      Exactly how I feel. I was checking the music stores in my city to see what brands they have and I checked every single bass on TH-cam within my budget and decided that Squire affinity jazz was gonna be the one I buy, until I go to reddit and it says they hate it because they make it with bad wood and it doesn't last long 💀 I haven't bought my bass yet and I won't for another couple months till I collect enough money, but the more I learn the more I'm like "I though I was gonna spend at most 400$. With everything I will actually need I may have to spend a good 800$ instead at this point" and I've only collected 200$ so far :') I didn't even know basses needed a setup until today, and they say it's easy to make but I don't wanna mess up

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Hi Priya, great question and thanks for watching! There are lots of factors that go into play for instrument ergonomics, although scale length is certainly an important one. You should look first for an instrument that you think sounds great, and then maybe consider scale length as a secondary factor. The good news is that the selection of short scale basses has been growing and is about to get much bigger with new short scales coming out from Ashdown, Nordstrand, G&L, Reverend, Sire and more. I'm 17, 5'9". Looking into getting a bass, I found a 5 string Ibanez for $185 and I'm wanting to eventually do music like Chelsea Grin, djent ish. I'm stuck between just sticking with vocals but I also find the bass so intriguing.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cheetodust5406 Not sure what is the model of that particular Ibanez bass, but in general a 5-string Ibanez is a great place to start if you want to get into playing djent or other heavier music that is detuned.

    • @jery3385
      @jery3385 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man I'm somewhat in the same boat as you,I have started doing vocals since last December,I can do pretty good lows and mids,highs not so much, I'll get there eventually tho.
      I currently own a bb234, here's the thing,if you're gonna do metal and stuff like that,you should buy a bass with at least one humbucker,you can still get a good metal tone out of a pj style bass,if you know how to arrange the knobs and properly EQ that is.
      But a problem with doing vocals and playing an instrument at the same time,is that if you fuck up a bit on either one when on stage or just when you practice,it throws you off balance completely,so I'd say that if you can always practice doing both at the same time.

    so i’m 5’1 and mostly listen to music that falls into the j-rock/j-pop (japanese music type) category. also bands such as green day, roselia, and i guess a lot of what people would consider anime music. i’ve just been wondering what bass type would be better: like a five string or four string, a shorter scale or regular one.

      Hi Habibi, side note - I had a magician friend in high school called The Great Habibi. He was awesome! On to your question I recommend a standard scale jazz bass. I’m not a huge fan of 5 string jazz basses because they can be very neck heavy. If you need the 5-string, consider a modern design 2 pickup bass like the Ibanez Soundgear or Schecter Omen series.

    Two months into playing bass. I haven't bought one yet, but am borrowing a friend's bass. It's a Fender Jazz bass. It's a beauty, and easier to play now that I have callouses. I played cello, alto sax, and bari sax in the 70s, so I'm no stranger to musical nomenclature. The hard part is not having written music to play. Also, listening to Steely Dan's bass lines is overwhelming. Just how in TF do I make sense of that? I'm thinking the dude is some kind of musical sorcerer.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure which Steely Dan album you’re listening to, but yeah, Chuck Rainey is one of the greats. Your experience with other instruments is a great asset. Keep plugging away at it little by little and you will get there. If you are feeling truly stuck on the Steely Dan stuff, try any of the following: 1) work your way up to Steely Dan by starting with other bands like Chicago, BST, or the Doobie Bros. 2) slow the songs down. You can do this by clicking the gear icon in the corner of a TH-cam video and lowering the speed to 75%. My wife got me a pedal by Vidami that allows me to do this and loop portions of the video. I love it! 3) watch a “bass cover” or tutorial on the song or section you are stuck on. 4) Use those reading chops and purchase a Steely Dan bass songbook.

    Almost 6 years ago I bought my first bass, Stagg b300sb. And 2 years ago I changed pickups on it to seymour duncans j bass bass lines. It sounds really nice now.
    The most recent purchase I made in 11th month of 2019. I bought a Sire MM V7 ash maple, 5 string. I also have yamaha trbx505. Now I am in market for a nice fretless 4 string or maybe
    I should buy a 6 string and if I buy one should I go with high C string and do some chordal work or with low F sharp (as it gives me low B flat and A without detuning low B) and stick to the groove .

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love 6 strings and use the high C. Low F# is less common and, depending on your amp situation, may require a new speaker cap that can handle it. Fretless is also fun.

    I started with the Ibanez Jump Start package and it was great. I have since bought an Epiphone Goth Tbird, a Jackson short scale (which I really don't like), an Ibanez acoustic/electric, and a Fender Highway 1 P bass. I am now in the market for another bass (I gave away the Ibanez that came with the Jump start and the Tbird -I regret doing both). I now want a jazz or jp style. Not sure if this is hitting your radar after so long. But here goes.
    Jazz basses, are they easier for complete beginners in terms of neck, body, handling etc. ?
    the P basses have a wider neck and what often seems to be a more compact body. But are they harder to train a left hand to hold and move between notes. ?
    I read comments in preference in bother directions for the handling and learning. Having never played anything I worry I’ll make things harder than necessary without understanding something.
    Thanks for the material here.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, Frederick! I don't believe neck width on a 4 string is as big of a factor in terms of ease of playing as a good setup. Like you said, people have preference in either direction.

