From Wikipedia: How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on an original Swedish hymn entitled "O Store Gud" written in 1885 by Carl Boberg (1859-1940). The English version of the hymn and its title are a loose translation by the English missionary Stuart K. Hine from 1949.
When people are talking about the greatest voices in all of music, you can't overlook Carrie Underwood. Her range, her tone, her power, and her breath control are beyond unbelievable. You definitely need to react to ALOT more from her!! She's truly a God gifted talent! 😇❤️
This hymn was my grandfather's favorite and was played at his funeral. How Great Thou Art was written before Vince Gill was born. I know this song word for word. Even know how to harmonize when singing it with my sister.
When I was a child back in the 60s, I heard this song a lot. My grandmother had an album by George Beverly Shea with this song in it, and she played it often. This song gives me such good memories.
When you consider that this girl got her start on a singing competition, to see her reacting to a standing ovation by a room full of her peers was almost as powerful as the performance itself. She also couldn't have had a better accompaniment than Vince Gill.
What you said about Vince’s writing is true, but this hymn is like 200 years old or something. 😂 This is more of a showcase for Carrie, and of course, Vince’s guitar playing. To hear more of his writing and singing, check out “When I Call Your Name,” and “I Still Believe in You.”
All I can say is, thank God for American Idol. If she hadn’t auditioned and then go on to win it, we might never have heard that beautiful voice from an equally beautiful woman and I’m talking inside and outside. Just an amazing talent.
In the industry Vince Gill is know as one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He can make a guitar sing and speak. Carrie I’ve followed since day 1 on idol and even went to her hometown. I love her song “Just a Dream.” We played at my grandpas military funeral. Just epic duo here.
Oh Honey, this hymn has been around since the 1800's. And this is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. Both Carrie & Vince are legends. Carrie won American Idol in 2005.
I absolutely love this performance… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it… you can just feel God on that stage… I’m positive that it has brought people to and closer to God!
Carrie is strong in her faith on and off the microphone. She put out a gospel album too.Shes very versatile in what she can sing as well.A few others to check out.Temporary Home, Something in the water,Just a dream, and before he cheats
Elvis Presley won a Grammy for this song and if you wish to see the true power of the KING then listen to him perform it live no auto tune no electronic enhanced. Just the unbelievable voice of Elvis.
They both are Amazing. Carrie and Vince love the Lord, Carrie was singing this for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have listened to this performance So Many times through the years, it never gets old. This old gospel hymn Never grows old. How Great Thou Art Jesus!
Check Carrie's video Champion ft. Ludacris. Carrie was the Season 4 winner of American Idol ( I believe ). In the Champion video if you look at the jerseys when they show hockey, Fischer is her husband. The surfer that has one one arm is the one the movie Soul Surfer was about, her name is Brittany, and Carrie was in the movie. She has an AMAZING voice. Vince is from a musical family as well. His dad Mickey Gilley was a country artist as well. Vince is married to Amy Grant, a Christian artist.
Very old hymn. Beautiful rendition. Elvis also sang this hymn Carrie Underwood was found on American Idol years ago, she won the season that she was on American Idol.
Vince is a musical genius! His voice is amazing! He has been involved in so many musical events. He was with Pure Prairie League. They didn't write this song, this song was wrote by Swedish Preacher Carl Boberg in 1885.
This was written in 1885. I’m thinking they didn’t write this. Haha. Carrie was discovered on American Idol when she won Season 4. It’s amazing how much she’s grown as an artist.
Vince Gill is prime beyond words. Seen him in concert 35 times ❤ I can’t believe you’ve never heard Carrie Underwood, but I’m sure you’re glad you did !
A very old hymn, and the most moving rendition I've ever heard. Carrie's faith shines through bright and clear when she sings this hymn. I listen to it all the time and it brings me to tears every single time. You feel the Holy Spirit in the room when you listen to this song.
