Peak District - Winter Camp at Crookstone Knoll on Kinder Scout

  • This week's mini Peak District adventure was a last minute winter wild camp at Crookstone Knoll on Kinder Scout. I spotted a nice little weather window so packed my kit and headed to Hope. I walked up via Hope Cross and enjoyed a great evening gazing up at the night sky. The tent froze, my camera gear froze but it was a thoroughly enjoyable night.

      Dean Read What tent or bivvy would you recommend for 1person, I have a Yellowstone 1man but it's not very sturdy, I need something compact to take on day hikes etc

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cinda 19 I have a Wild Country Zephyros 1 and that's been great, others I know have the Vango Banshee which is supposed to be equally as good. My bivvy is just an Army Goretex bag which I've had for over 10 years and would highly recommend.

    Hi there Dean.....aaaaaahhhhh it's good to be out again. I know where your at...good vibes even in the freezing cold. Well done to the trail runner. I'm like you I admire there fitness. Wow you captured a beautiful wild morning there. All the best. Mark.

      +Wye Explorer Thanks for watching Mark. It was a stunning night and another great one for my mind / soul. I needed a bit of contemplative time I think to work a few things out. As for the fell runner, madness but I'm thoroughly in awe of the fitness levels of the guys and girls that do it.

      Thanks for watching Mark, I'd recommend Grindslow Knoll on Kinder Scout and leaving your car at Edale or you can get the train/bus there. You can see what it looks like by watching my "Kinder Scout above the clouds" video from a few months ago :-)

    • @markwild4855
      @markwild4855 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dean Read cheers for that, is there plenty of parking at edale? And when would be best to park there weekends/weekdays?

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mostly camp during the week as I work shifts. I usually leave my car near the school / Old Nags Head at Edale. I've never had any issues with space even though there is perhaps only room for 10-15 cars. When camping I arrive in the early / late afternoon so most of the day walkers have gone home. There is a big car park near the railway station but I'm not sure how much that costs as I've not used it before, I'm a cheapskate so usually use free spots :-) failing that you could park at Hope where I park in this video as there is normally lots of parking there, you could then head up to Crookstone Knoll and camp at the same spot as I did. or there is a flat spot at an old quarry just below the top if you want to stay out the wind

      @@DeanRead Wow! Creepy, especially being on your own. I was night fishing many years ago, on my own, relatively in the middle of nowhere. All zipped up and about to try and get some sleep when I heard someone run up to my bivvy and just stop dead right behind my bivvy. I called out "hello?", but they didnt reply. Jumped up and stepped out to see what they wanted.. and there was absolutely no-one there. I never been so creeped out.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Olly, I haven't done a video on that subject yet but I have had lots of requests. I've got pretty lazy recently when it comes to packing so usually just cram everything in :-) I have had to resort to taking my larger Berghaus rucksack on recent trips due to the amount of camera gear I take. In summer though I usually just take a bivvy, sleeping bag, food, cooking kit and a head torch and keep it as simple as possible.

    Hi Dean,
    I've only just come across your channel by chance ... you videos are excellent and very inspiring - thank you !
    I'm just getting back into camping now that my son's getting older, and am looking for suitable venues far enough away to be an adventure, but not too far away if it all goes wrong ! The Peak District seems ideal but I wanted to ask, have you ever had any issues with wild camping there ? I note from the National Park's website that they expressly forbid wild camping ...
    Kind regards,
    Matt

      +Matthew Benjafield Hi Matthew thanks for watching. Personally, I've never had any issues while wild camping. I always try and stay out of view and make sure I arrive late and leave early. Also always try and leave no trace. I know camping isn't strictly legal but I'm sure if you stay well away from buildings and roads and out of view you'll be ok. I spoke to a warden once who basically said that its the fools who camp in full view, next to roads and go setting fires everywhere that they don't want. Thanks again for watching, ATB Dean

    Hi Dean, loved the video looked bloody freezing up there. The wife watched it with me while we were having breakfast and I quote " he,s just like you, absolutely off his trolly, sleeping out like that and saying he loved it!" Little does she understand why we do it. All the best from East Yorkshire.

    how do you do the low light photography and time lapse film ... looks really good.
    OOnce did a overnight hike from Chinley to Edale over... Kinder awesome except for the fog lol

      +paul0gb14 paul h oski the time lapse video is just long exposure images stitched together, I shoot video at 24 frames per second so I need to take 24 images for 1 second of video. I stitched the images together with iMovie on my Mac but there are lots of programs that can do it. Thanks for watching Paul

    Greetings form Ireland! Nice camera work, Dean. Always a challenge to get decent quality time lapse shots of the night sky, there's so much light pollution in the northern hemisphere. Great adventure and thanks for the upload.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +martin critchley Thanks for watching Martin. I wasn't so lucky this time with my night time lapses, my previous attempt was when we had a cloud inversion so the light pollution was minimal. Also, this time it was below freezing so I kept getting frost on the lens. fingers crossed i'll get some good conditions for my next attempt :-)

    Just found your channel, you've got some amazing shots! But I was just foundering how do you record your sound so clearly even through wind? Do you use some sort of microphone?

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tomas, I use a RODE VideoMic Go with a wind protector / dead cat. They are excellent microphones and I'd highly recommend getting one

    • @TomasBeing
      @TomasBeing 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohh okay, I will definately look into that, as recording voice while hiking without one is a terrible idea as I've realised last! Thanks for reply!