    Hi. I am interested in learning to play bass guitar. I already have musical background, I play the steeldrums for 22 years. I am in my 60s and am around 5'2.5". I have not started on the bass yet, just trying to get the feel of what brand of bass guitar to buy. Songs I like are Another one bites the dust (Queen) Natural Mystic (Bob Marley) - reggae, Get off of my cloud - Rolling Stones. I mainly like Rock and Roll, Reggae, Can you feel it - The Jacksons. I like that kind of sounding bass. I have small hands so should I choose a short scale or standard size? My budget is $500 - 600 for a new bass.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Susie, thanks for watching and for giving all of the info. At your budget level, there are a lot of great options. Based on the music you like, I'd recommend a bass with J or PJ pickups. That will cover a lot of ground in terms of the music you like. A short scale bass will be a bit easier on your left shoulder and back. The Fender Mustang PJ and Sire U5 should be high on your consideration list as they are both passive short scale basses that aim to sound very close to a traditional P or J. Another One Bites the Dust was recorded with a StingRay, which is an active bass. If you gravitate more towards that sound and Chic, check out the Sterling Short Scale.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The AwkwardAnimator. Great question and thanks for including references for the music you like. Mike Dirnt from Green Day plays a four, and it sounds like most of the Palaye Royale is 4 string too, although sometimes in Drop D tuning. I’d recommend a 4 for the music you like. At your budget, I’d look for a used Precision bass style instrument by Squier, Ibanez (Talman series), or Yamaha (BB series). If you are in the UK or EU, you could also look for new basses by Harley Benton. Haven’t played on myself, but I hear they are good for the money. Let me know what you end up getting. :) Good luck and be well!

    Q: I played on a Yamaha with the eq knobs THOUGH THE FRETS FELT LOWER AND HAVING REALLY BLURRY VISION I RELY ON MY SENSE OF FEEL. THE YAMAHA TBRX HAD THE ACTIVE switch but then I grabbed a Esp ltd bass and loved how it felt in my hands and found myself to really get in a groove.
    Can you recommend a few active basses for me to consider that will suit my taste in Music I want to play.. Please?!
    Sorry this comment is rather lengthy. Lastly I have been thinking of the Orange Crush 50 bass, any advice on which bass and amp I should look at?
    Thanks and I enjoy having discovered how much I appreciate Bass and want it to be my primary looking forward to the Journey ahead of me. I usually place dotted stickers on the back of the neck to allow me to feel which fret I am at just as the fret markers do on the fret board to help faster transition and all.

      @soundslikeben  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi GregOry, good questions. For your music tastes, yes, many bass players prefer active basses. A key distinction is that while the bass has an active pickup, the pickups are usually, (but not always) passive.
      I’m a big fan of some of the Schecter basses like the C-5, Omen, or Stiletto models.
      ESPs are also good. If it felt great to you and you liked the sound, then that is the bass I would go with.
      Basses, like guitars, are made with different size frets. The Yamaha TRBX series has medium frets, while many ESPs have extra jumbo frets. Fret size is a matter of personal preference. It sounds like you prefer larger frets.

      For 5 strings, I'm a big fan of Yamahas BB434 and 435. You may also want to check out the Sterling by Musicman S.U.B StingRay 5. Flea used a StingRay for a lot of RHCP stuff (especially live). th-cam.com/video/QhPv3v5W19k/w-d-xo.html Tim Commerford used a StingRay with RATM on their first album before switching to Jazz Basses.
      If you prefer a smaller body, the Yamaha TRBX and Ibanez Soundgear series are good starting points.
      For amps, if your budget is low, I recommend finding a used amp by Ampeg, Hartke, GK, SWR, or Markbass. Flea used GK forever.

      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tijn, thanks for watching. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm not sure what is slick looking to you, but if you like more traditionally styled basses, look for a Sire, Sterling, or Yamaha in that range. Even better would be lightly used bass. If you prefer more modern basses, I'm a fan of Schecter's Omen and Stiletto series.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sun, what a great way to start. At 8 years old, a smaller bass may be beneficial. I like the Gretsch G2220. (You can search for my review of that bass.) The Ibanez SRMD200 is also a good option. Below $299, the basses tend to have setup issues and poor electronics. If you need to buy at a lower point, I recommend looking for a used version of one of the recommended basses. You can find used music gear on used.guitarcenter.com, craigslist, or reverb.com.

      That means PASSIVE!!!!! There is a Squire by Fender Jazz Bass for $399
      I'm a big Metallica fan (I'm an electric guitar player), but the bass tone is not anything noteworthy to me- it's just a low tone to compliment the guitar parts.
      No reason to chase that bass tone, in my opinion.
      Regarding Flea in RHCP, the bass tone is badass Larry Graham-inspired slapping.
      It's a no-brainer for me. :)
      As an electric guitar player, I DESPISE active pickups, but I don't play bass yet so....
      For a shorter scale there's a Fender Mustang Bass.

