- Revisiting the Roland JX-10 synth , having owned one 30 years ago, and having been gifted with one recently, getting it working properly again, and taking a short nostalgia trip through all the presets.
A journey back to the '80's.
I used to have a JX8p, but would LOVE a JX10 now!
Great playing Tony, and nothing wrong but some what good with retired musicians. I'm one!
I had them both (JX8P and (JX10). Bought them dirt cheap at the end of the 90s when everyone was going digital or virtual analog. I was stupid enough to sell them a couple of years later to buy me a Roland XP80. Man, I was so dumb, now the XP80s are given away for a couple of hundreds and these magnifecent beasts are ten times or more the price I paid.
I know the feeling. I had a Juno 60 once too, that I traded in, but should have kept, and I even gave away a TR808 in the late '80's. if only we had known......

That’s definitely a touching story and a first rate demo. As I said before below a demonstration on a separate channel of the JX-8p, the co-inventor of the Moog synthesizer, Hofstra University Prof. Herbert A. Deutsch told me before he passed away that the true potential of any synthesizer model is in the player, not just the synth itself. If that’s true of anyone, it’s true of you in your demonstration of the JX-10.
I don’t one also from the beginning of 2004 until roughly 9 years later. I loved the sound, and I found myself using it both for attention and for its limited ability to function as a master controller, something you mentioned here. I turned loose of it because it was taking up room and I had become slightly disenfranchised with its keyboard (after getting a Yamaha S90XS which made a far better master controller). However in 2013, I turn loose of the 10 with the vague illusion that I might get the MKS-70 module, something which I didn’t imagine I would actually get to do in 2020. That and the JX8p (whose Osc. 1 square wave generator is somehow deactivated) that I came into from my mentor and his own best student are my classic Roland synthesizers.

I love the SJX as a MIDI controller. It has a nice light touch for driving my computer sounds. I doubt if I ever explored even 1/10 of the things it can do. But I plan to upgrade to the Vecoven chips and add the controller, and see if I can get some more use out of this beast.
If you do the Vecoven upgrade, let me know your thoughts. I'd love to hear what you think.
Nice job! I've wanted one of these since they came out. So 80's. So classic Roland. Prices are just too high for a 35 yr old synth. My Deepmind 12 is as close as I'll get. I enjoyed your story. That's how it was. You had to sell your keyboard to put together the money to buy the next one. It's great to see the gear resurrected and being played again.

you seem super familiar with it, would you care to do a full tutorial on how to program it? it's kinda complicated with the 2 outputs, I alway have pan balance problems
Hi there! I made this video about 3 years ago. As much as I love the JX-10, I found I was not using it a lot, and recently gifted it to a fellow synth enthusiast who I felt would be able to give it more love than I have been giving it.

I had both MKS-70(SuperJX) and JX-8P.
And kept only JX-8P as it sounds much richer and fuller than MKS.
So, as JX-10 is 2 JX-8P, not quite...
A lot of people say that. I have also used both, and I never actually did A/B comparisons of identical presets. Essentially, in terms of architecture, the JX10 is like 2 JX8p's, but the voice boards are not identical, that is true. It may be that if one compared the same presets, that the 8p may be richer or fuller. However, I always viewed the two synths as each having their own character, and I enjoyed the more complex sounds of the JX10. Personally I enjoy the 10 more than the 8p. I guess it's all a matter of taste.
But yeah, while the 10 may be 2 8p's on paper, that is not necessarily how it translates in how they sound.

Back in the day I did exactly that.
Load some patches (that I made for 8P) and on MKS-70 they sounded brighter and thinner.
Someone would say, more refined.
All in all not the same.

Hi Marco, The Gaia is fairly straightforward to program, and is laid out in the traditional Roland format like the SH-1 SH-2 and even the Junos etc. You just have to understand how to select the 3 oscillators, as the controls and sliders are shared when programming.
If you are familiar with programming synths using filters and ADSR sliders, it is easy.
I think it is a very intuitive synthesizer for a beginner as well, and can help one learn the basics.
I really enjoy mine, and it can sound very fat!
Editing not so but soundwize the Jupiter 50 is also very nice (old and New sounds).
I have never tried a Jupiter 50, but I understand it is a slightly stripped down Jupiter 80. I guess there are very few, if any Roland keyboards that do not sound good! I am actually quite keen on trying out a Jupiter X at some point as well.
The JX10 has a special 'old-school' charm, and is certainly not as versatile as a Jupiter 50, or any of the other more modern keyboards are.
@@TonyDrake1960 I agree Roland synths do sound nice. Had a JX3-P and D20. The Jupiter X is a new iteration of the Jupiter 80. The Jupiter 50 is in term of sounds identical to the 80. The difference lies in ergonomics (touchscreen) and polyfony as timbrality. Loads of JV JX Juno and Jupiter samples/sounds. The really cool stuff is that piano's (acoustic instruments) can be mimmicked/played to a realistic level due to Super Natural (great concept in itself, like the D50 was by concept groundbreaking).

Uea that squelchy synth bas is horrid so is the electric piano.
Your opinion is valid. It's a subjective thing. It depends on what you are comparing it to. Obviously never going to be as 'good' as a real Rhodes, or the sampled stuff we have access to today. It was a refreshing and unique sound in 1987, not as good as the DX7 in those days, but better than most 'analogue' or DCO driven synths of the day.
@@TonyDrake1960 I just do reverb strings. Big fat string pads.
It seems to go well with the strings on my VFX. That and jx10 together. It's like digital strings and analog strings behind it.
Nobody talks about blending string sounds together. There are so many string sounds. I like to have several together.
@@amonster8mymother The VFX is a cool machine. I have never owned one, but I imagine you could make great layers and combos with them. Enjoy!
