From what I recall, it's exactly what you thought: this music video was made by splicing clips together from fans singing the song. Actually, Placebo's cover of "Running Up That Hill" was how I first found out about Kate Bush (whom I grew to love over the years by exploring her discography over the years). In the late 2000's-early 2010's (end of High School and beginning of college) I was a big of Placebo. I found them on TH-cam from a song/music video called "Song to Say Goodbye." Some their tracks that I love include: "Protege Moi"; "Meds"; and "Sleeping With Ghosts" among others. If you like their sound, then you may want to check them out. I digress, this cover of "Running Up That Hill" is very different from the original. Kate Bush's song was about the relationship between men and women and/or partners in love. In this version, Kate's deal with God sounds more like a deal with the Devil. I've always felt the climax of "let's exchange the experience" is given new meaning here--because Placebo's cover sounds to be less about wanting an understanding by walking in another's shoes, but more a longing to be someone else or to have what they possess. I think many teens and young adults are insecure and this desire to be someone else or wake up in another life seems ubitquous. Anyways, thanks for your reaction. I appreciated hearing your thoughts and listening to you jam out afterwards. I'm looking forward to the Kate Bush journey. Over the years, I've only listened to some of her songs here and there, because he work is so complex and I love to savor each new song I find before obsessing on a new one. Nonetheless, I'll try to joing you on the audio journey!
Nice. I’d forgotten about this one. So many people have covered this song. I’d love you to have a look at some Talk Talk songs if you get time. Start with the early stuff though - “Such a Shame” would be good. Then “Life’s What You Make It”. By the time you get to the later stuff you’ll think it’s a different band. You won’t regret it 😊
I think I recall a video at the time, I think he was walking up a building... it might just be my imagination though. It's a great cover, very sinister atmosphere, and what a groove. 2003 it came out, that was a dark year.
Looks like I'm mistaken, you had the official video up. I might be getting confused with another song of theirs... hang on... oh. I found it. Okay, it comes with a big red warning, you'll have to click to get past because it's too difficult for today's hard-of-thinking generation... Sorry, I get it, it needs a warning, but anyway, it's why Placebo are so well-remembered, it's a fantastic groove and a hard-hitting video, a great piece of art... sorry, I forgot to tell you which one - it's Pure Morning, I would recommend it. As you can imagine it was quite controversial, but a Top Ten hit here in the UK nevertheless, we were riding the wave of Britpop at that point, anything edgy was acclaimed. Placebo burst onto our scene in 1997 with Nancy Boy, and that is another video you will want to check out, again, a very controversial video, but backed up by a banger of a tune so hey, they get away with it. As I say, it's a serious artform, and for a time we were VERY good at it.

Kate Bush sings back up on the chorus.
There are great covers of this song from dance to hard rock. I just don't think this dirge does it for me.