Carrie is a true believer and it has always shown. Hands down one of my favorites. My true joy watching this video was watching you be blown away, no pun intended, by her passion. ❤
When 2 born again Christians praise their Lord. This is a VERY old hymn. Not written by these two performers. Most are familiar with it because George Beverly Shea sang it at virtually every Billy Graham preaching crusade. Do you see the number of people brought to tears. There was a …” Sweet Sweet Spirit in that place” during that performance 💜✝️
Two of my favorites of Carrie's are Blown Away and her duet with Ludacris, Champion. Both really show her power and range. She's had a host of hits over the last couple decades. She's an American Idol winner.
This song is absolutely beautiful it's one of my favorite hymns. Vince Gill is an extremely talented person he also has gotten to tour with the Eagles and he sounds fantastic singing with them.
❤ Carrie sweetheart Awesome job to both of you. Love it🎵🎶 It's just love it so much. Perfection at its best sweetheart to the both of you. Extremely well done. 💖💕👍👍
How Great Thou Art' is a Christian hymn which started life as a poem set to a Swedish melody. The poem, 'O Store Gud' (O Great God), was written by the Swedish poet and lay minister, Carl Boberg, in 1885.
PLEASE READ YOUR COMMENTS. I've listened to this song at least 100 times and it still chokes me up. I tear up every time. She has said Jesus took over and sang thru her. I believe it was him and the angels. Love your reactions Shon. They are real and honest and genuine. Next please react to Carrie and Ludicris with THE CHAMPION. You'll love Carrie even more!!!
Wonderful, so glad you like Vince....Next, this is one of his best, with Patty Loveless You will love the harmonies........Vince Gill - When I Call Your Name (Official Music Video)
Vince Gill's contribution makes this performance a masterpiece. The best solo guitar I've ever heard. you used the perfect word: complemeng. They are perfect together. Check out some old Pure Prairie League. Loved to listen to them in college. " Amy". Is good.
Listen to Vince sing “When My Amy Prays.” It’s about his wife, Amy Grant who is a Christian singer. Beautiful tribute to her and how her faith changed him.
I was going to suggest this after I saw how much you liked him on his video the other day! I get chills every time I hear this. Which is at least 100 times!
Two special Oklahomans there. Carrie is a power house. A rabbit hole of Carrie Underwood is FULL of beautiful songs. Vince is a super loving person, and a great song writer.
This was my Grandma's favorite hymn and we played it at her funeral in 1978. I still get emotional when i hear it, but Carrie Underwood takes it to a whole new level!❤
What's even crazier is that she's still pretty young in this video. This was about 5 years after she won American Idol I believe, and the amount of growth she's had in the past decade since then is incredible. She has even more control of her voice now, as much as that doesn't seem possible based on how amazing this performance was ❤ she also released a new version of this song a couple years ago that really shows how much more mature her voice is now, she's hitting the same notes but with a much more relaxed and effortless tone
That performance was top notch. I just subscribed and I like your enthusiasm to all the reactions I've watched so far. Especially AC/DC.🎸 I'd like to request Craig Morgan "the father my son and the holy Ghost. It's a song about him losing his 19 year old son in a tubing accident. There's a live version and an official video. I recommend the live one. Keep up the good work brother. I'm looking forward to it.
Please react to Carrie singing THE CHAMPION with Ludicris. You'll absolutely love it I promise. Love your reactions. You're real and genuine. Vince is also a great artist.
As a thought, watch Home Free doing How Great Thou Art. Carrie had major chops - this is a capella videoed in the Swiss alps. It’s worth the four minutes :)
My daughter described this performance perfectly, "She's singing this like it's her first day in Heaven!" I couldn't have described it any better.
Amen, absolutely agree!!
Love that ❤
Yessssssss
Are you going to leave this comment on every reaction video to this song? Good grief.
@@AlejandroLopez-pq7ky I am! 😂 😂 Check back here on occasion. I'll list them in case you miss one.

I can't think of a funeral of any of my family that hasn't had this song sang. I've done it a few times myself.
Same here. ❤

I Still Believe in You is a beautiful song.
Written in 1885
They didn’t write this, it’s a church hymnal.
All I can say is, thank God for American Idol. If she hadn’t auditioned and then go on to win it, we might never have heard that beautiful voice from an equally beautiful woman and I’m talking inside and outside. Just an amazing talent.
I knew she was going to be big about 15 seconds into her audition.
