In this paper I will be reviewing and close reading Astronaut In the Ocean by Masked Wolf. “What you know about rolling down in the deep? When your brain goes numb, you can call that mental freeze When these people talk too much, put that shit in slow motion, yeah I feel like an astronaut in the ocean, ay” The song begins with a rhetorical question asking the listener what they know about rolling down in the deep. This is done in order to put the listener in the shoes of the writer, not allowing them to criticize Masked Wolf without actually understanding what he is going through. The allegorical depth being talked about here is about, perhaps a mental state, of being unwell, and the act of rolling symbolizes a familiarity to this condition by the writer. Masked Wolf is not sinking down to the deep, neither is he surprised by the fact that he is in the deep. He is simply rolling, meaning he, even though he might not enjoy it, is basking in the glory of the deep. He rolls in the deep, rejecting to reject the undesirable state that he is in. This state of not being well, or not being in the place that he wants to be, might put one in what Masked Wolf calls a numbness of the brain. Masked Wolf, furthering literature, informs the listener that they might also call this a “mental freeze”. Giving the listener options as to what they might call this strange phenomena. This is EXPERTLY placed, as if your brain is slowed down (as is the case when one is rolling down in the deep) you might have problems understanding things. So he states this fact two times, in order to assure the listeners understanding of the situation. As he experiences this mental retardation, he puts people in “slow motion” as to level his understanding of the inputs given to him by the people with the inputs themselves. Masked Wolf has the power to do this ,this is important, to put people in slow motion and I will get to that later. This is obviously due to the fact that he is in a state of “mental freeze”, he needs to slow people down so he might understand them. The title of the song and the next line diverges from the first three and explains to the listener how Masked Wolf is feeling. An astronaut ,obviously, belongs to space, yet here he is in the ocean. This feeling of not being in the place that he is supposed to be is juxtaposed by the fact that an astronaut, with a suit, has a higher chance of surviving the pressure exerted by the water above him, as he is in the deep. So he walks this fine line of not being where he wants to be, or being in a place that he should not be, yet he also manages to survive in this harsh condition. “She say that I'm cool, I'm like yeah, that's true I believe in G-O-D, don't believe in T-H-O-T She keep playing me dumb I'ma play her for fun” Here, Masked Wolf is talking about an unnamed female figure, potentially a “thot” as he calls her. The “thot” acknowledges Masked Wolf’s state of coolness and expresses this idea to him. He responds by saying that this is nothing new to him. He is aware of his own perfectness. This perfectly fits in with his next line where he talks about believing in God. God in this sense, is not the God we are accustomed to. When Masked Wolf talks about God, he is simply talking about himself. Exclaiming that he only believes in himself and not anyone else. He is God. He “plays people for fun” and can “put that shit [people] in slow motion” he has the power to do so, and he will. A mere mortal surely could not comprehend the thoughts of God therefore he stencils it, giving us the divine knowledge by reflecting it, creating things in his own image. The stencil here is the projection of real world, projected through the divine intellect of God. The third and fourth line Masked Wolf talks about the time before the flood. In Christian literature Lord God floods the entire earth, as he thinks it is filled with pain, misery and sin. These obviously do not discomfort God, as he is above the physical realm, (my mode was kinda lounge) He, JUST AS THE GOD IN GENESIS is in a state of unsureness. He does not know which way to turn. He regrets creating humans, yet he is conflicted, and uses Noah to further humanity without wiping all of them. “Flow was cool but I still felt burnt Energy up, you can feel my surge I'ma kill everything like this purge Let's just get this straight for a second, I'ma work” Flow was cool, like the flows of cool waters that rained down unto earth when he bestowed flood upon earth. The waters SURGED all over the earth. When he “kills everything like this purge” he is obviously referring to the great flood. He has WORKED. He did something, after creating humans, the flood is the last direct things Lord God does for earth, after not being present for a long time. “Even if I don't get paid for progression, I'ma get it Everything that I do is electric I'ma keep it inner motion, keep it movin' like kinetic, ay” Put this shit in a frame but I know I don't blame” Lord God does not get paid to do what he does, he simply does it. He is electric ,in a sense that he controls electric as he does everything and as early humans explained lightnings by an act of God. He keeps it in inner motion and keeps it moving, as without the first cause of God, nothing would ever move (Augustine).
