You have helped me rethink about how I view blogging. I always thought I had to have one niche. Not so. I never thought about blogging as being a long conversation. Watch out everyone! I can't shut up about my dislike of how public schools are run and I am a public school teacher!!
I just held my nose and jumped yesterday. Dropped $96 on a WordPress domain I was NOT ready for. Then I watched your 10 things not to do when starting a blog. I didn't think it would be so encouraging! Now I'm devouring your vids one after another. I'm still a bit stuck on this one. I'm passionate about writing and mental health. Both of which I'm still learning. I am in no way an authority and I frown upon people who say they are. Both of those things are so very personal. My goal is to keep my voice humble. I'm still finding my way and I'm inviting the reader to ride shotgun. My ideas are incredibly scattered but the main gist of my blog is mental health/ finding happiness after trauma. And some recipes. Because a lot of us PTSD kids have unhealthy relationships with food. Am I reaching? I plan to include coping techniques and maybe a few strategies for gaining the courage to start working out (for mental health, not necessarily weight loss or muscle gain) and how to ease into it when you've spent years on the couch with depression. Am I too scattered for one blog?
I wouldn't say that is reaching or too scattered at all and remember that you don't have to be an "expert" or call yourself one. You should just be knowledgeable about the topic and never pretend to know anything you don't. As you research topics, you will learn more and be able to share more with your audience. It's a constant learning process.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for mistake number 3. I really needed to hear this. I almost didnt start my blog and have been thinking about changing it because of this very reason. I felt like capsule wardrobes and fashion in general is such a popular topic and I was afraid of the competition that it would bring. But now I am looking at it differently. I promise there are so many times I wake up and go Qua what are you thinking?? You are going to graduate college and start a blog and a business? You are nuts! But then I load one of you guy's video's there is usually one or two points that you guy's make that just hit the nail on the head for me. Man please don't stop what you are doing.

Love this guy! All I ever heard before was to micro-niche, but that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted to start broad and suspected I'd find my perfect spot along the way. That's just what Alex said!!! Very encouraging. Glad I found this channel.
You honestly are the first blog I really enjoy, you are so honest, straight forward, no bull shit, authentic. Love you, I do hope to learn from you because as I stated before I am a cancer survivor and also have type two diabetes and have read through proper eating I can get rid of insulin and metforman. Two things that still tie me to my doctor. I really want to be totally free of doctors and their drugs that they push on a person. I do not like their god complex. Also I want to drink a healthy green drink without it costing me 50 or 60 a month. Right now I have a very low budget to work with, my rent costs me half of my income, the other half goes to food and necessary things with nothing left for growth or savings.
Love your straight to the point advice. No fluff no sugar coating. I cant stop talking about creating a blog and the online oportunities I even went to some local conferences but never put anything to practice. How I can make a blog about that even without experienced myself?

I'm a college career counselor and I always tell students to not follow your passion, follow your interests. You need experience to develop passion just as you stated. So you're absolutely correct. The problem is that many people spend so much time trying to find their passion that they don't do anything. They get stuck. It may sound like a cliche, but we all have our nature. If you just pay attention to how you feel from moment to moment when you do something you'll find that some things turn you on and some things turn you off and lots of things will be neutral. The difference is can be very subtle at times, once you tune into it you'll find that certain things give you more energy and others don't. It's like following breadcrumbs. Some examples: feeling satifaction when you help an elderly person use a computer, caring for a sick pet, taking something apart and lesrning how its built. I could on but hopefully you get the idea. Forget about the word "passion". Listen to the subtle shifts of energy inside you and let those guide you. If you are good at something, chances are you like it, so start there.
You spoke to what's been holding my back for about a year! the fact that holistic wellness and essential oils are everywhere makes me hesitate to begin the blog.....I had a page on FB and geesh didn't go very well

Trinity, it's good to narrow it down when creating products and other information to sell, but you should still cast a wider net when it comes to traffic. For example, on our health and wellness blog, we write articles about many different topics like exercise, diet, weight loss, yoga, and overall healthy living and food. BUT our products are specifically in weight loss and yoga, and we create the most content about those topics.
I really like your videos, they are very informative! Like you said, knowing your niche is something you cannot keep quiet about. So true. I know my niche and just need help implementing it through blogging! Just finding how to start is my problem!
Alex, I like how you showed both sides of the argument. Sometimes we get so tunnel vision that we can lose perspective and sight of the things that are not ROI. Awesome tips, I am still in the planning phase. I want to dip my toe in the “creating an online business” and everything that I have researched about scares me. This was super helpful!!! I’ve been looking for some guidance with starting my blog so I’m so excited that I came across your channel! The only problem for me is that my passions don’t really fall under the same umbrella :( and that’s where I’m stuck. how do I narrow down what my sub-topics will be? (starting off at least.. I know like you mentioned they’ll be narrowed down after figuring out what people are interested in) - I’m just trying to first figure out how it’ll connect with my main blog topic. For instance, some of my passions are: woodworking, cooking, DIY, gardening, sunless tanning, home organization, my frenchie pups, traveling, and the list goes on and on. And then I get random ideas that I want to write about or do a video tutorial about but prob wouldn’t fit into my sub-categories. I’m certainly not an expert on all mentioned above, but love doing them all a little here and there and would love to share my ideas... just trying to figure out how to organize it all into one topic!? (I don’t know if you’ve already answered this question or not, but any advice or link to a video that covers this would be SO HELPFUL!!!!) I look forward to watching more of your videos once I get over this little obstacle, ha!! :) thanks again!!!