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chantal,
      Are you left-handed? Even if you are, you may want to consider a right-handed instrument. Most other instruments (winds, strings, percussion families) do not differentiate between left and right handed instruments because you will need to development significant skill with both hands. That said, I’m equally uncoordinated in each hand, so what do I know?
      Those Fender MIJ 62 reissues have a great reputation. It will surely hold value well. If you can afford it, go for it. I prefer the Yamaha 434 to the 234 because of the neck joint. I believe there is some magic in there. That said, if a 234 is what you can afford, it is definitely a good enough bass to get started.

    Hi! I’m 5”1, and trying to decide if I want a full scale or short scale. I currently use my dads full scale Ibanez, which I like, but it is a little hard for me to stretch my fingers to hit notes (tiny hands haha). Would it be harder to learn on a short scale? Also, I like music like I guess you’d say metal core/hardcore/punk like Wage War, Bring me the Horizon, Beartooth, Motionless in White, Of Mice and Men ect.. but also things like Black Sabbath, Pantera, Korn, Manson, Zombie
    My question is what kind of bass should I get for that more metal / metal core type sound, should I get 4 or 5 string, and should I get short scale or full? Budget would probably around $250/$300 including an amp. Thanks in advance!

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cometcrumbs. Thanks for watching. Your dad plays bass? You have a resource advantage that most new bass players don't. You should definitely ask him about it. The benefit of having something to share with your dad far outweighs the difference between one brand of bass and another. For the music you like, I recommend sticking with a standard scale bass. Ibanez is a good brand for it, as is Schecter. The Ibanez Mezzo series is a medium scale (32") which could be worth looking into as well.

I’m having second thoughts if its a good idea to get the shorter scale or go all out with the regular and a chance to struggle with higher frets. I also accidentally taught myself with my dominant hand (right) on the frets (and its a struggle to switch back) would it be a good idea to look into a left handed bass? The best music ever created was lay down with the fourth string P bass or jazz bass. A four string bass is all you will ever need.

    What would you recommend between Cort Action Plus and Jackson JS2 Concert?

      I have not been able to get my hands the Cort yet, so I can’t give a real comparison between the two based on personal experience. I’ll try and get hold of one soon because I am curious.

    Hey! Your video was very helpful for me! I've been dreaming to start playing bass for a while now and I'm pretty sure I would order a short scale one because I have really small hands. I don't really have a budget limit but I would rather pay around 300$ dollars if that's possible. I love many kinds of bands like green day, avenged sevenfold, metallica, bmth, egypt central and megadeth so I would like to have a bass between those ranges if that's even possible (if it's not possible, I'd rather go towards an avenged sevenfold kinda sound)
    I would also like to know what amp I should get. Do bass need a special kind of amp? I think I could pay between 50-150$
    Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help!

      Be good listen to your parents do your homework keep your room clean do chores as far as bass I went to the guitar center app I found so many good inexpensive bass options I picked up a yahamah 4 string bass for 75 US dollars I also got a protection plan for it it's good to do and shipping total 138 I think if your serious decated and very well respectful towards your parents and you go above and beyond expectations and depending on financial ability you owning a bass is not so far out of reach save your earnings don't spend money on stuff save what you get find a bass that you like if you don't have the Internet go to the Guitar Center and ask for the technician and a guitar employee to help you with choosing your bass and if you can ask the technician to do a basic setup for you so the cost of the bass plus the cost of the setup plus the protection plan 280 US dollars should get you a beautiful bass bring 300 if you can but if that's too much money you can get a 4 string bass for 140 no problem and a 40 dollar amp and strings tuner for about 200 on ebay less if you go second hand be patient the harder you want it and earn it the sweeter the reward good luck to you

      I started at 14. I saved up money mowing lawns and bought my first bass, which was nowhere near as good as the entry level basses available today. If your parents can support you, that is wonderful, but you can also get going on your own with a little ingenuity.
      Bass buzz offers good beginner lessons. If you want a more formal system and are ready to put in the effort, Tony Grey’s Bass Academy has a ton of great material and is very systematic.

      Last week I bought a GSR200 and I like it, got it plugged into a Fender Rumble LT25. Great practice gear without breaking the bank. The Fender got a tuner and FX that can be adjusted and stored, all you really need to start practicing.

    @santanajackson6160 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think 300 to 350 you can get a bass that sou nds just as good as a more higher end bass . dedinitely get a bass that has decent pickups

    • @majorfierce
      @majorfierce 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi, what kind of pickups would you recommend (like do you mean active/passive? or specific types of pickups)

    • @soundslikeben
      @soundslikeben  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a lower budget instrument, you will probably get nicer pickups in a passive bass since the manufacturer does not also have to cover the cost of an active preamp. The type of pickups (p/j/soapbar) depends on the music you like. Just see if you like the way the bass plays and sounds.
