1:00 The young man next to Generalleutnant Dittmar is actually his son Berend Dittmar, they surrendered together at Magdeburg on April 25th 1945 to the men of the 30th Infantry Division. It is told that General Dittmar had traveled across the Elbe by raft with his son and two Majors: Major Pluskat and Major Werner to ask for assistance in evacuating injured German soldiers and civilians from the east bank of the Elbe. U.S. Major General Leland Hobbs refused and Dittmar and his staff was captured.

The unusual candor of the Pathé announcer reveals how deeply felt was British antipathy towards their aggressors. England suffered the blows and rightly had a need to exhale some broadsides at the German high command. It's refreshing to hear the usually reserved equanimity of that period’s newsreel report refer to Göring as a "fat thug," or mock Field Marshal von Rundstedt with, “Look at that face. But it is sobering to remember - the Bomb was not developed for use against Japan.
We would have used it on Germany if we had had to. Luckily, we did not have to.

@@hoodatdondar2664in that aspect Germany had a lucky escape. Those Wehraboo who fantasise about the various new weapons Germany was building towards the end forget about this fact as it doesn't suit their agenda
