More please! Your breakdown of how each parameter affects the sound, pitch and timbre, really expanded my understanding of how many audio effects work! Not to mention how much awesome sound design you can accomplish with the warp mode and automation. Can't wait for your next installment!
PLEASE give us part 2. I feel like this is something I could've stumbled into on my own, but having someone explain the intricacies is so valuable for actually learning how things work. Even though I'm not "new" to Ableton there's new things to learn every day. This video was awesome, cheers.
something I love doing is taking one of my older songs and throwing the final export into a new project in Live. Turn on warp texture mode, setting the grain size to around 20 -30 and the flux to zero. Then stretch it as far as it can go. Consolidate. Then set that new sample to a different warp mode and squish it as small as it can go. consolidate. then stretch it again. consolidate. then squish. and just keep repeating that. I call it kneading the song to extract a butt load of new textures and samples. Depending on what your original song sounded like you can even get some nice bass drones to use as a base atmosphere for an ambient track.
Excellent video on Warp Modes. The way you break things down from a broad concept and work in all the small details is amazing. I learned so much. The overall presentation and everything was also a 10/10. Immediately subscribed to your channel. And, YES, do a Part 2!!
Been making beats in Ableton for years now and this is the first video that really got these warping types to sink into my thick skull! Thanks my man, Killin it as always ♥️🔥
I've been using ableton for a couple years and never fully understood these modes until now. Thank you for being so inquisitive and exhaustive in your study, and for sharing all your little gems of knowledge so clearly with us. ✌️❤
Looks like you're already on top of more videos, so I'll just say thank you very much for breaking this down! The tutorial was easy to follow and I learned quite a lot. I'd definitely love to see more of this kind of content, especially since your way of explaining and teaching sits in that nice medium between not being too long-winded and not being too concise to the point of vague explanations.
Informative video! I got a lot out of it. One thing I like doing in beats mode is taking a beat loop that is a bit too busy, setting it to forward only and preserving 16th notes while reducing the transient amount down from 100 to half or even lower. You can use that as a layering tool to make generic beats way more interesting while keeping the rhythm tight!
In case it helps, here's how I think about formants: The sound of your voice starts from vocal cords, which vibrate at the pitch that you're singing. That sound then goes through your throat and mouth which emphasizes certain frequencies. Those are the formants. It's like the shape of your mouth is an EQ applied to your vocal cords. We humans are very good at discerning these two things from each other, which is how we can recognize someone's unique voice even when they speak or sing at many different pitches. If you simply pitch shift an entire vocal sample without compensating the formants, it sounds like both the vocal cords and the shape of the head have changed. The latter, which causes the chipmunk effect, makes it sound like a *different person* singing. If you want to change the pitch of a vocal sample but have it still sound like the same person, you need to adjust the formants back. That way the vocal cord pitch changes, but the EQ effects of the throat, head, and mouth on the sound still emphasizing the original frequencies. (And conversely, if you change just the formants and not the pitch, it sounds like a different person singing the same notes.)
Great demos! I love messing up guitars (before the amp) with texture mode. I actually haven't tried the beats mode for glitchy fills, I'll have to give it a go 🤔
This video (like all of your other videos) is amazing. I teach Ableton Live to High School musicians and the warp modes can confuse them so I’m directing them to this brilliant explanation as back up! Awesome stuff - thank you!
Great stuff man. I've pretty much just used complex pro to slow stuff down that I'm trying to learn to play on guitar. The other modes were always fun to play around with but I never bothered to learn what they are actually doing. Thanks for all you do!
I’ve been using these for a while, but never quite understood the ins and outs for each one. I would love some more information/tips on the weird particulars of them. Great stuff as always!
I love the break ideas you had at the end of the video. I'll definitely be trying that out. Reminds me of some of the stuff I do with data bender or morphagene. I would love to see more stuff
Hey...I see you mentioned Data Bender and Morphagene....do you use these two modules 'together'? I ask because I'm looking at adding some 'sampling/mangling' to my modular setup and these two together looked like they could accomplish alot.
@@JB61264 I'm sorry for the length of this, I just want to be thorough. So yes, I do actually. Morphagene is pretty weird to get used to though, It was my first module I got several years ago and I still have a print out of the button controls next to my system. So look out for that. But the way it mangles audio is my favorite. I don't typically send audio thru it, I pre-load stuff into the sd card then send that to my effect modules. I've been wanting to get a DAW like Reaper so I can add in splice points before I put the files on the sd card cause adding them while morphagene is playing them is tricky because you have to be on time. I'm not the best with timing so I don't usually record into it. So that's a me thing. But when everything is all loaded up I'll just play with the knobs of morphagene by hand. It's really fun when you have it clocked, you can get some interesting sounds out of it. And when it comes to data bender. That thing is just really fun if you like glitchy stuff and some interesting distortion. The bend parameter does resemble morphagene, especially when you're in the second mode, but you don't have as much control as you do with morphagene. which is fine for me, that's why I've kept it. So to get to the point, I think the two of them together has been great for my system. Especially if you have some reverb and/or delay in the mix. If i'm using morhpagene as the sound source, the signal path is usually, Morph>Modulated Reverb or Delay>Data Bender>Slight Delay or Reverb.
@@doiob.videos Thanks for the reply...I'm looking for something that I could record to in real time and then do some looping/mangling as well to blend in...I've also heard Squid Salmple might be something to look at as well as 4MS DLD module.
@@JB61264 Well morphagene can record in real time. I just haven't messed with it too much yet, so I can't say how well that aspect of it performs. But the squid and DLD seem a bit cheaper and more straight forward and less likely to make wacky stuff unintentionally like the morphagene tends to do. So whatever you think will best fit within your system is probably the better move.
This is great! I've been trying to work with ableton at home and every time I open it up I feel like a baby with power tools. I can't begin to understand how to use them to make a birdhouse let alone a shed.
Would be interesting to see more, I actually didn't know you could automate warp modes nor have I ever thought of using them to play around with audio, I thought they were utility use only.
Is Push/Push 2 good for quick, hands on experimenting with warp modes on regular audio tracks, or would you have to load the audio into Simpler to access the warp engine from Push?
Thanks for this. Is it worth laying out for Ableton live only for complex pro warp? I'm perfectly happy in my Reaper environment but have been chasing natural sounding repitching since Frank Ocean.
"What's the best....?" is a terrible question, considering there are many ways to do things. I recommend to watch this video again and ask yourself: which track is kinda similar to a bongo track? It's pretty simple actually.
how does one enlarge the sound wave on arrangement mode....I can hardly see mine in the arrangement mode....is there an enlarge command etc.....? thank you.

