Had a N/A 2.5 for years I know a ton of tricks with them. They run waay better with the stock intake and as for the idle try taking the idle air control sensor on top of the throttle body out and brake clean the crap out of it should help. They're fun to beat on and don't make enough power to hurt themselves I'll be really suprise if you manage to blow it up, I flat foot shifted mine on the rev limiter every day and it never skipped a beat.

I think there are adapter plates for BRZ seats to fit in the GC. My buddy has done a few GC builds. If you're feeling really fancy you can even get the seats with the built in airbags and wire them in to work.
Put 15 to 20 percent Lucas oil stabilizer in it and see if the oil consumption slows or stops. Great test of that product. I've seen it improve engine operation and make less valve train noise.
I would like to see the FA20 rebuild all alone. Just because after my IAG longblock is finished tuning, I'll have my stock FA20 at home to fumble with in my free time. I'd love to build it up someday.

The drivers seat is high because it's running a seat from what looks like a 2004 WRX. I had some 05 STI seats in mine and while the brackets do "technically" fit and bolt in it makes the seats sit way higher in the car. Something about the bracket design between the seats. I love the look and feel of the WRX seats, but you'd likely need to modify the brackets to use the stock ones or something.
If those are the GD wrx seats there should be a handle on the left of the driver seat to lower the seat a bit. It should be even with the passenger seat
I have to say one thing abt ag1, if you have a sensitive stomach, don’t try and down a glass full first try, it came back out like a volcano burst. And about na’s since I’m starting to see with 182k og miles, oil burning is starting to come more often but they are allot of fun nonetheless

The IAC usually has an adjustment and the TPS but it might be different on the RS than my GC it has an ej22e in it so might be a little different. Just an idea to keep it going alittle longer or atleast idle alittle better , can wait to see what you plan on swapping. Keep up the great work!
turbo is intoxicating, makes it very hard to want to change that forumla, however, id be very interested to see something like a "procharger" type setup on the RS with whichever motor you decide to go with.

man... spend the $100 bucks on the RS for plugs, new valve cover and spark plug gaskets and maybe a little more on new ignition coil and wires and youll be good for awhile. i doubt it had head gasket issues, just dirty plugs and leaking into combustion chamber like you said...
Honestly I like the way it sounds, sounds like it probably has an ebay UEL header on it and ebay special cat back exhaust I would guess. My 07 sounds very similar with my ebay UEL, 05 cat section, and 2.5inch piping out the back, I love it. But I can't afford a turbo version so gotta enjoy what you can afford!
What about that green speed compliant WRX engine? It's already built and you already have it, unless it was sold in the background. I guess a full donor car would be good for various things like a trans, seats, etc. That aside, I was cruising some really nice twisty backroads on my way home this morning, and a blob wrx gave me the heads up on a cop doing radar down the street. I wasn't exactly speeding or anything & I have a radar detector, but it did give me the chance to drop 5mph or so to keep it safer. Props to that guy.

I'm not sure if it's been answered in the comments yet, but the seat height is weird because those are JDM WRX seats from a GD. There's no height adjustment on that side because it's the JDM Passenger side. You can cut the feet on the seat brackets. Or just get some JDM V1-5 seats (Which is the correct answer :)) I had JDM V4 WRX seats in my RSTI and have not had a comparable seat since. Even OEM Recaros (Although I haven't sat in a Sportster GT)

I have a complete stage 2+ tuff ej257 with 100mm forged platinum series piston forged manly rods with complete arp hard ware and case bolts ext 11mm head studs comes with a book from subaru genuine auto full inspection and pics of everything internal has 15k miles on it so had it professionally inspected and approved before I sold if interested I'll give ya a great deal can also come with brand new killer b pan and picup/tray kit brand new pro seal 100mm head gaskets I due have 1/2 headstud kit I was going to use but currently it still has the 11mm in it lmk
My old RS the valve cover and spark plug gaskets were so bad that it literally wouldn't run at all because the spark plug tube was completely full of oil lol
Make it a sleeper. Put an Sti badge or gaudy stickers, install high horsepower engine of your choice. Leave the body alone or make minor repairs here and there. When all done, watch peoples’ jaw drop when you smoke ‘em with your “shit box” !
On the real, clean the head and cylinder and maybe change the rings and the motor would last so long still. I have always been curious how much a stock sohc would hold?
Hey Tanner, question for you. I've got a 16 WRX and I'm looking at doing a turbo upgrade. I was looking at doing the SoCal Porting upgrade and I was just wondering if I should get theirs with the upgraded wastegate or skip it and get a new manifold with external wastegates?
Its funny, the 98 2.5 I had I intended to blow up as well. Just about as rough a shape as this plus about 1000% more rust. That MF ran solid and true (Slow) for 2 years. These old NA's are surprisingly stubborn.

I don't have the stock intake unfortunately but I'll give the IACV a cleaning and see if that helps a bit

when you were topping off the coolant and revved the engine, you could see your combustion gasses bubble out, head gasket gone for sure

IAC is the normal idle issues in these and upper 02 sensor can cause it too 🤷🏽♂️

Its more than basic maintance stuff like that. Already swapped plugs. Can almost gaurntee a comp test would come back low on it 😅

The hot air intake and the exhaust are the main problems here. Converting back to stock would probably fix it
If you put in some gc8 sti seats they look better and sit lower, the gd ones sit higher than the gc8 ones
