Hi Ryan- I am actually working on a video I have yet to finish about my Skutt wheel. First and foremost, I have to say I have never tried a Soldner, so I can't offer a true comparison. I can at lease give you a review of my Skutt though!! My first wheel I had for over 25 years before I sold it was a motorized Thomas Stuart Kickwheel. Loved it- it was a great workhorse- but way too noisy for my videos. When I started researching new wheels, I discovered that Skutt bought out the Thomas Stuart company a while back, and thought I would look at their products. I am so glad I did!! The Skutt Steven Hill one is similar to mine, but I just didn't get the one with quite as much horsepower, as I felt that would be overkill for me. I have the classic, which has 1/3 hp motor- I believe the Steven Hill is 1/2 hp. I don't ever really have the desire to go beyond 25 lbs for any piece, so I felt it was plenty enough for me. Things I LOVE and I feel changed my life when I got this wheel: #1 I LOVE the legs extensions for standing. What a game changer. I absolutely LOVE this. I never knew just how much I would love standing- but I do! It's silly, but every time I use my wheel, I think, "Gosh, this is an amazing wheel"! Lol! I know one thing I was concerned about prior to getting it was wondering if it would feel sturdy. It is amazing. It's heft really makes it feel sturdy. (It makes my lightweight Pacifica seem like a toy now) #2 I LOVE how the entire unit is a built in splashpan and not a removable splashpan. I love not taking off splashpans and bringing to my sink. I don't throw with a bunch of water anyway- so my clean up is not that extensive. If I used a ton of water, I may prefer a removable pan. #3 The smoothness of the pedal/wheel responsiveness is fantastic. And, it purrs. ;) (I love shooting videos with it, as it is so quiet). #4. The removable wheel head. LOVE this!!! It makes clean up a breeze, that, and I also just like to take it off to clean every bit of clay underneath. (Especially nice like when yesterday, I was throwing some red clay.). Did it ever once occur to me before I got the wheel that it would be nice to be able to remove the wheel head so easily? Nah... but boy do I love it now!! #5 I got the wheel head extension as well, which is perfect for huge platter bats or a Giffin Grip with a wooden platter extension- which without the wheel head extension would run into the walls of the built in pan. It is a simple solution to lift the wheel head a bit more. As an aside, the height is just perfect for when I am not throwing, I just place a big ware board on top , and it doubles as a convenient height for a standing worktable. (Like when I want to handle cups and such) I'll try to get my video review of the wheel and the set up of it posted soon- and I'll come back and post it here! So, in a nutshell, I am a giant fan of the Skutt, and wouldn't hesitate to have an entire studio of them if it were in a budget to do so. :) I have some 25+ year old Pacificas at school that I would love to replace with these someday! How long have you had your wheel now? I’ve heard another potter review their wheel after a year and had a slight complaint that it’s too loud for them. Though I think that’s just a personal preference on her side, although it makes me wonder if the wheel will get louder in time or not. In the videos I’ve seen you use it, it didn’t really seem to be an issue. I’ve mainly been throwing on Brent and Shimpo wheels. The issues I’ve had with Brent wheels are that it doesn’t seem to transition smoothly between the speeds, Jittery at low speeds (if you can call it a low speed), and tend to revolve on its own at times. I loved the Shimpo wheel for its slow speeds and smooth even transitions. Though it lacked the torque that I like. Can your wheel go pretty slow and has a smooth transition between speeds? Any issues like I’ve had with the Brent wheels? I understand that you do production work, which makes that huge splash pen and asset. I’m still pretty new(Two years in) and haven’t found my clay body of choice so clean up between the different clays I use in one session might be a little disconcerting for me. Otherwise, this is really a tempting option for me. I’m glad that you get so much joy from working alongside it. Though I’m still in a debate with myself you’ve given me A lot to think about.
