Last Flowers is such an underrated song. They’ve been performing it live since at least 1997 to my knowledge, and decided to finally release it on a B-side album a decade later. It’s such a powerful and raw song
In depth analysis of each song on disk 2 (working progress) MK1: 1:30 This song follows directly after the ending track of in rainbows "videotape" and you can truly feel the emotional slide that was videotape bleed into this first track, both in instrumentals and the hum vocals. It's a short instrumental track that partially sets the mood for later things to come in this b-side. MK is supposed to be an abbreviation of "Mark" so this is literally mark one of the album. With mellow, muffled and reverbed piano and vocals that'll put you in a trance, it surely adds something much needed to the videotape instrumental. One could see it as Faust in the afterlife. My rating: 7.5/10 Down is the new up: 2:24 This song starts off with someone telling themselves or someone else to calm down and trying to reassure themselves of something. Some even say that the "Nothings gonna happen without warning" lyric might be in reference to 4 minute warning. Yorke singing "what is up, Buttercup?" might be like him asking about how a naive optimist could see the world so positively. The Post-Chorus adlibs might represent the character asking out their crush (whatever it may be) in their own head and the vocals are maybe supposed to represent them getting rejected in a cruel fashion, and as for the metaphorical meaning of this in relation to my previous ideas, maybe the guys the protagonist asking out the desirable optimistic mindset to later be rejected by it as it takes over. There is a subtle hint of suicidal lyricism depicting maniacally deciding to jump off possibly a building such as "down is the new up", "without safety gear on I shall now perform an 180 flip flop" and "what if I just flip flopped". As for the end portion, I've always heard thom singing a combination of Topsy turvy town and Toxic to the tounge. Fun fact: some lipreaders say that the businessman from the Just music video says "Down is the new up." The instrumentals on these track feel sort of badass and ominous while still remaining a more glad beat even with the subject matter. I theorize this song may have something to do with Bipolar mood swings and how they can feel. Mania vs Depression with a mix of panic thrown in. My rating: 8/10 Go Slowly: 7:56 This song starts off with our character calling out to someone named "Maria" (most likely in reference to the virgin mary) pleading for them to return or head slowly towards them, possibly to relish the moment while it last or to not get hurt by going too quickly from my interpretation, and has been waiting for this a long time without complaints. Later on this character admits to not having cared about it so much before but only now acknowledging that theres indeed a way out of the situation they find themselves in. This song likely has alot to do with religion, especially the concept of a "afterlife" and living sanctified, but it also has to do with relationships/sex and more subtly suicide idealization and addiction. The instrumentals are very melancholic/mellow and instantly gets you deeply invested in its gloomy child like sound. My rating: 9/10 MK2: 10:40 The second marker for the album and by far the most mysteriously interesting. It's short duration adds to this sentiment. It has an eerily ominous vibe to it like almost terrifying. It sounds like the experimental alien ambience of a haunted vampire castle/mansion. It really fits well with the vibe we've built so far in this album. Both marks are in the first half of this album/EP. Not much else to say about a song that speaks volumes without having any lyrics. It sounds like someone trying to conduct MKUltra on you. My rating: 6/10 Last flowers: 11:24 This song and the rest in this half of the album/EP have a slightly easier to decipher massage behind them IMO. Starting with the first lyric, it might be in reference to diseases like Parkinsons and other degenerative diseases that causes your hands to shake uncontrollably making you unable to properly grasp items and I say this since the title is in reference to one's last flowers (presumably at hospital) before they die. This person feels as if they're dragging people down and is only hurting others in their clumsy state, as shown in the lines "I cannot keep up. Treading on peoples toes". The character also compares their sickly appearance to that of a snot-nosed brat further driving home the narrative of feeling like a burden on others. They later go to talk about how they "cant face the evening straight" (likely in reference to their disease and the depressed state it has put them in) and "you can offer me escape" likely talking about pulling the plug on them. As for the repeated lines of "Houses move and houses speak" i think it's in references to how as their disease gradually worsens they get moved to more intensive care hospitals and that the hospital surroundings they constantly find themselves in is making them associate it with their sicken state/demise. Objects conveying emotions are common theme seen in this song. If we stick to the original idea the person is probably asking you to take them to the afterlife/a funeral home, saying that this would also bring you relief since you wouldn't be having to care for then no more at the end part of the chorus. Verse 2 is probably the person saying that if they have a voice in the matter of what happens to them they'd want what causes them less suffering even if it may cause suffering to the people around them (likely in reference to the assisted suicide idea i brought forward). The outro is probably our character describing how being alive feels for them but also how the flourscent light of a hospital feel. The