I've been growing and selling Java Ferns for 8 years now and have found the best way to plant them is to put the bottom of the stem in the gravel, and the end of it sticking out of the gravel. Still in my experience they grow no better or worse if they're in the substrate or not

Hi Cory. Thanks to you, I became a plant lover. When I started my tank, and after a while put plants in it, my plan was to have a tank to use as a plant keeper and as fish quarantine before I put it in my main tank, a far more bigger on, the "quarantine" tank is about 20 USG. I put fancy guppies in there, mainly to get a cycle going. The plants I bought was a nice fit for my larger aquarium. And everything was great until I decided to not get a larger tank. Some of the plants are fast growing, don't get these if you're not in to trimming like crazy. The tank looks like a fantastic jungle, the guppies are thriving, but after a while you get overwhelmed - and your plants want light, so they compete about the light, so the tank gets darker and darker. Get slow growing plants, like anubias and such. My plants are doing too well, including the red and purple ones

I've set up my first tank with plants just recently. I've really been enjoying the Ozelot Sword that I have in there. It's about 8 inches now, but the slight variation in the colors of the leaves is the seller for me.

Surprised to not see any anubias on the list, but great list! Sadly I pretty much have killed some susswasertang. It might not have been all dead but it was mostly, I had a bad BBA outbreak.
Me as well. I am just getting started and if I can grow it, anyone can grow it. Glued it to an abalone shell and it is pushing out new leaves! Surprised me!
I had Java Ferns in a tank many years ago, and had them planted right down in the substrate. Had no problems at all with it. I originally planted three that sent off runners that eventually took over one end of the tank. Never had any problems with it dying. I used an iron based rock and sand as my substrate, and had no issues of any kind with plants. The only plant I ever had an issue with, was wysteria. The stuff very nearly took over the entire tank. To say that it grew like a weed would be an understatement. Even after I took it out, there would be little bits that I would find growing again a few weeks later. Took me three months to finally get rid of it. I can't remember what the other plants were, but all of them grew to epic proportions while I had the tank, especially the Java Ferns. I eventually gave the tank to someone else when I moved, mostly because it was too big to really transport across three states in a little car, but as far as I'm aware, that guy still has it, and still keeps fish in it.

