I did not expect the silly guy who edited the first video to turn around, cad cam and machine an case out of billet aluminum. You have my respect man +subs 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Even for a prototype this was amazingly well done. While the finish may not have been what you wanted you made a pretty classic sound profile and overall interesting and clean design. Can't wait to see where this goes in the future!
As a mechanical engineer myself I was shocked at the choice of cnc vs 3d printing. As, cnc is quite difficult to cut out sharp angles with tall walls Still, very well made. Subscribed 😊
No way! Glad to see this project was made by a fellow Boilermaker. Was already thinking about how hard it would be to get into Bechtel to make one of these.
I like this guy, excellent video! I've never seen the manufacturing process since that's often obscured for trade secret reasons and this is just super fascinating to watch
I’m just getting into learning how to make my own keyboard as well and this video getting to see the process and hear what you learned was super inspiring! Thanks so much for sharing
dude, this was literally my dream. When i was in college, i was dreaming about making some hardware stuff and make a money of it. However, after graduation, i got into completely different sphere, and all my ambitions faded away. Don't be like me! Chase your dreams
All I wanted is to find a way to make a keyboard PCB for an existing case, and maybe save some money instead of buying a new product. But the whole process looks like a f**kin journey to a Mordor, while a legion of different beasts want to clap your cheeks. Mad respect for the dedication to the craft and patience.
please don't stop! I watched your toher video(s) and I love it!!! Your humor is on point and still the level of detail and background information you are giving is superb. I am in the process of creating my own keyboard as well, so please keep it up. You have a big fan already.
This was surreal to watch i went on a very similar journey last year! I made a 40% keyboard out of 360 brass but i only had access to a 3 axis cnc mill and had a couple not to my standard but usable cases left over they’ve been lying around so if you’re interested they’re yours
I don't care if you only have 342 subscribers, it's 343 now, and I wanna see more of this. One day. I'm currently doing something remotely close to your project, by trying to put a 6x16 ortholinear layout into a KBD75 case, with a custom PCB, and this video here gave me life and energy to persist. 🙏
I just strated filming my video for designing my custom mechanical keyboard and came across your video for inspo holy crap entertaining and informational love it!!!!
Is there any way I can get the files for your PCB and parts list as I'm trying to do the same thing as you but I have no prior experience and I plan to expand my knowledge on this field. also loved the vid
I’m surprised that you have under 1000 subscribers, keep the effort and remember this message before I get washed away by the coming thousand and hundred thousands of subscribers
Insane. Do you have a rough estimate on how much material cost went into the case? I assume the CNC, laser cutter, etc. usage was free, but do you know how much that'd cost if outsourced to a shop?
There is a big difference between one-off costs and production run costs, because it is always cheaper to buy materials in bulk and it is very time consuming for manufacturers to setup for just a single prototype. If you play your cards carefully and your design is simple you could probably stay under 200-300 USD for material costs for a single prototype. However, labor costs are expensive and I've heard that you can expect to pay at least 500 USD for a single prototype to be manufactured. Again, it depends on the design complexity so you can expect it to reach up to 1000 USD if you aren't careful
First you did an amazing job with your first keyboard. second, did you really get hired to use the CNC, that's actually quite awesome, are you still working at this place
If I'm ever going to sell a product, I would never run a group buy format. I dislike how it moves all the financial and logistical burdens from the seller to the consumer and it's one of the aspects of the keyboard hobby we need to get rid of
i think the resources to create your own keyboard from scratch are pretty accessible so i wouldnt be discouraged, although if you were looking to make one out of metal it will be a pretty big timesink and moneysink
You can try to make the case from wood. I don't have access to a nearby CNC machine or any 3d printer, so I basically created a friction fit case using power tools.
It's not typical for keyboard designers to create machine code and actually operate the CNC machines, most just send their designs to overseas manufacturers for a few rounds of prototypes before production. However, this still requires an understanding of CNC machining limitations during the design process. Whether or not you machine it yourself, it will still cost a lot of money.
yeah you really did go beyond everything I would have expected in terms of building the keyboard. for me I don't see myself going quiet that far, but it was very interesting to watch the full process @@koovin02
I actually had plans to use POM, but the sheet of plastic came warped and remained warped after waterjet cutting. So I ended up going with aluminum since it was easier

bro, the editing is hilarious, and the design was so slick! I really hope your video will blow up, cause it deserves all the attention!

3d printing I don't believe works as well for keyboards
@@quantumxp i am using just a pla for my keyboard. yep it sucks.. i prob order carbon fiber plate and acrylic back
Guys he actually went out of his way to get hired just to use the machine. Very dedicated, i rate this experience a 9/10
You are crazy man, I did not think you would upload a second part hahaha I laughed so much with this videos. Awesome result btw, amazing work!!
That opening hit me so hard, especially when my accounting class has 5 exams and a final test and a final project.
Man, don't be so hard on yourself, that thing is incredible and you did it all yourself. Next one will be even better

Hello , can you share some info about the daughterboard at 3:52 , like what is the model ? Where to buy etc , thanks in advance
C3 unified daughterboard, purchased from cannonkeys. I don't think it's for sale on there anymore but I believe it is on divinikey
@@koovin02 yes sir. Thank you very much
Man’s is still in school and putting out this quality of work! Great job, you have a bright future ahead :)

unironically one of the best keyboard youtubers :)

this was so damn cool, btw what cad software did u use to design the board?
Nice vid mate, good luck with the school n vids grind
respect man! this made me want to do this but also showed me there's no way i can do this haha

i really like your channel man
Can u make a keyboard pcb with pi Pico board as the controller
THIS IS GREAT!
I've never heard the instrumental version of idol and that is all I got from this video
HOLY SHIT ITS HERE HES BACK!
I expect a video any day now! HorsieV2 inbound!
nah no way you edit that lego building part in on the typing test im crying 😭

You can probably make the other 4 and resell them to recoup a bit of the fees.

too much 💀

bruh how lucky do i have to be? i just saw your PCB video xD
can you post 3d model?
More confirmation I don't want to be in this hobby. Thanks for the cool video, I already spend to much time building fight sticks.

Bro how do you have only 300 subs, your content is great :)
Damn you did whole thing in cad. Did you learned it just for creating case for keyboard?
Nah I have prior experience with Fusion 360

Hey man, just wanted to say I love the video, the production quality is on point👌
Btw we have the same name lmao
What I learned from this: let's buy a ready made case! ;)
very hands on, nice job. But this is why I just throw my cad designs to some chinese manufacturer for a few hundred and call it a day
I have to call Gene now!
i waited
The HR would like to have a chat with you Kevin
I dont know if anyone other than me noticied that you work at Haas, a f1 team, which is really cool, the keyboard looks amazing!
nah, just a university machine shop. haas is a company that sells CNC machines
oh my bad, still very nice though!
finally man

hearing yoasobi - idol without lyrics was a strange experience 👍
The machines he used I'm a Transformer 😂
nice video but am I stupid or is your space bar upside down
It is, I just prefer it that way
You need to list out the things you learnt in making this keyboard.

Not anymore 😭😭

You can try to make the case from wood. I don't have access to a nearby CNC machine or any 3d printer, so I basically created a friction fit case using power tools.
This is kindof a reality check. Assembling a keyboard, fine. but making one? idk.

Hi gene, a guy is maxing out our budget cap by making keyboards.

But I'm studying to be one and you did breddy gud copy pasting *
