    Thank you! Life sometimes gets in the way of our hobbies. For that reason, more than any other, I take all of these Hoya videos. I know that at some point, I will have to give up many of these plants, and at least I will have the videos to remember them by!

    Most Hoyas are very similar to Orchids in their maintenance needs. They are epiphytes and want to be potted up in a very light quick draining potting mix. All of that being said obovata is not a difficult Hoya to grow. Let it lightly dry out between waterings, and then soak it well. Give it good light, and it should be happy and do well for you for many years!

      @bernadettelopez7225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you let it dry until the leaves are wrinkly? I’ve watched most of You Tube Plant influencers who do the “taco test” waiting for the soil to dry plus wait for the leaves to get soft. Is that good?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bernadettelopez7225 I have just never been able to hold off on watering that long. So I can't really say. I do suffer a lot of root rot issues though, but have a fair amount of success as well. You can go too far watering too much, but you can also go too far by not watering enough.

    Hi Doug! How are you?
    Absolutely gorgeous!
    I have 2 small cuttings. I hope in 5 years, it looks half as nice as your's.
    A leaf broke off in shipping. I put it also in water and hopefully will root and I can pot up with the other 2 cuttings.
    Thank you again for your help.
    Enjoy,

    I love obovata . I have 3 at home. I was so happy to find out that they can also be found in Vietnam hehehe . I have always wanted a Hoya from my birthplace. I can’t believe I have one all this time. They all have peduncles but they are not doing anything yet. Hehehe maybe soon when the weather warming up. Wow this was 8 years ago . I wonder if you still have it now. Time flies. We always have pictures videos and memories to remember by 😜

      I can look back at my life through the videos of plants that I have kept over the years. No, I gave that plant away years ago to a hairdresser in town who had it in her front window for years after that. Not enough room or time to keep all the plants that I would like to have.

    Janet, Your are right; Hoya obovata is a great plant! I do try to give all of my Hoyas a shower at least twice a year. As they get larger, it becomes more difficult - I do like shiny leaves! I use granulated MSU fertilizer for well water on all of my Hoyas at a rate of 1 teaspoon per gal. in the summer and a half teaspoon per gal. in the winter. You can find the fertilizer at First Rays Online, but there are other good fertilizers. I just happen to use MSU.

    Came to this video to admire . I just trellised my huge obovata tonight. I do have a question...I have two obovatas and one is dark green with thick raised leaves with lots of splash it's on a trellis as well. My other was purchased as a hanging basket with thinner leaves and lighter in color....I'm more attracted to the darker green leaves on Hoyas, how can I achieve that with this one?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, time sure does fly by, I can't believe that it has almost been 10 years since I posted that video. I have never had much luck darkening light green leaves, or making chlorotic leaves look good again. I too am much more attracted to leaves that are a nice green color. Wish I could be of help, but if you ever find an answer, please pass it on, because I would like to know as well!

      Doug what are your thoughts on planting Hoya in plastic V terra cotta? I thought I remembered you saying plastic was better but I’m recently seeing people putting them in terra cotta. Thanks

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amyl.shultz1121 For me terra cotta just did not work well at all. The pot dries the delicate hair roots right out; they also stick to to clay making it hard to repot. Also, I can tell from years of experience when a plant needs to be watered by hefting the pot, I lose that ability with clay. I love the looks of a Hoya in clay, but did not work well for me, and many others as well.

    GORGEOUS gorgeous plant. One question. Mine grows very well.up to a certain point to when the leaves start looking withered like they're not getting adequate water. I further observation the stems dry out at the soil line. Is it the medium i use that causes that? I have the same issues with my H. fungii and also the carnosa varieties. I use basic orchid mix with potting mix and perlite.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jason, I think you diagnosed your issue pretty well. It is possible to have a too loose and chunky mix where it won't hold adequate moisture and the leaves and vines will shrivel. Although the same condition can indicate roots that are in trouble from too much moisture, but in your case I think the medium is not holding enough water. A lot of gorgeous obovata, and carnosa have been grown in plain peat-based potting mix with no amendments like perlite and orchid mix.

    I have a Hoya obavata that came in the mail during cold temps I planted it right away, my leaves don’t look shiny like yours just no shine. It’s still green do you think it will bounce back??? Or what do you suggest

