Incredible to look back and see how far things have come. Digibeta was my first experience with real professional production. My old boss was one of the first in the USA to have one of the 500 decks. Serial number in the single digits. It was the final output for the Jimmy Neutron episodes. I think he still has it.

Thanks to D1, every capture card consumer and pro is based on D1 standard with the exception that pro capture cards can capture at 720x486 for NTSC and up to 10bit.

Why is there this graphical dummy representing the digibeta machine in this clip? It was not developed by then???

Panasonic's D1/D2/D3 format was more popular in NTSC markets but got completely SLAUGHTERED by Betacam in PAL markets

      D1 was a Sony/Bosh format and D2 was Sony/Ampex format.

Errata: Sony made the D1 (4:2:2 Component Digital, Uncompressed) and D2 (4 Fsc Composite Digital, Uncompressed). Both used 19mm (3/4-inch) tape. Panasonic made 1/2-inch formats D3 (4 FSc Composite Digital, Uncompressed) and D5 (4:2:2 Component Digital 10-bit). Digital Betacam was the 4th format, but Sony would not let SMPTE brand it as "D4," because that was an unlucky number in Japan, like "13" is unlucky superstition in the USA.
