- It's no secret that Season 4 Episode 4 of Stranger Things launched an unprecedented rise in streams for the Kate Bush hit "Running Up That Hill". The orchestral version of the song used in "Dear Billy" was absolutely insane. Chills all over. I haven't found the version anywhere on TH-cam without the scene so I thought I'd take a crack at it and reproduce it myself! Here is the "Running Up That Hill" version used in Stranger Things. I hope you enjoy.

The song on its own it's all that great. The remix and adding of the orchestra, combined with what was going on with Max is why it was so impactful. But the vanilla song on it's own is very average.

as i saw this scene i was crying like hell. i lost my mother this year and was crawling into a corner isolating myself. drawing back from everything. as i saw this scene i had this powerful desire to reach out to my friends and not to drown in this grief. i understood i had to reach out to others or i will be lost. im so glad stranger things exists. it gave me so much.

Yeah, I think it was the peak of the season. At least emotionally. And also it's the scene that set this season apart from the rest. I would've liked more from those 2 characters in the following episodes. It never quite get to that high after this imo.

Season 3 : Never Ending Story - saves Hawkins

Most importantly, after reading so many comments from different other songs, it seems these songs and Stranger Things scenes help save REAL PEOPLE’S lives it seems. Glad to hear that. Guys out there, be strong and never fall into doom and despair. There are hopes. There are friends out there that truly help us.

I can't watch this scene without crying. Anyone who has experienced trauma just feels this scene so deeply. Those of us who survive are always out there fighting--it is a lifelong battle. Never miss an opportunity to tell the people you love how much they mean to you because you never know when they might need it the most.

They’re hinting towards it a ton, if they don’t put them back together I’ll be disappointed. This season really won over Lucas’ character for me, I was never really interested in him much before but this time he just did such a great job, same with Max, they’re my new favorite couple and definitely in my top 3 favorite characters, 1st is Dustin of course.

This scene is hands down one of the best scenes in all of television history. I can't think of a individual scene that really competes with the tension, emotion, and overall power.
If Victor Creel was spared by Vecna cause he was his father not because he was 'protected' and kept awake by the music, it means that there was no proof that playing Max's favourite song should have worked on her so the whole scene was illogical. It was beautiful though.

This song will be forever tied to Max as a character. The Duffer brothers portrayed her perfectly and did a fantastic job of evolving her character! She is indeed a bad ass! And the music is orchestrated perfectly!
In Britain, the number of charts and streams it's topped since Dear Billy made national news, literally. Best part? Kate Bush owns all the rights to the song, so all the proceeds from its new fanbase go to her.

Who else thought Max was a goner when the montage of her from the previous seasons came on, literally shouting RUN GO GO when the portal opened
I knew she was going to survive but it was still intense. However they did get me when the screen went black thinking the episode would end in a cliffhanger for a second.
(Spoilers btw) this is my FAVORITE episode of all time. Max is such a badass!! the adrenaline i felt when she was running away from vecna was just AUGH so much emotions in just a few minutes!! This song brings back all the adrenaline i had a few days ago :) Thank you for posting this!!!

Sadie Sink totally deserves an Emmy for this iconic scene. She did an amazing job playing Max in this episode. I was crying a little when Max was running from Vecna. What an iconic song for an iconic scene and an iconic character. Running Up That Hill was a perfect choice!

This scene was so intense, somber, and wholeheartedly made me feel something deep down that I had not felt in a long time. Stranger Things is so personal to me and I’m so thankful to be a part of the fandom and to feel like family to these amazing people. They are phenomenal and I look up to them as people and as actors. I've been listening to Kate Bush since I was 10. Yea I am 51 now. The resurgence of this song was phenomenal. I've always known she was well ahead of her time. The way they used this song in Stranger Things was powerful. A moment a song can change your perspective on life, and there are times and places worth fighting for. Ha, Kate Bush/Max are heroes!

