The leaves on mine are drooping and falling off. The pot is small (about six inches tall and six inches in diameter) and the plant is about two feet high. The drooping leaves on the plant are not brittle. I water it 2-3 times a week. Am I over watering?
My mum loves Thunbergia, the plant she grew last year went crazy (garden centre purchase and was quite expensive) I diligently harvested seeds and this Spring duly popped them in compost in a yoghurt pot. Of the 12 seeds planted (in two yoghurt pots) three germinated, they are now growing up 1.9m obelisks in my garden going great guns. I also discovered two self seeded plants in the garden which amazed and delighted me. The climate in the UK isn’t really conducive to growing Thunbergia (in my opinion) so I feel very.honoured that they grew and survived.
I have several in my garden, here in Johannesburg South Africa they grow over 20 feet long in fact they can become quite invasive. They flower 365 days a year in my garden and are simply gorgeous.
I just bought some BES seeds for my mom, she's been wanting a planter box for next to the front steps, this is going to be so perfect! Thank you for introducing me to this plant!!!
Thanks for the advise! I love to trim and tie plants into spirals or other odd shapes kind of like bonsai. It makes any common plant a little different then every other one around. Catches peoples eyes to.
I am liking it too, a cream colored with black eye.. pretty sweet! reminds me the one reaching for the sky I better catch up with it and bring it down .. LOL they really can get away from ya in the greenhouse.. thanks Audra, it is really filling in with color..
Thanks to you I grew them last year, I looked for the seed this year and could not find it. Will have to order it I guess. I really want the white one and the blushing one. Very pretty!
Those are so neat, Diane. I love the white one..it's really pretty, and that one that was reaching for the sky was so cute!! I might just try some of these someday. You do make it look easy! I'll probably want to get me a heat mat first though. Your greenhouse just takes my breath away. It's getting so beautiful in there now. :)
Thank you for the video. It had lots of great information that I was looking for to grow this beautiful vine. So awesome to see them all in bloom later on and see the georgous white. Enjoyed your video over morning coffee before planting. I tried before but I didn't keep them warm enough. Now I know what to do 👍 Diane was my mother's name. Thanks again for the great video! Liked and subscribed!
Hi Tara, thanks for sharing..I am happy the video helped you... that is great.. thanks for subbing .. appreciate it... good luck growing you will do great... I also have heard some people soak the seed before planting it may help as well.. 👍☀❤
thank you.. they will grow up it just get them started.. I put some in pots with trellises too and I have to get them started and wind them around once in awhile.. there is many annual vines that are nice with color all season... hyacinth vine, moonflowers, morning glories.. clematis , trumpet vines are hardy not sure where you are located thou..
well you have a shorter growing season. so you may be wishful thinking..:) however I would maybe try the annual exotic love vine they seem to like cooler temps..
Great video Diane as always. Do you think that if I planted them in the ground next to an arbor that they would grow up the arbor or are they more a hanging basket kind of a plant? I have an arbor that is in a fairly sunny spot and I am trying to figure out the best plant to grow on it. What kind of plant would you recommend?
Wow thank you so much for all your great suggestions, Diane. Those all sound really good. I am north of the border in a cool zone 3. But if I try and stick to annuals I think I should be okay. Do you think any of them would climb up and cover the arbor or am I asking too much from an annual plant?
Great video. So do you cut off one of the seedlings when you transplant or separate them? I have a plant out from and have been taking seeds from it every year but I can never make them grow from those seeds. I wonder why? What do you think?
I just found you while looking for information on these vines. Inhave been enjoying your videos. I have a pack of seeds and though I would love for them wrap around a post in my yard. I wanted to know if they get out of hand similar to morning glory.
Hi Severen, they can in some areas... but not thinking they will self seed like some morning glories do..the vine can grow pretty fast in the right conditions.. enjoy..❤
how many of each seedlings went into each hanging basket of that size ? will they cascade down from the basket or so they need something to wrap around and go upward? I have yellow star seedlings growing now, and I would love to learn how to get some in hanging baskets and some in pots growing up a wall. Will it grow up a wall or will it go only as high as it has something to wrap around? The white ones look so good that you have, so pretty! Thank you for any tips you can give me
gosh not sure I remember but would say 3-5 plants.. I usually trim them a few times so they come in fuller.. you will have to start them up anything.. yes it will have to wrap around something to do well.. they love water and sun..😁☀👍
I'm overwintering mine because they didn't get mature in time to bloom out doors for me so how do I keep them happy inside there in a sunny west facing windo but getting so tall i have growing up bamboo stick right now is that ok and how do I do i transfer from the one pot to a hanging planter once its time to bring them back outside in the summer? Should I cut them back before I transplant them?
Nice flowers! How is their cut life, though? I'm looking at bringing my lei game back and am looking for flowers that can hold their color and strength when I thread them into a lei/garland. Are they strong petals?
Black-eyed Susan vine is only reliably perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. It is usually grown as an annual, although it has been known to over-winter in temperate climates during very mild winters
Hi there! Love the content of your channel. I'm a beginner gardener myself and found these vines at my local nursery. I was curious about the soil mixture you used? Perlite and..? As for the heating mat and germination time, I don't have a mat so is there something else I could use instead to start them indoors? Thanks!!
don't have the exact time frame, but don't put them outside until you have warmer nights and days.. free from frost.. that is if you get frost in your area..
no I just separate and transplant give them a rest without sunlight and all usually goes well..:) well the seeds just may not be viable or sterile. test germ them to see for sure.. I haven't taken seeds from a plant..
Hi, Diane! I have three seedlings started. I'd like for them to be bushy but I'm not sure I can achieve a bushy look unless they are all grown together to climb up my light post or will one suffice? I'd like to plant them in different places but only if they will get bushy, otherwise, I suppose I will plant them all together to climb the light post. Also, do they need pinched so that they will branch? Thanks!!
Hi Diane I purchased one of these in a pot what does small trellis it was beautiful to begin with but now it's dying away I have it on my front porch which gets morning sun. But it looks to me like it is dying it's getting sparse with the leaves the leaves look pale. I give it a good soak of water everyday am I watering too much? Thanks.
not sure Lisa, check your soil and see if it feels too wet .. my experience thou they love water when growing.. as long as you have good drainage.. check for spider mites.. I have noticed they do get those some times..
+Crystal Scott sometimes I don't separate them , but carefully it can be done by separating the soil and the roots.. I take the trays off the mats as soon as the seeds germinate, otherwise they will become leggy too fast.. and you want short and stout plants
+Lana L , I don't remember for sure this has been a while ago.. grow time will vary , will depend on where you grow them as with me indoors and then to the greenhouse it speeds up growing much more.. all you can do is plant some and keep track.. I believe I started them in January for baskets I know they were vining already in April... maybe sooner.. just haven't grown these for quite some time..
I suppose they can, I mean I buy plugs and I believe those have been started by cuttings.. I haven't done it though so no experience .. some may produce seed but no experience there either..
If I am doing small hanging baskets that can be transplanted by the customer, how many plants do you recommend. I larger baskets that you showed at the end, how many plants do they contain. I now why I have not been successful in the past - no heat mat to aid germination!
HI Joanne, as far as how many plants it can depend.. like how long are you thinking of growing the plants in pots before selling? I started them in these pots probably mid March of the season.. I usually did 3 plants in a 10" hanging basket and maybe 4-5 in a 12" I allowed a long growing period and they got pretty big by mid May .. hope that helps!
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the average last frost, and plant outside once all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 50F. Soaking the seeds in warm water overnight before sowing will speed germination.
Re: Blackeyed Susan Vines Video-- Why do you cover the tray of seeds? When do you remove the cover? I just received my seeds today from Amazon and getting ready to follow your instruction video. Should I soak these seeds overnight? Thanks!
Tommie Shelby you can soak them to get them to germ faster, some seeds do better with darkness , some don't care.. I remove the cover when I see many germinating..
hope you are having a great day!
The leaves on mine are drooping and falling off. The pot is small (about six inches tall and six inches in diameter) and the plant is about two feet high. The drooping leaves on the plant are not brittle. I water it 2-3 times a week. Am I over watering?
Love the orange thunbergia! Hope you are doing well, Diane:)