Nobody is born is with a passion! for as long as I can remember, since at least 4, I have loved people being free with great passion, love freedom for myself and other people. With a strong belief that deepest freedom is internal. I love nothing more than to see people alleviate themselves of their emotional/psychological burdens and fetters.
I am actually writing an article on medium about this idea of "changing your mindset for success" and "changing your mindset through hard work and actions"

You honestly are the first blog I really enjoy, you are so honest, straight forward, no bull shit, authentic. Love you, I do hope to learn from you because as I stated before I am a cancer survivor and also have type two diabetes and have read through proper eating I can get rid of insulin and metforman. Two things that still tie me to my doctor. I really want to be totally free of doctors and their drugs that they push on a person. I do not like their god complex. Also I want to drink a healthy green drink without it costing me
50 or 60 a month. Right now I have a very low budget to work with, my rent costs me half of my income, the other half goes to food and necessary things with nothing left for growth or savings.

I'm a college career counselor and I always tell students to not follow your passion, follow your interests. You need experience to develop passion just as you stated. So you're absolutely correct. The problem is that many people spend so much time trying to find their passion that they don't do anything. They get stuck. It may sound like a cliche, but we all have our nature. If you just pay attention to how you feel from moment to moment when you do something you'll find that some things turn you on and some things turn you off and lots of things will be neutral. The difference is can be very subtle at times, once you tune into it you'll find that certain things give you more energy and others don't. It's like following breadcrumbs. Some examples: feeling satifaction when you help an elderly person use a computer, caring for a sick pet, taking something apart and lesrning how its built. I could on but hopefully you get the idea. Forget about the word "passion". Listen to the subtle shifts of energy inside you and let those guide you. If you are good at something, chances are you like it, so start there.

Love this video, thank you! I wanted a broader topic and to have subtopics related to my main topic but a lot of bloggers kept saying to narrow down the niche but here you explain to do it the way I was hoping to. So glad that you have experience with it working wonderfully!
Trinity, it's good to narrow it down when creating products and other information to sell, but you should still cast a wider net when it comes to traffic. For example, on our health and wellness blog, we write articles about many different topics like exercise, diet, weight loss, yoga, and overall healthy living and food. BUT our products are specifically in weight loss and yoga, and we create the most content about those topics.
I really like your videos, they are very informative! Like you said, knowing your niche is something you cannot keep quiet about. So true. I know my niche and just need help implementing it through blogging! Just finding how to start is my problem!
Alex, I like how you showed both sides of the argument. Sometimes we get so tunnel vision that we can lose perspective and sight of the things that are not ROI. I have been wondering what a good number for subtopics is so this information was helpful as well. Lastly, I totally agree with the that finding your niche is important. Keep it up!

I’ve been thinking about how I can support my self that I won’t have to outside my home anymore. My mom has dementia and will have to help take care of her so this Blogging thing sounds promising. Awesome tips, I am still in the planning phase. I want to dip my toe in the “creating an online business” and everything that I have researched about scares me. Even the thought of creating a blog and having to write about something makes me nervous. Specially because my first language is Spanish. But I think creating a blog in English, rather than in Spanish will be more succesful. This was super helpful!!! I’ve been looking for some guidance with starting my blog so I’m so excited that I came across your channel!
The only problem for me is that my passions don’t really fall under the same umbrella :( and that’s where I’m stuck. how do I narrow down what my sub-topics will be? (starting off at least.. I know like you mentioned they’ll be narrowed down after figuring out what people are interested in) - I’m just trying to first figure out how it’ll connect with my main blog topic. For instance, some of my passions are: woodworking, cooking, DIY, gardening, sunless tanning, home organization, my frenchie pups, traveling, and the list goes on and on. And then I get random ideas that I want to write about or do a video tutorial about but prob wouldn’t fit into my sub-categories. I’m certainly not an expert on all mentioned above, but love doing them all a little here and there and would love to share my ideas... just trying to figure out how to organize it all into one topic!? (I don’t know if you’ve already answered this question or not, but any advice or link to a video that covers this would be SO HELPFUL!!!!)
