  • Video of Michael Evanko and Ryan Monroe fly fishing for trout on the Lackawaxen River in Pike County, Pennsylvania. This video was shot on publicly accessible water. Ryan is the only full-time fishing guide currently offering float trips on the Lackawaxen River. This float covered approximately 12 miles of water. The Lackawaxen is a tailwater to Lake Wallenpaupack and a tributary to the Delaware River. Because of its tailwater status, it can be subject to quick changes in flows. When we started out trip the flows were very high but they dropped several hundred CFS in a matter of an hour. Ryan fishes with fly tackle and also with spin and float rod tackle. Evanko catches fish in this video with Squirmy Wormy, Hot Spot Pheasant Tail, Psycho Prince Nymph, and Caddis Butt patterns. One of my favorite rivers. Difficult to fish the last few years with the releases on the weekends. Fished it this past weekend, caught several nice heavy bows, browns and brookies. Great video Mike. Nice to know there's someone to get a hold of for a float trip. Have to keep it in mind.

      Beautiful river. Ryan was telling me that the company that manages the releases are supposed to be lowering releases on the weekend for the fishermen. Don't know if that's been happening consistently or not.

      Wooly Bugged if you want to try another great trout river, try the Lehigh river anywhere from the Jim thrope area all the way through Palmerton and walnutport all the way to Northampton hold very large trout. A friend and I have recently discovered that the river holds very big trout and we have got on to mostly 15+ inch browns and rainbows and over the last 3 days alone we have over 6 fish over 20 inches.

    After watching this video, I was up in the Pocono's fly fishing for a week and booked a float trip with Ryan down the Lackawaxen. Awesome trip and Ryan was amazing. The dam release had the river high and very fast, so the fishing wasn't great, but I still caught some. Mike is right, just floating the river is an experience as my girlfriend can confirm, (she was camped out in the stern taking pictures).
    We rounded a bend and Ryan stopped the boat telling me there was a huge golden trout about 50 feet in front of us. No Way, it's a rock, I kept saying. It almost came down to bet but I'm no fool, it IS his river. We float down closer, like almost on top of it, and OMG, it was like a 27+ inch golden trout. I swung a few nymphs at him, and he finally sucked my fly in. I set the hook, he turned his head and snapped off. This was in clear water, 15 feet away, we all saw it. But WOW !
    If you're up in the area, I highly recommend Ryan and Float Drop Guide Service.

    I love the drift boat, 1 98% fishing time, 2 keeps you in the high stick position all the time, 3 cover a lot of river, 4 no need for 80 foot casts, 5 short line in high winds, 6 almost drag free drifts while floating, 7 no trees in the way if you want to back cast......back to #1 and repeat.

I gotta thank you for are the places you go to fish at and let us know. My PA streams bucket list grows every week.

    In other words, you wanted a lazy day of fishing, I can understand that in a boat all you have to do is just cast! Looks like you had a good time never the less. I myself was never much for boats but some like it a lot. I am sure that those Brookies are happy that you have taken them off the agenda for a while. I myself like the little streams you have to hike some to find. Even when I go out west I look for those places. My old 8'6" Scot 5 wt is a favorite rod of mine, had it for 30 years now.

      It may be " lazy" but its a great way to cover water, and all the fish 🐟 were quality. Nice to change it up. Mike is doing a great job w channel. + a big Brookie 😎

      @SirJohnny9999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      George ... I agree with you about fishing from the boat while floating. Out west, on the Bighorn River in particular, we use the drift boat strictly for scouting lots of water. When we find a pod of rising fish, we anchor, just out of the boat and fish from shore. My friends like to dry fly fish, and then I come in behind them with nymphs. On the Bighorn (at least), if you find pods of rising trout, you will also have many fish feeding on nymphs underneath. Tight Lines.

    Good fishing day! Had an upper body work out instead of the stepper huh ;-) Beautiful fish and nice looking flies. I like your gritty squirmy, you tie that one? The caddis butt was cool, looks like a pretty straight forward tie, imitating a nymph and cased caddis. Didn't you fish with this guide last fall? I didn't catch what he said about finding a "'---------------" and all the rainbows will be there. What did he say? I'm surprised it wasn't a blizzard of cotton wood in the air, or were they in the water, looked like foam?
    Thanks for the "trip" Mike! 👍😎

    • @WoolyBugged

      Joe Duca he said find a golden, as in golden trout. When you find a big one holding deep, they are typically accompanied by other fish you can’t see as easily.

      Rudy, one of these days I'll take the indicator off and use some weighted nymphs.

  • @beebob1279
    @beebob1279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You won't find skinny fish in that river. It's chuck full of food. Dangerous as all get out. If you see the river rise get to whatever side you can. The release of water off the Wallenpaupack is massive and will drown you. I've been lucky. Either I'm just arriving when the water rises or get there after it's been rising.
    The trout do come up from the Delaware. I learned this about fifteen years ago when I accidentally came across a bunch at my fishing spot. A couple of guys were surprised to see them up from the Delaware so early in the season. That's how I learned of the migration up the Lackawaxen. I fish it about two or three times a season as I'm getting older and have other things to do.

    Mike,
    Have you ever tried Mike's garlic salmon eggs on any of these streams in PA? I live in Jersey and fish the Toms River in the trout conservation area ( artificial flies and lures only). Only allowed 1 trout a day and minimum length of 15 inches.
    ength of 15 inches. I've only been catching fish up to 13 inches, why is that do you think?

      pahuntnut your 100 percent right they keep taking more and more access every year on this river it’s sad .. what’s even crazier is it’s state stocked stream and there no access on 13 miles of it !! Float drop guide service is only one who can get someone all access in his boat!! it’s really awesome to float whole river ...
