      @Nawal Ahmed by ratifying navada as a state when it did not meet the minimum population and economic standards to sneak another term in for one. Then establishing executive powers not granted to him by any form of democratic power or the constitution he was in a way a dictator. Some will argue that under marshal law he did what he had to. I disagree. He forced 10s of thousands of people to their death in a cival war. Picture the government taking all peoples property on retirement. We would fight to stop it right? We Lincoln forced law into stealing peoples property and way of life. This would not fly today. Morally yes iy seemed the right thing to do but we are a democracy and he over stepped his boundaries. Future presidents would attempt to do the same for bad reasons and would be stopped by votes. Its a two edged sword.... food for thought

    • @Potato-Eye
      @Potato-Eye 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Nawal Ahmed another analogy is as follows. Cars that are owned before new smog laws came into effect are still exempt from smog. So its awful that the Gov would steal peoples property retroactively.

    • @dextervinant4874
      @dextervinant4874 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Curtis Lowery Well, while I agree with the basic points of your argument it boils down to the fundamental difference in how people view democracy and how the US should be run. Lincoln was able to seize a good deal of executive power beyond what his station could before, so did FDR. In both cases one can argue it was warranted (and, it was generally agreed it was) it that it wasn’t but you cannot argue it is undemocratic. Some people (perhaps rightly so) that democracy cannot sustain itself without strong rulers in times of crises. This is a common thread in human governance since the Tyrants of Greece (essentially elected dictators for crises). So tyrant or autocrat/dictator I’m with you, terrorist... not so much.

    • @daltontemple
      @daltontemple 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mac Berg Lincoln wasn’t going to free any slaves. He had no intention to. Meanwhile General Lee said he’d free them all to avoid bloodshed. Why would men go to war to preserve a system where the slaves are viewed as property? Why put your life on the line for property? I assume you’re also unaware of the Union burning down the south’s buildings like crazy. Hundreds and thousands. Every square inch of Atlanta and every historical museums and theaters, etc. Confederate or not. Innocent women and children died. The war started not due to “states rights” but like most do, money. That and they wanted to succeed from the Union. It was their right constitutionally to do so. Taxes were also waaay too high due to the cotton being picked and shit went sideways from there. The one good thing that came out of were the slaves finally being freed. Which the south already agreed on. Remember, victors write the history books. 👱🏻‍♀️👩🏽‍🦱🧑🏼‍🦰🧑🏾‍🦱

And he's especially accurate when he says it's harder to control people when their heroes are badass rebels.
