a quarter mile wide wheat field. Thanks for braving the cold and sharing the results.
Love your work and content. So glad you are able to share what you do. I am curious though, what do you have for protection for shoots like this? I found myself recently eye to eye with a mountain lion cub and didn't really have anything on me because I was out to photograph deer. Maybe you have a video on this, but I couldn't find it.
I had heard about this from other photographers i follow and I was praying you got a call on it. Awesome footage! I think I saw Isaac in that video clip of all the photographers standing out there..i think..lol
Kinda looks like you are down in star valley, well actually looks like a bit closer to Jackson than that but man, that’s a nice area. When I lived in Utah I would drive through that area regularly. I wanted to buy some land in that area.
Steve Mattheis sorry, I meant at the beginning of the video when you are driving into town in the very beginning of the video. It appeared to me, and I’m just guessing for fun, the mountain lion was by the National Elk Refuge by that art exhibit building that has the really awesome Elk statues. (As you are heading toward the park)
WOW THIS WAS AMAZING! Question, do you ever use manual focus for your landscape or wildlife photography? I got a lens for a great deal but it only has manual focus. It has been quite a challenge. 😂 Thank you for your amazing videos and sharing your incredible photography! A
Is it hard in your area to meet mountain lion? I am from Europe and I have started planning a trip to America to photograph mountain lion. Can you recommend any place?
my dream is to photograph Mountain lions in the wild. your shots were definitely Epic. and anyone who gets shots of mountain lions is Highly blessed. what a treat.
Total sweetness! I don't see cougars much on videos! Thanks for your hard work and determination!!!
Awesome. I like how you took 'being in the right place at the right time' and amended it to "making sure you got in the right place at the right time" to grab these amazing shots.

Photograph one? Heck, I'd like to just see one in the wild someday. :)

So cool Steve! Glad you have friends who alert you. Sometimes camera "friends" want to hog a sighting. Was just loving living through it with you.
Great video and stunning still sequences Steve!!!

Truth
Wow. What an awesome experience
Yes it was 👍👍
Thanks for the vid, Steve.
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for sharing! Awesome, on my bucket list. Although Mountain lion sightings in Nebraska are rare.
They are rare here too for sure but sometime you just get lucky 👍
I watch a ton of photographers on TH-cam, I think the greatest tip I have ever gotten is when you said you shot at 1/2 second. Usually I never stray below 1/1000 because I’m afraid of motion blur. Holy Moses! How fortunate were you?! Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with all of us.
Thanks for watching 👍

Incredible!
Just wow, experience of a lifetime!
Very cool! I have always wanted to see a mountain lion in the wild but these opportunities are very rare.
Very rare...

Cool thanks I'll check it out👍
I saw a moutain lion on the webcam of the Rustic Inn at Jackson Hole, two day ago and reported it.
Excelentes imagenes del puma Steve. Enhorabuena por la experiencia y gracias por compartir.
Sheesh, my work is not far from there. I'm bummed I was out of town for all this. Glad you got some good photos!
Wow! That was truly epic. The wide-angle, context shots were interesting as well. Quite a crowd of photographers and it looked like the cougar would be out of range of even a 600mm lens. Don't know how long a mirrorless camera could have stayed powered up, waiting for the perfect moment, in that kind of cold weather.
The images shown were cropped a bit, but less than a 1.5x crop sensor would have shown. The carcass was only about 60 yards from us.
Great job, thank you !!!!! Greetings from Germany.
Thanks 👍👍
Great video. We were there for this epic encounter. It's not often one gets a wildlife opportunity like this ... especially when you can go into the Maverick and use the restroom, purchase hot chocolate and hot dogs, and have five bars of cell service the entire time!
Steve, great job!!! Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching 👍
OMFFFGGGG!!! You've really gone and done it this time, Steve. You've outdone yourself, top drawer!
Thanks!👍
Man, what an awesome opportunity. Have yet to see a cougar while I’ve been out there, but with a whole lot luck maybe this year as I plan to again spend couple weeks in the Tetons and Yellowstone again.
Yes, I've only seen a handful in the 40+ years I've lived here...
Great footage Steve!
What an amazing experience, so jealous! 😍😁🙏
Thanks!

They are amazing!
Awesome video. Would never believe a mountain lion would set up a dining room that close to a population center.
Yes, quite a rare treat 👍👍
Great! WOW!!
Love your work and content. So glad you are able to share what you do. I am curious though, what do you have for protection for shoots like this? Yes, Isaac was there but unfortunately he missed the first day.
Never clicked on anything faster than this video 😂
Hahaha 👍👍
Kinda looks like you are down in star valley, well actually looks like a bit closer to Jackson than that but man, that’s a nice area. When I lived in Utah I would drive through that area regularly. I wanted to buy some land in that area.
It was right in the town of Jackson 👍
Steve Mattheis sorry, I meant at the beginning of the video when you are driving into town in the very beginning of the video.
It appeared to me, and I’m just guessing for fun, the mountain lion was by the National Elk Refuge by that art exhibit building that has the really awesome Elk statues. (As you are heading toward the park)
Really cool wildlife experience Steve and nice photos and video
Steve do you ever use a hide in work?
I rarely do
For more than a moment I thought YOU were going to be dinner. Wonders of a long lens.
WOW THIS WAS AMAZING! Question, do you ever use manual focus for your landscape or wildlife photography? I got a lens for a great deal but it only has manual focus. It has been quite a challenge. 😂 Thank you for your amazing videos and sharing your incredible photography!
A
I rarely manual focus but lots of photographers do and it can be great
a Nikon z6 is great for wildlife photography and wildlife videography.
Is it hard in your area to meet mountain lion? I am from Europe and I have started planning a trip to America to photograph mountain lion. Can you recommend any place?
Yes it is very difficult to find mountain lions here. I wish I knew of a place where it wasn't...
Steve Mattheis I heard that in Torres del Paine it is not that hard. I will think about that. Thanks for responding:)
In manual at 600 mm how do you focus with the cat going down hill a coming towards you.
Manual exposure. Auto focus. That lens focuses amazingly fast.
Yes, what LeRoy said 👍
Thank you I will try it.
What’s battery life like in the cold? I imagine cold batteries don’t last to long.
They don't last as long as when warm but better than you might think
My goal has been to photograph and record a wild mountain lion