This is a great idea
I once built an fx chain in reaper that basically does this in real time with several pairs of pitch shifters in series.
HI Jeremy, this was great! I've owned Ableton for as long as I can remember and finally understand warp modes. More would be very welcome.

There is a part 2!
Would absolutely love seeing a part 2.... thank you so much for this. I'm a bit overwhelmed but this will open up a whole new world for me.

Wasn’t expecting the creative uses of warp mode! Thanks for sharing, really cool stuff. Looking forward to more!
This is amazing, I've never really understood how to warp tracks in ableton, and the fills ideas are so cool. Thanks!
Yip, part 2 please! Been using ableton for 15+ years and that's the best explanation I've seen, and long samples can be a nightmare! Respect! 🙏
the things i want to learn about are constantly lining up with your video releases and i can't thank you enough for doing what you do!
This is the best tutorial for warp modes I have ever seen
droppin' "qualia" like it's everyday parlance. love it!
It's such a great word
always down for more ableton tips. warping is super fun, so it's nice to have a little more detail on why it does the things it does!
Just bought an op1 and can t express how much your vidéos helped me ; thanks a lot for this tuto aswell best regards from France

This is so in depth, concise, and so well explained. Thank you!
Best explanation on TH-cam!!!

Nice work Jeremy, love the fill effects idea using warping. Yes to part 2, and more Ableton tuts in general 👍
Whoa, I thought I've read the manual all over, but it turns out I don't know nothing about Warp!
Thanks Jeremy!
Omg thank you! The warping feature has mystified me for so long. This helps so much.
im very interested in a second video. Love your work!!!
This was dope. Def interested in the 2nd vid.
This was great. Am looking forward to the next one!
I’m pretty well aware of this stuff but watched the whole video anyways. You always have a great way of explaining things
This was amazing, thank you so much!! I really want that second video on this subject, please :)
Fantastic video- definitely would love a series on this!!!!
Definitely interested in part two.
Thanks for this. Super helpful video! Casting a vote for vid #2 on long sample warping and quantization/groove.
Thanks, Jeremy. This video saved me hours and hours of frustration.
Pretty cool knowledge bits. Love you and happy new year

Great stuff as always, didn't know you could automate those paramters! Would love to see a video about warping of longer tracks!
Thanks! Very cool. Bring on part two!
Awesome! Definitely wanna see more!
Started learning ableton recently, cery helpful! Thank you!
Very cool! Thanks for this, I hope you do make more like this.
Love the thumbnail
Super helpful! Great vid as always.

so good! I just got ableton and now I understand at least one part of it
Would love more of these. Especially if you can do a video on simpler and sampler
incredibly informative video! hasreally helped with me understanding sampling in ableton!!! :)
Great stuff, thanks Jeremy.
Would love a second video.
I’m absolutely hooked with your channel right now !
Where can I find all of your production tutorials, is there a playlist somewhere?
Yeah my education playlist!
@@RedMeansRecording hey! Thanks! I made my first weird glitchy ambient track with warping my old jams with my friend today!
Thanks for all the tips 🥰

Thank you very much. This helped out a lot.
Yep. Second video is a must bud 😁
Thank you so much for this
Something not mentioned (or I missed it). You can quantize audio when in beats mode!
me explaining warp modes:
- grindy (beats)
- wonky (tones)
- freaky (texture)
- hilarious (re-pitch)
- sneaky (complex)
- sneaky Pro (complex pro)
Hey true
Would be interesting to see more, I actually didn't know you could automate warp modes nor have I ever thought of using them to play around with audio, I thought they were utility use only.
Yes please! Great explanation!
thanks for the tip !
I’d like to see the second video. Will it feature the cat on a roomba again? Asking for a friend.
I'd love a follow up video!
yes please to second video!
THANK YOU
yes!! second part!!
Part 2, please.
Bloody love yourr educational stuff!!

Have been using Live from V6, and when it comes to warping I'm the Dizzy Cat. Well until now, cheers!

I stopped paying attention when the cat started spinning.
please sir, may I have some more?
Automating the grain size sounds a bit like something False Noise does on some of their tracks
2nd vid would be very interesting! warrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp!
anyone knows how to do the beat warp in fl studio or anything similar?