I'm a 16 year old boy and your vids have really inspired me to start growing more of my own plants. Thank you and I will be looking for new videos.
You must be a 27 year old man now, hope you are still enjoying your black eyed Susans and life treated you well 😂
I was wondering where @paa360 is now!
wow did not know there was so many types of Black Eye Susens thanks for sharing :)

yes they are very prolific ..
I have several in my garden, here in Johannesburg South Africa they grow over 20 feet long in fact they can become quite invasive. They flower 365 days a year in my garden and are simply gorgeous.
thank you.. thanks for coming by.. probably boring to some but it gets the point across and shows how easy it is to grow..
I just bought some BES seeds for my mom, she's been wanting a planter box for next to the front steps, this is going to be so perfect! Thank you for introducing me to this plant!!!
I’m going to try this vine this summer. I’m a total beginner and this video was so helpful! Thank you!
I love these too the humming birds go nuts over them.
yes.. most people think of the upright plant or wildflower ones.. this is totally different plant , a great vine..:)
Very nice plants will definately try them this summer thanks for the introduction to them. Love the videos very informative
Thank you for replying to all my messages :) I'm thinking I'll start over and Plant the leggy ones in the backyard somewhere...:)
Wow those are beautiful flowers. I really like them they are great. Great video!!! Happy gardening!!!!
Thanks for the advise! I love to trim and tie plants into spirals or other odd shapes kind of like bonsai. It makes any common plant a little different then every other one around. Catches peoples eyes to.
How many transplants did you put in each hanging basket?
lookin' good !

thank you , glad you stopped by..
thank you I thought I wouldn't find anything about this flower.
I got the seeds that were a mix of all 3 from burpee. I hope it works

usually 3--5 depending on how big the basket is..;)

If you can't find any I have some in my website in my store Lois... I am really liking the white/dark eye. course I love them all..
you will love it but fair warned it can be aggressive in some areas.. but you can always trim them back..

