- my childhood friend Ed was half russian, half german, but the Russian influence was more pronounced in his home because it was his mother that was Ugoslavian, a survivor of the Camps, and his father had passed a long time before i met him. my father is a Russian language teacher and scholar, so i notice that i have a very different take on that people than is encouraged here in the US, with all the anti-slovic sentiment all through the 80's due to the cold war and the unfortunate imprisoning of the great Russian people by the communists and the relabeling of that great country as the Soviet Union. the Slavic people, and language, are the precursors to the Germanic people and languages that the scholars usually label as 'indo-european' based. this is false, and it traces more accurately back through Slovakia, hence the celebratory nature of this song. no, i've never been to Moscow, and am thoroughly pro-American.
