Correction: The gavel doesn't hit the lectern, but rather a small block of wood called a "sounding block" First, because it's usually specially made of hard-wood which gives a louder sound, but second, to protect the underlying table so guys like McHenry don't totally destroy the place with his mini-Mjölnir

    • @vforwombat9915
      @vforwombat9915 ปีที่แล้ว +48

but is the sounding block part of the lectern?
is a horn a part of a car when it is installed?
is it even installed, or does it just lie on top, waiting for one errant hit at the wrong angle to send it flying into the face of some innocent lectern bystander?
at what point do we define 'lectern?' which parts of it are lectern and which parts are not?
this is a real rabbit hole you have opened up here, Strawberry.

@@annamarie1942 " the sounding block is not a part of the lectern'
when a judge pounds his gavel, or a speaker pounds the____,
what do ppl say they pound?
they say the lectern or the ...whatever the judge's thing is called, my mind is going blank on this.
they never say they pound the sounding block.
now, we cold get into colloquial versus technical usage and semantics.
this is a hive of scum and jackals, after all.
or we can discuss if colloquial usage, which is clearly implying said sounding block is part of said object it is resting on, irregardless of whether it is attached or not, is incorrect.
the problem with calling colloquial usage incorrect is ofc that words' meanings are defined by usage.
if 99-99.999% of people de facto identify the sounding block as part of the lectern, then it becomes part of the lectern semantically.
i TOLD you this is a rabbit hole.
      you followed the rabbit.

If you could give a shout out to the people providing them, that would be great.
I keep nagging big channels to include official subtitles all the time, so that people with hearing impairments or foreign speakers can enjoy the content.
And it's so wonderful to find a show that has official subtitles, even for background noises and they are on time and not delayed by 20 seconds.
It really means a lot to me.

I'm so glad that I was able to be part of corrections from episode 1. you can go back and watch everything, (even if you had the 5-month writer's strike break to catch up) but it's not the same as being able to watch every Friday after a week of monologues and closer looks fresh on your minds, and then tune in to corrections. It is a finely tuned art of correcting, callbacks, and gags from previous corrections.. my favorite part of Fridays. It's not for everyone and if you don't like it, then make like Wil E. Coyote hitting the ground and just don't watch it..

Correction: 17:56 Venom when ingested, in most cases, is not poisonous. When eaten, the enzymes in the digestive system denature the proteins in venom before they can reach the rest of the body, vs injected, where the body has to circulate the bloodstream to remove the harmful proteins, allowing it to do damage. For Platypuses, the toxin solution has 3 main component classes: DLP’s, NGF’s, and CNP’s which are normally digestible. Eating venom however, is still not advised due to the risk of bypassing the digestive tract through an ulcer or abrasion in the tissue. Also large quantities could overwhelm the digestive tracts ability to handle the venom, but this is the case for many non poisonous things e.g. water. THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR ALL VENOMS, PLEASE CONSULT EXPERTS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO CONSUME A HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE.

EDIT: Added the "usually" bit, not only because it's more accurate, but because they apparently have one that isn't round in the House Chamber currently.

I love how one moment Seth is ranting about how "fun" it is to make a show for jackals, but then the minute someone insults it he steps up to defend it. Genuinely heartwarming. And in that spirit... Correction: For "Doth that make sense?", you pronounced "Doth" like "Dawth" when the proper Shakespearean pronunciation is actually "Duth" (like in "does" or "duh").

Who in the 21st Century determines what 'proper' Shakespearean pronunciation is? Shakespearean jackals, of course!

I think in that case, the sentence should be “Doth that make thenthe?”.

Started laughing at 15:10 self deprecating. Spent the next 3 minutes laughing tears. This episode wins all of the episodes. Not just of corrections, but of all the episodes. Of everything.

CORRECTION:Venom doesn't become poison if ingested. Venoms are specific chemicals that are evolved to immobilise or kill via a specific chemical reaction. Ingestion places the venom in the digestive tract where it will be broken down like other parts of the prey species. The venom would need to be also toxic to harm the imbiber. That, however, would make,e it a toxin, not a poison.

Correction for one of these corrections: Not all gulls are herring gulls. There's a lot of species of gull, from tiny little ringbilled gulls and mew gulls to great big herring gulls and glaucous gulls. There are even many gull hybrids, such as the Olympic Gull found in coastal western Canada, which are part herring gull and part several other species of gull. Also, seagull is a perfectly valid slang term for gull, since you often see them by the sea, and everyone knows what "seagull" means.
Did the ornithologist mean that the specific gull shown was a herring gull, or were they not, in fact, a gull expert and more focused on, say, passerines?
Disclaimer: I'm not an ornithologist myself, but I do have autistic perseverations on birds, taxonomy, and etymology. And cats.

      I know, right?!
I was here to say that. There are dozens of Gull species that lay people refer to as seagulls. (my favorite is the Bonaparte's Gull. They're cute as a button.)
I don't know what that corrector was, but he sure wasn't an ornithologist.