I been planting many of these yellow orange & white, would like to get the pink ones but are hard to find.
Thanks for sharing ❤ mine has not sprouted yet
they can take a bit to germinate!
How many plants do you put in an 8” basket?
Thank you 😊
Can you plant the seeds in the actual hanging basket you are going to use?
how many of each seedlings went into each hanging basket of that size ? will they cascade down from the basket or so they need something to wrap around and go upward? I have yellow star seedlings growing now, and I would love to learn how to get some in hanging baskets and some in pots growing up a wall. aren't they great! boy I have been vacant from watching your videos , but I'll be back..
anything to attract hummers .. :)
Hi Diane! Love your videos. I'm wondering how many plants you put in the hanging basket? Thanks!
Jenn S Hi I believe there was 3-4 plants usually , they are aggressive so watch out.. LOL thank you for stopping!
you should give it a try..
Nice flowers! How is their cut life, though? I'm looking at bringing my lei game back and am looking for flowers that can hold their color and strength when I thread them into a lei/garland. Are they strong petals?
Not sure these would be what are looking for..
I'm plant froom seeds cannot grow.what's problem???
Great video . How long was the germination time please ? 💐🐝🦋
HI Deb, this has been so many years ago.. sorry... if not in the video I don't remember..
Is it a perennial?

commercial promix, peat perlite and sometimes bark.. warm window
How old of seedlings of the black eyed Susan’s to transplant outside? I have sprouts that are 18 days old.
don't have the exact time frame, but don't put them outside until you have warmer nights and days.. free from frost.. that is if you get frost in your area..
no I just separate and transplant give them a rest without sunlight and all usually goes well..:) well the seeds just may not be viable or sterile. test germ them to see for sure.. I haven't taken seeds from a plant..
R these perennials? Can they grow in Zone 4?
Hi Joyce , only as a annual.. in your zone
Hi, Diane, loved your video!! When can we get the seeds after they bloom?
Mati Balaguer I would check later in the season and yes well after they bloom..
I like to pinch these back as well ... helps them come in with more stems and blooms.. good luck!
I have noticed they do get those some times..
when ya put 2 seeds in one cell...how do ya seperate them?also how long should ya leave them on the heating mat?
+Crystal Scott sometimes I don't separate them , but carefully it can be done by separating the soil and the roots.. I take the trays off the mats as soon as the seeds germinate, otherwise they will become leggy too fast.. and you want short and stout plants
Can they go in pots and grow downward?
yes they can grow downward
what date did you plant the seeds? I am super curious on the length of time it takes to germinate and start climbing.
But do you pinch back the seedlings?
I used to cut back the vine, yes.. then it will bush out on both sides of the stem... makes a nicer plant..
Can they grow from cuttings? Does it produce a seed pod?
I suppose they can, I mean I buy plugs and I believe those have been started by cuttings.. I haven't done it though so no experience .. some may produce seed but no experience there either..
thank you.. :)
Do these seeds need to be nicked and soaked first?
I usually just soak mine..
If I am doing small hanging baskets that can be transplanted by the customer, how many plants do you recommend. I larger baskets that you showed at the end, how many plants do they contain. I now why I have not been successful in the past - no heat mat to aid germination!

how many of the cells do you put into each basket to make them full? and to not overdo it?
Following
I usually put 3-4 plants to a 12 inch pot , this was when I was growing for the greenhouse customers.. it makes a really nice full pot over time..
When do you start them indoors? I'm zone 6a and this is my first time growing them.
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the average last frost, and plant outside once all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 50F. Soaking the seeds in warm water overnight before sowing will speed germination.
Mine have stopped blooming, why.? It is in the sun.
have you fertilized?
Re: Blackeyed Susan Vines Video-- Why do you cover the tray of seeds? When do you remove the cover? I just received my seeds today from Amazon and getting ready to follow your instruction video. Should I soak these seeds overnight? Thanks!
Tommie Shelby you can soak them to get them to germ faster, some seeds do better with darkness , some don't care.. I remove the cover when I see many germinating..
Thanks so much. I've had good luck, most of my seeds germinated. Soaking them in water REALLY seemed to speed up the process. thanks again!
Pink & white Thumbergias Black eyed suzans are hard to find all nurseries don't carry them.
try seeds online if you want to venture that way.. :)
