Gene Gilliland is a super good guy and very knowledgeable on how things work (or doesn’t) concerning the health and well being of our water and fisheries and tournaments and what should or shouldn’t be done. Gene has gone way farther than people realize to being a huge proponent for our betterment. Oklahoma had gene for years and he was a big asset.

I have lake house at LOZ and fish there weekly. LOZ is a shadow of itself 10-15+ years ago when 5-7 lbers and up were common . 700 (SEVEN HUNDRED! )tournaments a year. disgusting! atleast get rid of live wells and do what kayakers do. I hate it.

Especially having the stupid a$$ big bass bash during spawn. WTF is the DNR doing allowing 2500 boats on the lake popping the bass on the beds like it was this year. The bass were all up on the beds locked in at LOZ during the big bass bash. That spawn was decimated this year.
That tournament right there shouldn’t be allowed during the spawn. Love LOZ but it’s taking a beating from crap like that.

Many of the guys on the team were majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife. Those same guys now work for the AGFC and the Black bass agency. I can tell you they care as much as Texas does! You would love it if you came to Arkansas and experienced Dardanelle, Ouachita, Bull Shoals, and a lot of the smaller gems like Lake Nimrod. Please keep the videos coming!

With conservation being talked about so much lately. I’ve been thinking maybe BASS should do catch , weight and release the first few days. Then do live weight ins after the field is cut. I’m thinking that would be the best of both worlds. Less fish going in live wells and then you still have a live weight in when you crown a champion.

    • @stonehorn4641
      @stonehorn4641 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Just let them keep their biggest fish to show at each weigh in. weigh the rest and release them.
It would easily be the best solution.
And you have 5x less fish stressed in livewells.

Be hard to get enough people to weigh at every event. That would only cover the elite series and in the long run that doesn’t even really matter. It’s 9 events a year with 100 guys. The bass nation events, opens and stuff are way more fish

I remember working an elite event in I think Wisconsin (they all run together) and the local DNR was filleting bass for “research” and to prove some sort of point regarding mortality rates. I still don’t understand the what they were doing but they were literally setup at the event as a vendor style booth knocking the sides off of ‘em but it was a bad look.

46:49 if you want a good substitute for using Mountain Dew, just use sugary water. Sweet tea is an excellent example of sugary water. Not highly acidic, not carbonated, and it tastes good and is better for you than Mountain Dew as well. Sugar is what helps coagulation of the blood the most from Mountain Dew. It helps thicken it. Corn syrup and water will do the same thing. Don’t wanna just choke them to death with straight corn syrup. But also having a little salt in your livewell will also help massively with coagulation. Sugary water is just sticky essentially. So it will stick to the fish long enough for the blood to coagulate and clot up on its own before it’s washed off. Tea also isn’t a major health risk for future consumption

  • @BenEaddy

The only problem with tournaments is that the larger fish are more subject to mortality because the larger fish are the ones that go to the weigh-in. This means the non-tournament angler like myself has less larger fish to fish for.

With as much as anglers are spending on electronics, why can't BASS & MLF require the boats to be epuiped with chillers and O2 bottles. Wouldn't this solve alot of the issues, I know what the chillers cost as I have opperated a fishtank that needed one to maintain the temp.? Can the organizations make thses rule change?

If people realize the effect social media has had on lakes. When a lake was on 25 years ago, it took months before word really got out and the army showed up. Now, with social media , the word goes around the world in one night. Add in a super effective harvester like FFS, and tge resource will never be the same. People getting them by the thousands each and every week. May take up catfishing.

I have been fishing out of a skiff for bass since 2018. The best system no one utilizes is a fish basket. When we are traveling with the family we have a Ranger bass boat and a Piranha skiff. When we head in I can pull my catch out of the water and transfer to the Ranger for travel. If everyone used a better designed fish basket that was easily transferred from water to lifewell for traveling there would be no dead fish. I have never lost one to mortality swimming 🏊 n the lake it was caught out of. Just saying. A company should make a better fish basket that works inside lifewells like mine does.

I was just sitting here thinking about what the tournament guys do when they catch a giant and it’s gotten hooked in the gills and pouring blood. It happens to everyone, but don’t you get fined for dead fish? How’s that work? P.S. right after I left the comment, you talked about it…..but still there’s times when they die in minutes, so what then?

Feels like Bassmaster is like a fishing club. The old guys do the stuff that is about organizing and governance and all the young guys just want to fish and be cool. Not optimistic that the trade of professional bass fishing has a real chance to survive. I do think the box that finds the fish called FFS is the kill shot. Why fish if I can have an electronic box find fish for me. And if it’s electronic based I can do electronics at home. I can’t explain it but I lost all my mojo to buy lures and read about how guys won tournaments and found fish in past year. I can’t help how I’d feel and I know it’s not just me. My boat still has tarp on it in my driveway this year.

@@Theburningseason even the DNR usually won’t fine you for a fish that’s only like 1/16 under . Any decently ran tournament will check the length on any fish close to the length limit. So why would an angler intentionally bring one to the scales. They are also penalized for doing so. Disqualifications happen when you intentionally break a law . Or you gain an advantage by breaking the law . As a general rule of thumb.
You just sound like a Karen. Why would you even be concerned about this. It’s between the anglers , BASS and the DNR . But you seem to be the only one concerned about it.

The state that has the WORST bass fishery program in the country has to hands down be Utah. Which is a shame since we have the Colorado running through our state, and the Colorado has produced some good lakes down in Nevada and AZ, but man our lakes got stocked literally ONE time with bass when the reservoirs were built and haven't been touched since. Flaming Gorge on the Wyoming border, the UT side is HORRIBLE compared to the WY side for Smallmouth. WY shut down live weigh tournaments for a LONG time to try and rebound their smallmouth, which worked incredibly well, last time I was on the WY side of Flaming Gorge my average smallmouth was probably around 3 pounds, I had a 6 and a bunch of 4s, then some smaller ones of course. There was an article on Bassmaster about it WY shutting down live weigh tournaments there actually.

Gene’s pyramid concept was good. Another example why catch, weigh, and release is better for the fish. The tourney folks cull the smallest and keep the biggest. The smaller ones have a better chance to survive then the one being held.

What about mandatory educational seminars on this? Where you earn a card, like a boater safety card, and it’s needed to fish sanctioned tournaments? Then the angler must uphold the responsibility out there on the water. Can’t control delayed mortality. But if an angler brings in dead fish time and time again. Stiffer penalties than just weight. I’m all for it.

Spraying is not the same topic, thats state regulators, not up to bass… fish care is important, bass does a outstanding job on fish care at the tanks! As a angler its your job to take care of the fish tell its back in the water… considering back in the day fish were held on stringers, most those fish never made it back to the lake.. I think bass has done well.
