  • If you are taking a road trip across country roads, still water lakes, and evergreen mountains it’s a must to be playing the soothing songs of James Taylor. The legendary singer and songwriter was a master lyricist and guitarist. He also happens to be one of the best-selling musicians of all time; Taylor gave the world some of the most soothing tunes like “Fire and Rain,” “You’ve Got A Friend,” and “Carolina On My Mind.” But for all his success in the music industry and songwriting prowess, Taylor also faced his fair share of tragedy, which was a stark contrast from the contents of his songs. Here are the tragic details.

James Taylor is not tragic, he found ways to rise up in his life amidst all the plights. Admirable to see where he's risen up from the ashes like a "Phoenix" to flying free. We all have perils to overcome, it's just how much we want to persevere.

I agree. He is one of the luckiest guys on the planet. He was born so very pretty. He has a great mind and fabulous talent. He has many close friends. He has four children whom he loves. He is happily married. He is fabulously wealthy. Tragic? I think not.

My old man was friends with his brother Livingston in college- and through him, met James a time or two. He always told of the time he spent the evening at a get together with Livingston, brother James, his then wife Carly Simon, and their friend Carol King, who cooked spaghetti for everyone. (I would tell that story all the time too- hell, I am telling it now on his behalf. 😝)
Anyway, he always said James was very nice. And would take any young lady he happened to be dating to James Taylor shows and take them back stage.
So, while my pop introduced me to a world of incredible music, James Taylor holds something of a special place. And I always think of my dad when I hear him.
    ...
    Peace & Love, everyone!
    Stay safe out there!

Wow. Great info. I'm from the 60's and learned something clever from James here. Addiction steels time and we are meant to be always learning. So by doing drugs we hit the feel good button over and over and can never learn anything the entire time. I can agree for hard drugs but not shrooms and pot. As an adult anyway. As a young developing mind that's another topic.

When I was a teenager I went to visit a friend of mine who ended up in a mental hospital in northern Jersey I can't remember the name of the place. They had a bust made out of bronze outside of James Taylor's head. Apparently he had donated it to the place because he had spent a bunch of time there and had said he had wrote part of fire and rain in that particular hospital because he spent time in a few facilities.and this isn't something I just thought up I read this on something hospital administration had underneath of the bust explaining why it was there.

A little story about my Mother meeting James Taylor. Many years ago James would come to Australia and spend time on a friend's farm. Sometime in the 1980s(?), on his last day on one such trip, he crashed his car into my Mother's car round a round-a-bout in my home town. Funny thing is my Mother did not know who he was, only that he was some foreign dude who crashed into her and claimed that he was leaving the country that day and it was all so inconvenient for him. My Mum was spooked a little about this guy's story about leaving Australia on the day he pranged into her so she came home, dropped off the shopping and raced to the insurance office to ensure that all was above board and the paperwork and insurance excess, etc, had all been taking care of. As soon as she started to describe the events, the girl behind the counter let out an ear-piercing scream. "Arrrh, arrrh." Followed by, "You're the lady that James Taylor crashed into." My poor mum had still had no idea what this girl was talking about and then mum was suddenly mobbed by more girls rushing from everywhere to see the woman who James Taylor crashed into. Eventually, the girls calmed down and explained to my bewildered Mum who James Taylor was and confirmed that James had done the right thing already with the car rental company and everything was good to go for the family car to be repaired. Mum described James as being a gentleman and very apologetic but something didn't seem quite right about him or his story, but it turned out to be true.

Nathanael Corker I don’t think people are saying it’s ok either. Compared to what is going on, it isn’t at the top of the list. Drug addiction unlike a virus only hurts the addicted, not thousands of people. So yes, while tragic, it isn’t the worst tragedy either.

Speaking of infedelities, what's that rumor involving a young mother's confrontation with a famous singer during teh recording of Nicolette Larson's final album, circa 1994?

This is flawed. I don't think he wrote "You've got a Friend". I believe that was Carol King and Gerry Goffin.

This writer is stupid and more than likely a liberal bleeding heart democrat. I have known that Carol wrote this song this song for him because she was his "friend" since the year it came out.
Kinda like the "news anchor" here in Nashville who last night in referring to the corona virus, said that heat would kill it in a microwave because most bacteria could be killed with heat...... It's a"VIRUS" you dumb ass media person.

James and his wife, Kim, just donated a million dollars to the hospital (Massachusetts General Hospital) he was born in and where his father had been the chief resident. I'd say that he's doing pretty good.

It's the drugs alone... why does people get addicted; is it because pain or fun? I will never understand anyways because there is still so many good things to do on this earth instead considering these people have fame and moooooney!

You guys mislead me into thinking we had lost a wonderful human being. You shouldn't throw out words like "tragic" in your titles and then go on to exploit genius artists like that....his past is not who he is anyways. It's just not ethically responsible.
