作者查爾斯奧斯汀麥爾斯（1868 - 1946）放棄藥劑師之職終生從事聖樂工作，此詩是在讀約翰福音廿章，彷彿自己親臨其境，看到門徒到空墳墓看主的情形，頓時有靈感寫下花園與主同行的經歷，他領悟到與主同行不限於二千多年前，而是信徒每天的生活，這首聖詩「在花園裏」在當時被譽為僅次於「古舊十架」的流行聖詩。
獨步徘徊在花園裏，玫瑰花尚有晶瑩朝露，忽有溫柔聲，傳入我耳中，乃是神子主耶穌。
I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses, And the voice I hear falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses.
祂與我同行又與我共話，對我說我單屬於祂；與主在園中心靈眞快樂，前無人曾經歷過。
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own; And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.
我主慈聲何等甜蜜，小雀鳥停歌屏息傾聽，主使我聽見，天上美妙音，叫我心快樂甦醒。
He speaks, and the sound of His voice, Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me, Within my heart is ringing.

「祂與我同行，又與我共話」耶穌門徒的經歷不單只發生在二千多年前，同樣現今信徒每天都可以有這經歷。
天色將暗夜幕漸垂，我甚願與主留在園中，但主命我去，懇切呼召我，要我心向祂順從。
I’d stay in the garden with Him, Though the night around me be falling, But He bids me go; through the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling.

In 1892, Charles Austin Miles (1868 - 1946) abandoned his career as a pharmacist to become a writer of gospel songs. One day in 1912, he read about disciples visiting the tomb of Jesus in John 20. Miles imagined that he was present with them in the garden, witnessing the wonderful event. Reverently he thought, “This is not an experience limited to a happening almost 2,000 years ago. It is the daily companionship with the Lord that makes up the Christian’s life.” With this inspiration, he wrote a poem and later a musical setting. This song has now become extremely well-known, “In the Garden.”