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will definitely bounce back. Also, the older leaves of Hoya obavata tend to lose their shine. The newer growth is all nice an shiny. The older the leaf, usually the duller it will get. I'm sure that once your plant gets established and new growth begins, you plant will look much more the way my plant looked here. I gave this plant away probably four years ago, it ended up in a Hairdresser's window where it has flowered for many years, but all of the leaves on it are completely a dull and flat with no shine.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi Fiona, I'm thrilled that you like my videos! I have a lot of fun putting them together. I came up with a 10 best list a couple of years ago for growers in the North, and will paste it here. The only thing I would change is to replace Hoya serpens with a much easier to keep Hoya bella.
      Hoya cumingiana - one of my first Hoyas; it grows rapidly, is easy to bloom, fragrant, and can easily be shaped by tying to a trellis or topiary.
      Hoya obovata - large, tough, beautiful leaved, plant that blooms within two to three years; a great specimen plant that needs a substantial trellis.
      Hoya lobbii - I love this Hoya! Grows shrub like, will turn into a beautiful specimen plant with age. Blooms in a wide range of colors depending upon clone and growing conditions.
      Hoya carnosa - Great heirloom plant that is very tough, and will provide you with huge numbers of umbels of blooms at 3 to 4 years of age with good light. Can live in the same pot without transplanting for many years. Many cultivars to choose from.
      Hoya kerrii - The ‘Sweetheart Hoya’ Lovely heart-shaped leaves on a very tough plant that will bloom copiously for you if given some outside time in the summer.
      Hoya calycina - Soft pubescent leaves; blooms in the fall with very fragrant large red and white flowers. Look for the Stargazer clone if you can find it - will bloom the first year from cutting.
      Hoya nummularoides - Outstanding plant for the hanging basket, tough, easy care, and will bloom every fall with umbels of incredibly fragrant blooms.
      Hoya lacunosa - Not the easiest plant on my list to get through the winter with in the north, but worth the effort. There are many clones of this plant available; my favorite is ‘Royal flush.’ A well grown plant will reward you with umbels of perfumed flowers.
      Hoya serpens - I hesitated to add this plant, but for growers in the north, who don’t keep their home overly hot and dry, this Hoya is worth trying. One of the most beautiful of the small growers that will reward you with outstanding perfumed blooms at 3-4 years of age. Mist it frequently.
      Hoya pubicalyx - Everyone needs one of these plants. There are many outstanding clones available all of which will start having large showy blooms at about 2 years of age.
      Hope this helps.
      Doug

Large baskets have always been commonly available around here. Good luck with your collecting, and I'm sure your plants will thrive.

    Doug I think this is what I have. It's aprox 6 yrs old. it was given to me as a slip 6 yrs ago, it began blooming last August, and has even bigger blossoms this yr. I only give it a small amt of water infrequently, and when I have fertilized it I used a couple of drops of Shultz African Violet food. Not sure what it is supposed to get, but it seems happy.
    I noticed the thick nector dripping off last year, it's very sweet and think. I hope it's not poisonous (I'm still hear). How do I know for sure what I have?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adrienne Pereira Hi Adrienne, unless your Hoya has been treated with a systemic insecticide, the nectar that drips is not poison. I just tasted some the other day, and it was super sweet! The leaves of Hoya obovata are pretty much unmistakable being large and round. Some varieties have silver splashes like mine and others are just green. The flowers all look the same, and they are pretty heavy nectar drippers so that is probably what you have. You can try Googling the plant; there should be tons of photos that will help you ID the plant. It sounds like you are taking care of the plant very well, as it would not flower if you were not.

If I were to do it again, I would remove both Hoya calycina and Hoya serpens as they are just to difficult for the average grower to keep happy. When this plant went into the room that you see it in, it was already full grown, but flowered profusely in this south window for a number of years, as the days got longer in the spring. The room was not humid at all, and the plant was about six inches away from the glass.

    can you show us how you wash your hoyas when they are messy with nectar after blooming

      Lots of warm water sprays using the shower, and if that is not enough I have to attack the leaves with a warm wet cloth or sponge.

      Hi Phillip, It won't take you that long to update. Hoya obovata is a pretty quick, easy grower. It is also one of the best Hoyas for people new to the hobby to start with - Great choice!

    oh, and mine does have spots on the leaves, they are in a south window as I don't have any north facing windows with sun. I have just let it meannder all around the window as it likes.

      I gave that plant away probably about 8 years ago, and last I knew it is in the window of a hair salon on Main Street in Burlington, VT. Too many plants and too little space!

      Kally, there are so many beautiful Hoyas with gorgeous foliage. A couple of my favorites as far as leaves are concerned are: Hoya sp. Gunung Gading, Hoya clemensiorum, Hoya sp. Maenam,, and Hoya waymaniae.

      Doug Chamberlain it's my first order from them & they look awesome! I ordered the obovata, fitchii, & wibergiae 😊 The fitchii is a bit small, but the wibergiae came with 3 plants in the pot 👍🏼The obovata is bigger than I thought it would be 😍

    So, you use orchid fertilizer? Because of your answer, I checked to see if hoyas were related to orchids, but an online article in the NY Times said they're in the succulent family. Is that true? That's surprising, & if true, it might account for their hardiness.''
    I was given an orchid & no matter how attentive I was, it died:(

    Key words. Plant is near a South facing window, so it gets full sun!

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

      It definitely did get a lot of sunshine in the winter time on that windowsill!

      I gave my Hoya obovata away a few years ago so sadly I have none to sell. Unfortunately I can't keep them all!