instrumental feels really tragic almost like a funeral song. 8.5/10 Up on the Ladder 15:40 Onto the next song. The first two lyrics mention the TARDIS and hyperspace which is in reference to BBCs Doctor Who. As for the metaphorical meaning of these lines the TARDIS is known for being much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Perhaps The character is suggesting that he has become trapped by a problem that appeared small, but has become much bigger than he could ever imagine. The next lines mention two extremely risky procedures, Snake charming and motorcades. Snake charming is dangerous since it often uses highly venomous snakes but it's also a display of immense skill and as for motorcades, they're like a parade consisting of slow moving cars often with highly important people inside of them, they're dangerous because of all the assassination attempts that have happened during then (Franz Ferdinand and JFK to name a few) but they're also common displays of power and authority. The metaphorical meaning could be the character suggesting risky actions for the greater good. In the second verse the character basically equates himself with a puppet by controlled by larger figures and societal ideas. This could be in reference to how we are are controlled by societal norms or our governments and cant really say or do anything that isn't out of our "programming". As for the instrumentals, they continue the badassery of Down Is the New Up but ad a slight retro vice city vibe to it like you said. Some parts of the instrumental make me really feel like I'm climbing up a ladder. Everything from the guitars, bassline and drum beats just sound so sick. 9/10 Bangers + Mash: 18:08 Continuing the theme of social commentary in the last song is Bangers plus Mash. This time about the characters disdain for authoritarianism and general rebellious rule breaking nature. It starts off with the character exclaiming that someone has bitten into them like a venomous snake and like you would do to some Bangers and Smash, a dish containing sausages and mashed potatoes generally described as "lower class food". The character seems to want more after being bitten representing their confrontational personality. This person likely feels like the government is screwing them over and is openly disgusted by government decisions as shown in "I'm puking up the wall. It's all heading south to the Conger Hill". "The negatives for cash" might be in reference to debts and taxes. "You're either in the club baby or you're not" may be saying that your either born in the ruling class or you're the rest of us. He describes the poison these government figures have as contagious to him. To tie up this song with the previous song Thom sings "If you are at the top then it is a long drop" like in the Ladder metaphor in the previous song and later on Yorke goes on to say "If you stare into the dark the dark will stare back back into your soul" a reference to Nietzsche and probably means in the context of this that if you expose our power hungry government the government will look into you aswell or that trying to reject megalomaniacal ideals will only bring you full circle. This song ends with the character proclaiming that they'll take down the government officials with them when they themselves go down. This song is by far the most erratic, energetic and experimental song instrumentally. 7/10 4 minute warning: 21:10 This is the last song of the EP. Some historical background: The four-minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operated between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the point at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets. Given this terrifying subject it's no surprise the lyrics are apocalyptic. It starts with the character in shock and refuses to believe that the reality their facing is real life likely after being alerted. Then it goes on to describe the precautions the people are taking to survive the ordeal and the absurd nature of it. The chilling lines of "this is your warning, four minute warning" get repeated to further drive in the realization.
4 Minute Warning originated in England during the Cold War. The song is about being nuked. 4 minutes is how much warning they'd have in England in the event of a nuclear launch. Listen to the song again with that in mind and it's even darker than you realize. And that's why i only listen to it when I'm feeling the doom vibes in the world. 😂😬
I do like some of these songs but I feel they are kind of simple and under developed, which is understandable, they choose which songs they want on in rainbows and then further develop those songs into the beautiful and complex masterpieces you find on in rainbows. Then they move onto their next body of work. King of limbs from the basement is epic mate (in my opinion better than the album) and includes three great singles, The Daily mail, Staircase and Super collider
@@benmicklethwaite I can totally see that! Especially looking back after the full listen! But it still cool to see how much music they were working on or didn’t consider for the initial album!
@@frstlstn They are certainly still very good songs and I do listen to them on occasion. I tend to live on Radiohead, they have an album for every mood and the music never gets boring. They contrast the euphoric and sinister elements beautifully and the experimental complexity works every time, especially the more you listen to them. Thom Yorke leaves his heart and his soul in everything he does which is to much for some I believe, but for me music is about the human condition and very few bands dive so deep. All the band members are exceptional musicians and I would say rather reluctant rock stars which to my mind shows its all about the music. If you do King of limbs from the basement, Super Collider is after the end credits.
