'Homeless' in Singapore

  • Some hold jobs. Some even own homes. But sleeping on the streets is a choice for some of them, unlike the typical image one thinks of when “homeless” is mentioned. A recent survey highlighted the unexpected quirks of destitutes in Singapore, where employment and home ownership were at rather high levels among the 180 destitutes found over a five-hour span.

I've worked in Singapore for 7 years and yes, I saw some elders living on the street. It is so heartbreaking 😢 seeing old people on the streets because it is the time of their lives that they should be taken care of and enjoying the rest of the years that they will be alive

I can't help but wonder, what decisions in life had led them to this stage -- of how much they have been through and how they are still surviving through it all. What mental strength and grit they must have developed.
How ironic that the old man is sleeping in the vicinity of Marina Bay, surrounded and juxtaposed with wealth all around.
Why do I feel depressed now....

Seeing how the meritocrotic nature of Singapore runs, those who can't compete will fall down the food chain. When PAP viewed the immigration of skilled workers that almost outnumbered the people, the local populace will have hard time to compete.
This is pretty similar to how the Malays felt when the British bring in bulks of foreign workers into the region until it outnumbered the locals there, that lead to the existence of Malay rights in Malaysia. Singapore needs to restrict the number of outsiders into the country to let their own people flourish. It's not about being racist, it's about taking care of your own people. What's the point of making money if the lack of humanity consume your souls.

    • @ashlyn52994

You are right. it is so depressing to see that there are people who are left behind while the country progresses. Our social welfare isn't as substantial as other countries. It is even sadder knowing most (not all) Singaporeans are self centered and wouldn't think about helping these group of people.
The government can't help them, the people think its the government job and won't help them.. how to put an end to this situation in Singapore

Sure there's a lot of problem, and this rental flat for single is studio with no bed room, it's very small with no privacy, valuable can be easily seen, easy to have conflict with two people living in a different life style, that's why they rather sleep outside. I think they should change the part where one person are allow to rent and not compulsory to be only rent by two.

Every year many old people die alone, it's called 孤独死 or "solitary death." Often their body isn't found for a few months and became completely rotten. It's really awful.

I'm a canadian of chinese decent. Canada is perceived as a compassionate society with a social safety net for the less fortunate. Billions has been spent on poverty reduction and homelessness. Yet Toronto city government is the largest slum lord in North America. They own the buildings housing low income families. Buildings are now 40 to 50 years old and beyond repair. Hence, families live in slum buildings. The cost to repair is astronomical and not practical. Better to sell the land and build new. Good intentions of the past has led to a crisis of affordable housing.
The destitute are often mentally ill, addiction issues, criminal past, trafficked, run aways with domestic issues, abused women, etc...We even have shelters that can house 100s of people, but you must leave in the morning. There are even all day warming shelters for those extremely cold days. We have one of the most successful charitable food drives. None of these initiatives have made a significant impact on homelessness and poverty.
You can spend billions or nothing and still have poverty and homeless. There are no easy answers. But affordable housing is the cornerstone of poverty reduction.

I once had a friend that lived in Indonesia and she said that life there is hard, but she said the biggest problem is actually people are lazy and do not want to work or study hard. They would rather steal, cheat, and do other dishonest things instead of working and studying or they just give up completely. She said there was there were many opportunities around but many young people just do not want to even try.

Homeless people are everywhere, is not just happening in Singapore. Is happening in Europe, in England and Wales we too have a lot of homeless people sleeping in the street. Some are pretenders who make a living out of the generosity of the public, wheather they are pretenders or truly homeless. Either through a fault of they own or due to various economic or health reasons, is a shame to the British government or any governments in the world to allow it to happen to it citizens. Social care and health so be all governments top priority, especially in countries where they is cold weather. We in England and Wales have a lot of empty building, surely the British government can afford to create special needs for their citizens who have fallen into hard time. By creating temporary accommodation so the homeless do not have to sleep on the streets, with a given address so the homeless can apply for seekers allowance and apply for jobs. Once successful candidate's who got a job then they can move on to a different accommodation and from they onwards to private accommodation or to council accommodation etc. All citizens should be given a chance

For a government who constantly shits on Malaysia because they are lower in economy and always seems to take in high skilled workers into their country by abandoning the local populace, you'd see how hypocritical the PAP is.
The Malays of the peninsular experienced this when the British took in foreign labours that outnumbered the locals, now Singapoerans (especially those who always claled the Malay rights as racist) will feel the same thing Malays back then had when their own government brought in number of workers that rivalled the entire residents numbers.
