  • In this video I will be discussing John C. Calhoun, Thomas Green Clemson, and The Fort Hill Estate. Fort Hill is located on the campus of Clemson University and both the Calhoun and Clemson families are strongly connected to the estate and Clemson University. In fact, the Calhoun's and Clemson's both called Fort Hill home and are responsible for the home as it currently stands.
Both John C. Calhoun and Thomas Green Clemson came to Fort Hill by marriage. John C. Calhoun married Floride Calhoun, nee Colhoun, his second cousin. Her family owned the property that would eventually become Fort Hill. Thomas Green Clemson married Anna Maria Calhoun, daughter of John C. and Floride Calhoun, and he eventually inherited the land and residence after Maria passed away. After Thomas Clemson passed away, per his will, the property was left to the state of South Carolina to establish an agricultural college that eventually became known as Clemson University.
I give a brief history of John C. Calhoun and his controversial history that includes his political and personal beliefs. Calhoun had a career in national politics that spanned 40 years. Also, I cover the role that Thomas Green Clemson played in the founding of what is now Clemson University. Clemson served as a diplomat to Belgium, served in the American Civil War, was an agriculturist, was a minerologist, accomplished musician, and painter.
Finally, I will give a tour of the mansion and give as much detail as I can. This is a remarkable piece of history and almost all of the furnishings in the residence are original. Fort Hill was originally a four room house built by the Reverand James McElhenny and at that time it was called Clergy Hall. After the Calhoun's took ownership, they expanded the home to 14 rooms keeping the original four rooms as part of the expansion.

Great video and interesting facts. I have a question, does John Calhoun have any connection with the clan colquhoun?

Thank you for watching! I am not sure on your question but his father, whose name was Patrick Calhoun, was from Donegal, Ireland. I hope you have a great day!
