This is utterly an urban myth. What prevented the 2600 and Intellivision versions of Donkey Kong from being as good as they could be are the same factors that prevented all games from being better: limited cartridge ROM space and a limited development period. On the 2600, Garry Kitchen specifically told Atari management that be could make a very faithful port of the game in 8K, but they told him no, you only have 4K, and the end consumer will buy it anyway as long as it bares a passing resemblance to the arcade original. So he did the best that was possible given the extremely small ROM space he had. And that was Garry Kitchen, who when working with Activision with less restrictions, created Keystone Capers and Pressure Cooker, two of the best games of the era.

Even worse not only is the intelevision version of donkeykong abysmal but it is not even compatible with the intelevision 2,now we will never know if coleco did this to purposely hurt the sales of the intelevision 2, since mattel around that time no longer produced intelevision 1 systems anymore, Not only that but coleco also did not released a version for the atari 5200, as a result atari took revenge on coleco by not releasing their completed pac man game on the colecovision.

There's finally an awesome version of this game available for the Intellivision with everything the arcade version had. It's called DK Arcade, and there's a second version called D2K Arcade. It's so good it shows just how bad the fighting between Coleco and Mattel must have been back then. I think you can still buy them online from the classic game publishers website.

Yes you need to get a hold of the homebrew version that was released last year. It isn't cheap but there is a copy on Ebay. It is arcade perfect. Glad to see you finally got yourself an Intellivision.
Here's a bit of a fun rumor I've learned about Donkey Kong: Apparently when Nintendo was porting the game to the Colecovision, they were contracted by Coleco to make worse versions of the game for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision solely for the purpose of making Donkey Kong for the Colecovision seem better than it is.

I disagree with most people in that I think Mark works well with a co-host. He's great by himself and he's obviously hilarious and is no newbie when it comes to reviewing or playing games. However, he occasionally lets his silliness get in the way of his reviewing. He's very entertaining of course but I think a calmer, more serious, critical and thorough co-host would be a welcomed addition in my book.

Interesting fact: if you grab the ROM dump of this game, and write a program on a C64 to read every other byte and then display it on a bitmap screen....you will see a graphic element or two hinting that Coleco may have had intent to make a 3rd screen.

Man, I remember waaay back in the day playing Intellivision games at my friend's house & having to juggle the two different systems. What a pain that was. FYI:The Intellivoice doesn't work with the Intellivision 2 either, which is a bummer since B-17 Bomber & Space Spartans are fantastic games. Also, there are joystick-style replacements for that stupid disk available that make gaming on the Intellivision much less of a chore. I have two on mine.
So many great games, this one was a more difficult game because there was a lag in the jump of Mario from the time you pressed the button to the time he got in the air.
but in all seriousness. The intellisvison was my first ever game console. And I had Donkey Kong on it. so seeing and actually hearing this like 26 years later brings tears of nostalgic joy to my eyes. I really don't care if this version sucks (I was 3 years old). I hope one of the upcoming reviews is going to be burger time, because that was my favorite on the intellivison.
The real question still lingers: What brand of conditioner do TJ and Derek use? Would you rather have curly or straight hair? Maybe Mark can make a review of their hairstyles.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo never did any Atari, Intellivision or Coleco games, they just licensed Coleco, Atari and Ocean to do their own ports (Coleco did the console versions, Atari the american computer versions and Ocean did the UK computer versions)
I have to agree - sometimes the tone in his voice changes from sentence to sentence and even midway a sentence. I suspect that something went wrong on the editing because other videos don't have this problem.
This is hilarious because I remember playing this at my cousin's house when I was a kid. I had an Atari and he had an Intellivision. I always thought the Intellivision was so much better. I was jealous. The pecking order went Colecovision, Intellivision, then Atari. Then I played the Intellivision. It was Donkey Kong, and although I the graphics were slightly better, the damn thing was way too difficult to control with that pile of shit controller. I don't know who thought that was a good idea.
Isn't it ironic that in 2012, Intelligent Vision came out with Donkey Kong Arcade, which has better graphics, better gameplay, and all of the levels, music, and intermission screens intact? Even more ironic is that Elektronite came out shortly thereafter with DKII which has everything that DKArcade boasted, and threw in 5 more additional new screens? I guess that rumor that Coleco was scaling back Intellivision games to make money off of Mattel, and sell Colecovisions was TRUE!
other than the controller i believe this port is a lot better than the atari 2600 but the 400/800 was the best because it included all 4 levels in proper USA order
I have Donky Kong for Intellivision, and it sucks. Nintendo really didn't care when they made the Intellivision version. They didn't make good use of Intellivision's abilities at all. As mentioned in the review they only included two of the four levels, and the controls were bad. It is like Nintendo made the Coleco version and the Atari version, then remembered Intellivision had 20% of the gaming market at the time and quickly threw this version together over the weekend for a few extra bucks.
A few years late, but actually Coleco made the Colecovision, Intellivision, and Atari 2600 ports of Donkey Kong. They deliberately hamstrung the other versions to make the Colecovision look better by comparison. That's also why there's no 5200 version. The 5200 was a slightly modified Atari computer and was about as powerful as the Colecovision, so they didn't port the game to it to avoid competition.
The Intellivivion controller is a great controller much better then the Sony Playstations with the buttons instead of a D- Pad, just think of the Disc as the predecessor to the D-Pad. The buttons are not akwardly placed on the Intellivision 1 controllers, I never had much trouble controlling all the games I played on my Intellivision and I'm not very good at video games compared to most people.
Also Mark, you are aware that Nintendo didn't really develop this version right? They only got credit because... well, they own the series. But hey, at least it's another CGR review that's more satisfying then alexander4488's review of the game.

i remember once i had this 50 games in 1 cartridge for my old Atari 2600 and i remember one of the games on it was Donkey Kong, it was pretty cool lol

No, even that version only had 3 out of the 4 levels. The Atari 8-bit computer version (400/800) had all 4 though and it looked and played fantastic.

I had this ~30 years ago, it wasn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be. I mean for today it's bad, but for back then, it was pretty decent.