root tabs aren't necessary but they sure do help. I haven't used root tabs for about a year and all my plants are growing fine. Their growth rate though, is like 5 times slower
this is a great video. was searching around for just this info and there is nothing out there with this much great info in a high quality video - thank you
Thanks for this video! I literally just found susswasertang in my tank. It must have snuck in ages ago with the java moss I had bought. I had two balls of it attached to teh spray bar of my canister filter.
Just came across your vids and think there great. I got out of the hobby years ago and now that I have room for 50 or more tanks so I'm goin gun ho and still learning new stuff from guys like u!! Thanks.
I ordered a plant bundle that has 10 “easy freshwater aquarium plants” but it’s a mystery bundle so I’m taking notes of every plant so when I get them I know exactly what to do. I’m working on my first ever planted aquarium 40gal community tank. I currently have hornwort, Anubias on my drift wood, Java fern on the drift wood and rocks and I know hornwort can just float but when I ordered it, it was very tall so I’m going to use it towards the back also considering it’s a fast growing plant.
Ordered plant from ya twice hoping I would get a "pest snail" I dont see any but the plants are doing amazing! Especially with that Easy Green fertilizer
This is really informative I've checked away a few aquarium plants because I just thought that they died I didn't realize that they could grow back. Or they could be rescued with a bit of maintenance. Thank you so much
Thanks to Cory I have planted my first aquarium! I wasn't a fan of the Christmas Moss or the Bicopa so I removed them. They just didn't look good in my tank, but will certainly work for others. I now have Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green, Cryptocoryne Albida, Limnophilia Sessiliflora, Vallisneria Spiralis and Ludwigia Palustris. I love the greens, browns and reds in my tank. I thought all easy plants were green but that isnt the case. I am so happy with my "easy" plants that I will never go for plastic plants again! Thanks Cory for all your videos 😊
I didn't get this one from you guys, but I have a Water Sprite that I'm absolutely loving. It's been super happy since I bought a newer (better) light, but was doing decently (but slow) even under a kit light. Now, with a much better light, it's running wild and my shrimp absolutely adore it. I'm probably going to make some cuttings of it over this weekend to branch it out into different spots. The Dwarf Sag that I got from you is doing great in the corner as well. :)
I needed this video omg...i bought monte carlo and scarlet temple from your store (without researching) and killed both. Then I killed my java fern because I planted it in the substrate. I have a black thumb. Thanks for the including the planted tank playlist for us newbies! Very helpful video, thanks Cory!
Amubias is also a very beginner friendly plant. Kind of like Java fern you need to keep the ryzome outside of the substrate and tie it on a rock or piece of driftwood. I have two ryzome on a fake driftwood that I bought at the fish store. They are doing amazing and have also flowered.
was just searching for fish stores near me a few hours ago and aquarium co-op came up, now i’m seeing on youtube! i’m in seattle, i’ll have to come out sometime
2 other plants that I personally found pretty tough for beginners in low tech tank are Val and water sprite (need a fit of bright light and let it float on top).
My Java Moss has done well planted in the gravel! Smaller bunches don't fair as well initially, but after browning, they have thrived! It actually grabs hold of the gravel itself! Root tabs are definitely used as well as water column dosing!
I bought baby tears plants (not the dwarf) from you and its doing pretty well in my basic 10 gal aqueon starter kit tank :) Looks like an overgrown jungle now haha The fertilizer you sell helps a LOT too thank you 🙏🏻
Hi cory I’m knew to the plant world I love these kind of videos please keep doing videos like this please. Also I get my plants from you guys and I also have my first bottle of easy green.
I got an amazon sword back in june when I took possession of the family goldfish. The goldfish died back in August, and I stopped paying attention to the aquarium, and now (October) I am getting it ready for new fish again. The sword is still alive, tons of new little leaves :) excited to watch it grow now that I'm giving it root tabs and getting some fish back in there. Hopefully it will have friends soon too.
At 11:12 - 11:19 what's the species of that snail that's on the leaf at the middle-top of the screen? I have a teeny tiny baby hitchhiker that looks pretty similar but I haven't been able to 100% identify it. Best I've come up with so far is a Brown Leopard Spotted Ramshorn.
I can attest that amazon swords are pretty amazing. Mine have grown really well to the point where they are sticking out of the water or due to the filter flow they create a small refuge for my albino bristlenoses that aren’t big fans of the light.
My crypto I bought from you was this little potted thing and it has blossomed into a monster! Perfect for ADF. The co-op capsules have done wonders for it.
Literally just bought Java Fern about a week ago.... Had it stuck in gravel!! Thank you for your useful information! Hopefully it's not to late to save my ferns!
I’m pretty new to this all and this video was great to know which plants I should buy from here on out, the care, and how to plant them, but out of all the plants I have so far (and I have at least half) my banana plant has had the best growth out of everything I have have in all 3 of my tanks
I've recently bought a ball of loose java moss, how would I attach that to wood. Like how yours looks contained in this video. We haven't added it yet because we are worried it will over crowd and spread. We have a 10 gallon tank & are beginners, I also have 1 pleco & snail. Along with our other fish.
I just want to say thank you for your awesome videos! I LOVE this stuff.I love learning about aquariums are the information you give is wonderful! Thank you for doing this for newbies :)
Love this list! I think almost all the plants I’ve gotten were grown emerged. Most of them are finally taking off! One of the first plants I got was water wisteria. It really didn’t seem like the stems were going to make it but I never toss a plant unless it’s gone mushy. Now I have a tall wisteria forest! It’s doing the best by far. A stem plant I think is Ludwigia is doing pretty well too. Most of my swords are finally coming back after completely melting. The java moss, windelov fern, and anubius are tugging along although they’re plagued by a light covering of soft green algae. I accidentally barbered most of the lace on the windelov trying to rub the algae off 😬 In my QT tank I’m clearing some hornwort which is growing like mad despite having only west facing window light! I’ve also got cabomba in there which came by accident when I ordered hornwort the first time. Does great in the QT tank when the light on it but it just melts in my display tank so I’m not sure what to do with it. Above water I’ve got pothos and gold ribbon bamboo growing like mad. The only things that seem like they’re going to die out is frogbit, funny enough, and another stem plant that seems like ludwigia but is definitely different than the others I have. I have a fertilizer regiment but no CO2. I’ve got a plant growing bulb and a small LED. Nothing too fancy. Hoping for a stingray maybe for my birthday 😏 although the fluval 3.0 would be killer! I’m loving plants just as much as fish!! Can’t imagine the tank without them!
Oh and I have dwarf hair grass that was starting to carpet until I moved it to a different tank and a Marino moss ball that fell apart! I don’t know what causes moss balls to fall apart but I’ve set it on driftwood like a mat and it’s till dark green so there’s that... very strange
Hi im still new to taking care of fish~ i was wondering, i have a gravel base. Which plants would you recommend for me to grow? Also, if i do keep plants, how would this change the way i clean the tank (gravel vacs etc.)