I’m back again after so much time. I remember seeing this scene for the first time and being caught off guard. I didn’t expect to relate. After getting sober and surviving a suicide attempt. I called my mom one night after having withdrawals. She picked me up. After having hallucinations and threatening my life, I was sent to a psych ward where I was medicated. And finally had help. I never thought I’d make it. And this scene is the perfect metaphor of that. Thank you to my family. Thank you to everyone around the world who’s strong enough to help those in need.
In case anybody was wondering, this genre of music is called "epic pop" or "orchestral pop," formerly an offshoot of Alternative I believe.

I was 17 when the song was released in 1985. I have strong memories of it, but when I watched this scene, I was blown away. The adding of the orchestra kicked it up to Eleven. My wife, never a fan of Kate Bush, was equally impressed.
Will ALWAYS BE one of the most iconic, memorable and seat-gripping, emotional scenes in TV series history.
Anyone who looked into that cold abyss and hear it whisper its sweet promises, then turned and ran as fast and hard as you can to help sobbed during this.
It's never too late to turn around
This was such a poignant moment, I was shaken for a good while after taking in this episode. The setup has been poetic, like, even Vecna stated how people live their lives without meaning, just "waiting for it all to be over." I just love the story's commentary on working through trauma. For Max to decide she's not ready to die - because she sees hope to live a life fully alive - well that's a hope for the rest of us to hold onto. Season 5 is going to be an existential masterpiece.

Stranger Things, I think, has turned into an instant classic tv series. There are very few truly classic tv series and I think this is one of them.

Stranger Things has made me fall in love with music from back then all over again. The orchestral here is beautiful and this intense scene with Max was the perfect metaphor for battling depression and trauma. I’m so proud of the production in this show, it’s so intense and real!! ❤
The Best version
When season 4 began, the "bad guy" made me start to think that maybe the show was starting to run out of steam. Then this scene happened, and made me think that this might even turn out to be the best season yet.

Max's character is a good indicator of how much they turned the writing around in Stranger Things. When she was introduced in Season 2, I found her rather annoying. Season 3 made me practically hate her. I wasn't expecting much for Season 4, but all of a sudden I found myself caring deeply for Max, and when this scene played, I was at the edge of my seat.
I was watching the episode with my dad. When it ended, we simultaneously said "Holy shit." One of the most amazing scenes ever put to film.
💯👌🏻 Someone mentioned in another post that the last two episodes were Theater worthy, and l agree 10000%! I was mostly indifferent to Max the first few seasons. I kinda identified with her a bit when her brother was being a 🍆 but not much character development other than Jane/EL/11. I was definitely surprised by season 4 though! I developed an attachment to half of the characters in this season and was emotionally stirred when it got more dramatic and intense, and then this SONG?! WOW! It's definitely a top moment that I'll rewatch several times!!
God that scene got me. On the one hand, you don't expect them to kill a main character. On the other hand, usually when a scene gets dragged out a ton, it's a trope to then kill the character as a surprise (which, now being a trope unto itself, isn't) - and they played with those competing perceptions *perfectly* in how they laid out that scene; and then the acting? Stellar! Loved it!

They did everything so this song turns to be their anthem. It's very much what this all show is about. I think this season has been what this show was supposed to be when they first thought about it... an epic 80s sensationnal retro fight to gather family and friends.

The original song is about Kate wanting to swap places with her boyfriend who commited suicide. Not saying she wanted to die, but she wanted to swap to see how he felt, so she could share his trauma. Similar to the song Hate Me.

Finally I found it! This season taught me so much, to keep Runnin' Up That Hill, even when times are dire.
The orchestral music makes the song even more intense and emotional. I got chills watching the scene where Max was running from Vecna. The ending where Max stopped floating and was cradled in Lucas' arms and the scene where Lucas, Dustin and Steve comforted her was very sweet but sad at the same time. The whole episode teared me up.

Season 4 gave me the biggest feels. Each episode was so well done. Max played her character so well. She was definitely one of the best, especially after season 3.
