- Another remake has come and gone. Things are relatively similar, but there was something that bugged me about live-action Ursula with regard to her plan involving Ariel.
Unity Reviews and Analysis video on The Little Mermaid (2023):

It's contrived nonsense. Making Ariel more interested in the human world instead of "just going up for some boy" (Halle's words) creates a major plot hole. There was really no point for Ursula to even make Eric falling for her part of the deal. She should've just offered to give her legs for three days with a caveat being something else.
That's what happens when you try and sanitize away a problem that wasnt there. It was just bad storytelling.
y’all are thinking about it way too deep. like it’s just a kids movie. it’s really not that deep for u to be calling this shit “contrived nonsense”😂😂
@@seandalo "it's just a kids movie. It's just wizards and Lazer swords. It's just some dumb politician. It's just some made up religion."
You can say that about ANYTHING that someone thinks is important. That's a weak argument.
If it were anything you cared about for whatever reason, you'd be triggered too. But...thanks for weighing in?
@@Rhamsody my pleasure, and no i would not be triggered because i’ve been a fan of the little mermaid since day 1. Went to literally like three broadway shows goo
Disney is just plain Woke, they are destroying all their classics. It's pretty obvious they are just making sure women are superior to men. Women don't need help nor can they be saved by a man, and by no means will they be love struck by a boy, noooooo. That's why she swam up by herself, took her own voice back, and killed Ursula herself 😂😅🤦
Taking away the contract aspect makes the switch between Ariel and triton not believable. Yes, blood pact, but even then, triton never gave Ursula his blood, so ursula still had power over ariel
she wanted power period lmao and triton was already giving that up
@@seandalo yes, but her leverage used to be that Ariel was binded by the contract. If they had shown how now triton was switching places, then yes it still works
@@SP-ny6pk All she needed was ariel to be binded by a deal that she would keep forgetting about so ursula could get triton to give up his prized possession for his daughter. triton certainly didn’t need to have three days to kiss eric
@@seandalo it’s not about the 3 days, it’s about triton wanting to save his daughter. With the contract, triton taking Ariel’s place she was free but he was doomed, but when Ursula dies, the contract is void and everything returns. With the blood pact, no exchange was seen (of triton giving Ursula his blood) and then he’s killed. So when Ursula dies, there was no explanation as to how triton was revived except “it’s magic”. If triton was capable of this, he could just as easily revived Ariel. That’s what I mean by saying the contract has a stronger stand then the blood pact
@@SP-ny6pk it still works out, and luckily covers up the ariel’s writing plothole
You got me to consider something important; and that's the idea that Ariel should have been the one curious for a kiss, not Eric. Considering how eager and unabashed she is to learn about the human world, it should have been her who learned to temper her curiosity and consider the actual consequences or meaning of a kiss. Not the weird bashful pull-away. For a real feminist move, it should have been her acting on her feelings of wanting to kiss Eric, realizing he wanted to learn more about her, and then slowly learning the context of going in for a kiss and her feelings behind it.
It could have been gorgeous.
In the live-action remake. Ursula in Vanessa's form wasn't even brainwashing Eric, unlike the animation. Eric is the one asking where is Ariel and concerns for her even don't want her to go away when he's with Vanessa. If he's undermind control, no way this is allowed to happen. Even if try to argue siren song from Ariel, Vanessa is not using Ariel's voice so she's clearly not doing that to Eric.
Eric's character is destroyed by abandoning Ariel for Vanessa immediately to hold an engagement party with Vanessa for no reason
Ursula adding that memory loss to the spell is incredibly random and wasnt needed lol
it makes sense if she wanted to win
It also remove the "why didn't she write" plothole so many fans have pointed out.
Yeah Kiss the Girl should have been Kiss the Boy, a song trying to remind Ariel what she needs to Kiss Eric, what's worse is that by having Sebastion sing kiss the girl despite Ariel being the one pulling away and he's still singing kiss the girl it's enforcing the very thing hollywood wrongfully interpreted in the original, it's gone from "not asking for consent" to forcing Eric on Ariel after she said no.
It's Wonder Woman 1984 all over again.
Yes. It's so very dumb.
The 1st one gave her agency. She knew what she wanted and was going after it.
They were one anothers True Love. Of course she wants to kiss him. She just happens to also need it to stay human.
She does run up to kiss him after Triton turns her. I didn't see either of them "asking for consent" there. 🙄
Ursula was right about one thing. Body Language does speak loud and clear.
That would have been a clever twist. You’re hired.
I think what they should have tried was for Ursula to simply give Ariel Legs in exchange not for her voice, but instead for her Memories, like Ariel would completely forget her entire life as a Mermaid, her father, her sisters, how to sing, being a princess, everything about herself, even the fact that she made a deal with Ursula, then Eric would find her & believe that she has amnesia, feels sorry for her & tries to help her out of the kindness of his heart, and Ariel would basically be the same as before, but could now talk, yet without her memories she wouldn't know what to talk about, and Eric would still not be able to tell that Ariel actually is the girl he's looking for due to how Awful Ariel now sings, yet the two of them could still develop a strong relationship with each other without without if feeling like it's being forced upon them, and Ursula could use Ariel's Memories to sing just like her & breaking the necklace would restore Ariel's memories & she would then sing just has she could before, and she would remember everything and tell Eric that it was her that saved him that day, then the film would play out like before, it just seems like That would have helped make things just a tad bit better.
The more I consider going to see this remake, the more I realize I just need to rewatch the original classic. The more I see the old footage with the new the more this seems like I’m trying to choose between a strawberry daiquiri made with real strawberries versus a brand new recipe that uses only artificial strawberry flavorant and red dye. And the red dye isn’t even all that red.
So why did Ursula change into Vanessa if she had already put an amnesia spell on Ariel. Her plan would’ve been fool proofed.
How does her plan make no sense she says it every 20 min?
I don’t get how someone thinks the memory loss spell in the live action hurts the plot. It actually makes more sense, because Ariel would be putting out all the stops to seduce the prince. A boat flip wouldn’t stop her from kissing the prince immediately after they got on land. It was actually a fix.
It needs to be True Loves Kiss. It has to be genuine from both sides. She isn't just supposed to jump him.
Taking away her memory takes away her agency.
They were one anothers True Love. Why would she not want to kiss him?
In the 1st she isn't solely focused on seducing him. She's overwhelmed by excitement at getting to experience all of these things she's always wantes to experience.
He is the one pulling away because he is still hung up on his dream girl. That love at first meeting that they both felt. That's part of the Disney magic. Finding your other half to spend your life with.
Kiss The Girl is all about putting Eric in the right head space to give in to his feelings and kiss her. It may not have worked in that moment because he still had his dream girl in his head. I don't know if the magic would recognize that or not.
Eric is a romantic and believes in True Love. He believes he met his True Love and is confused by these feelings and pull he feels towards Ariel.
Everyone is telling him the dream girl was a hallucination though. He gives in to his feelings for Ariel and throws away his flute representing his dream girl.
Then Ursula puts him under a magic spell that turns him into a zombie.
The contract protecting Ursula and reducing Ariel to a sea polyp makes way way way more sense.
Triton, King of the Sea, fried in a second by some eels. 🙄
It was an issue in the first animated film because that was the primary purpose of her hanging out with the Prince and it was kind of creepy in the original source. The memory loss took away the creep factor.
It’s a kid movie lol you’re looking for something to be mad at 😂
Seriously. The main actress was very good. I haven’t seen a single professional critic complain about her performance.
The live action made more sense than the cartoon in many ways.
he's allowed to express his opinion on a movie lol