How often do I put food tabs in the plants?? The sword plant not included (I know they need a lot) but every other plant, is it like once a week?? Or like once a month?
I originally got into Aquariums for fish. Only had fish for for my first 7yrs in the hobby. But since I started getting plants 1yr ago. I think I like my plants more than my fish at this point lol

👍 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
root tabs aren't necessary but they sure do help. I haven't used root tabs for about a year and all my plants are growing fine. Their growth rate though, is like 5 times slower
Getting into plants now. This vid got me hyped!
this is a great video. was searching around for just this info and there is nothing out there with this much great info in a high quality video - thank you
Just placed an order. Already got my shipping notification 😁 order in 430pm (CST)and shipped 455pm (CST) 🤯
They are crazy fast. I live in Washington and if I order at about 10am I get it the next day.
I live in Texas, I ordered on Saturday and got my order on Tuesday!
Plant are very important for everyone,, thanks for upload the video
i love your videos! i have learned so much from you and i appreciate all your content :)
I really appreciate how you didn't take long to get into the plants, thanks!!!!
I got some when I bought fish at local pet store I asked and they gave me a few now I have a lot I like them
I thought I was the only one that actually wants “pest snails”
This is really informative I've checked away a few aquarium plants because I just thought that they died I didn't realize that they could grow back. Or they could be rescued with a bit of maintenance. Thank you so much
Great list of plants! But… Marimo moss balls carry invasive zebra mussels… I destroyed mine lol
I thought to myself, if he's taken the time and listed all the plants in the description: I'll sub. Guess what?! 👏👏 Yay!! Thank you!🇬🇧
Amubias is also a very beginner friendly plant.
Cory!!!! We love you in the 802 man!!!! Thank you for all the info you share. You saved me so much.
2 other plants that I personally found pretty tough for beginners in low tech tank are Val and water sprite (need a fit of bright light and let it float on top).
Watched for the first time, “they gotta eat back then, they gotta eat now.” got a good laugh. 😂🇨🇦
Thanks for the advice!
I love how you got right to the video!! Keep it up, thanks for the help!
Recently got back into the hobby after being away for a while. This was really helpful!
My Java Moss has done well planted in the gravel! Smaller bunches don't fair as well initially, but after browning, they have thrived! It actually grabs hold of the gravel itself! Root tabs are definitely used as well as water column dosing!
Love your sharing . Thank you.
Thank You. Very nice tips for my planted. :)
Love your plant videos!
always awesome content saludos desde :) Costa Rica
I bought baby tears plants (not the dwarf) from you and its doing pretty well in my basic 10 gal aqueon starter kit tank :) Looks like an overgrown jungle now haha
The fertilizer you sell helps a LOT too thank you 🙏🏻
Hi cory I’m knew to the plant world I love these kind of videos please keep doing videos like this please.
Thank you very much I am so greateful. I couldn't have made my tan pretiier without your help!
Cool, I've got my plant shopping list for the next fish auction! :)
This is one of best vids on TH-cam, info is so gd and fast to the point. DO MORE OF THESE please lol
Awesome video! Thank you.
Mine have grown really well to the point where they are sticking out of the water or due to the filter flow they create a small refuge for my albino bristlenoses that aren’t big fans of the light.
nice video, the info on how they grow/die back was invaluable. tks
I absolutely love your videos 👍
My crypto I bought from you was this little potted thing and it has blossomed into a monster! Perfect for ADF. The co-op capsules have done wonders for it.
Literally just bought Java Fern about a week ago.... Had it stuck in gravel!! Thank you for your useful information! Hopefully it's not to late to save my ferns!
genuine question. what’s up with ur fangs r those natural?? kinda cool lol
I’m pretty new to this all and this video was great to know which plants I should buy from here on out, the care, and how to plant them, but out of all the plants I have so far (and I have at least half) my banana plant has had the best growth out of everything I have have in all 3 of my tanks
Thanks for the video mqn i just bought a baby arrowana and i wanted to add live plants verry informative!
Love this, I'm getting in to planted tanks now.
I just want to say thank you for your awesome videos! I LOVE this stuff.I love learning about aquariums are the information you give is wonderful! Thank you for doing this for newbies :)
Thanks a bunch Cory!
I love this video so much! Thank you for not only giving a list but all of the info along with them, super helpful!!
I love this. Could you do a "going green" video? I respect that you talk here and there about being as eco-friendly as possible. I would love to have a succinct video of you giving your best tips to convert a semi-beginner/intermediate tank to one that is more environmentally conscious. Thanks!
How often do I put food tabs in the plants?? The sword plant not included (I know they need a lot) but every other plant, is it like once a week?? Or like once a month?
Great list! This includes lots of plants not commonly on the 'easiest plants ' lists. Thanks!
I originally got into Aquariums for fish. Only had fish for for my first 7yrs in the hobby. But since I started getting plants 1yr ago. I think I like my plants more than my fish at this point lol
Good video, Cory!
Nice one mate, thanks!
Thank you a very helpful information. Its hard to find these .
