The title is a reference to Carter's autobiography, "Why Not the Best?", published in 1975 as a means of letting voters know who he was and his sense of values. @@spedrunI disagree. Not our best President, but underrated in my opinion. It was his fed chair pick who curbed inflation, it was just Reagan who was in office when it happened. The Camp David accords might be the single most significant peace treaty since WWII, and both Begin and Sadat credited Carter for his incredible effort in making it work. While he couldn’t make it public at the time, intelligence suggests that there would’ve been war if he didn’t give the Canal Zone back to the Panamanians. He protected more land than any other President with Alaska, and was the first world leader to acknowledge and take steps towards combating climate change. Iran was a fumble, I’ll agree there. But it’s notable that he got all the hostages back alive. He also changed the face of the judiciary, established the departments of energy and education as well as FEMA. He was not great a messaging, and his extreme focus on detail didn’t play well in public. But in hindsight he seems like a man who was able to peer over the horizon and make very significant choices for long term gain, even at the cost of short term pain and popularity

Jimmy Carter has said he’s only trying to make it to be able to vote for Harris against trump. He wants his last vote to be for the values he holds dear- democracy and integrity. That’s something I can admire. I heavily admire Jimmy Carter, and I’m very much to the left of him on the issues, but I’ve always looked up to him.
The world will be a worse place when he passes away. I hope to read his books at some point.
