  • When the Bible mentions the “will of God,” is it always describing the same thing? From one of our live events, R.C. Sproul considers the several ways we are to understand God’s will in Scripture.

    another interesting question is, how many wills do we have?
    one will?
    multiple wills?
    a good and a bad will?
    can we change our will?
    or do we have to choose between one will or the other?
    are we even in control of our “will” if we can’t change it?
    can we resist our will?
    does denying our “will” mean that it wasn’t really our will, but instead it was our will to deny our “will” ?
    idk.

      If I told you how your will should be, knew what you thought, and corrected you for the rest of your life, "wouldn't that be a form of mind control?"

  • @aaronman3352

    The word "will" is translated from a couple Greek words. Ultimately, they all mean "desire" or "want" whether informed or uninformed. So in our western world it's weird to say "Humans have two wills, a good and a bad" but not to say "I have to desires. One desire to do good and one to do bad." or 3 desires, 4, 5, 6. But you'd never say "3 wills, 4, 5, 6". They mean the exact same thing.
    The will isn't a component of the soul. It's just desire. And we all have competing desires (wills) in ourselves.

    So help me understand. He’s saying the Lord “is not willing that any (of us) should perish” is talking about believers?

    • @thomasnorton4610
      @thomasnorton4610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes. No believer shall be lost from the Lord's hand (Philippians 1:6, John 10:28).

    • @SupralapSaiyan
      @SupralapSaiyan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes in 2Peter3:9 the "any" and "all" that God is not willing perish but should reach repentance is the "you" He's patient toward. The "you/any/all" are the "beloved" in verses 8&1, these are Christians. The "beloved/you/any/all" are distinguished from the "ungodly/scoffers/unstable/they/their" in which the earth is being stored up in fire for their judgment. God is most certainly willing that the wicked face judgment. Just follow the pronouns to what's being said to and about whom.

    Why does God command things like an eye for an eye or genocide when that's clearly against His perfect will?

    I appreciate RC Sproul breaking it down the way he does here. We tend to oversimplify the concept of "will" and objectify it as a thing that someone possesses. We oversimplify it by generally thinking of it as what someone wants and affixing decisions to action as the outworking of that very simple "want". There's far more to the idea of "will" than that.
    What we refer to as God's Sovereign will being that which he decrees to pass is not an ability we have in any respect in the magnitude of God's capacity. God creates all things and as such his determining creativeness in no way is affected by anything he creates. He creates all things and sustains all things from beginning to end by no condition from creation. In contrast, we have no knowledge or understanding of anything outside of God's created order for there is nothing outside of his created order. Every determination of our heart and mind is conditioned on only that which is created by God.
    From God's sovereign will comes God's prescriptive will. This is a definition of God's nature in his demands on his creation. We can call these commands, for so they necessarily are presented to us, but they are ethical and immoveable for God's character doesn't change. We aren't God and we don't have the right to make these kinds of demands on others aside from the establishment of governing authorities decreed by God. These creaturely edicts either align themselves with God's commands or they don't, but God's commands are the standard.
    From God's character is his disposition. This is what God likes or dislikes, what he loves or hates. This shouldn't be confused with any movement to action, but is revealed in certain commands of disposition. We are commanded to love God and Sproul refers to here. We are also commanded not to covet. We think by not stealing that we are obeying the command, but if we never steal we may still covet and thus break God's law.
    These kinds of things are all interrelated, but they are different facets of self-aware thought. So will is not a thing to possess, but a series of capacities that is a feature of moral foundation (God) and agency (people made in his image).

    not complicated at all. He has one will, but calvinism has to make it two to make sense of no free will, etc. dangerous ground. God is not a liar or bipolar

    RC Sproul was totally wrong on His interpretation of this verse. He twists the words to fit the TULIP doctrine of reformed theology. If one reads the verses preceding and following 2 Peter 3:9, you will realize that the Holy Spirit, through Peter, is talking about the last days, and the return of Jesus Christ. What promise is the Lord not slow about? The 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. God is patient toward all men, and wishes that none should perish. He is giving time to unbelievers to make the decision to choose Him, or reject Him.

    Just get to the real point: (1 Timothy 2:3, 4) This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Savior, God, WHOSE WILL IS that all sorts of people should be saved and come to an ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH.
    Truth does NOT include the teaching of hell, that is a strictly pagan concept and has no place in Christianity. Any preacher promoting such a lie does not have God's approval.

    His attributes conflict, his wrath his mercy, he's a jealous god ,created man in his image didn't turn out so well, made everything heaven and hell, says he loves you but may send you there. Your choice, not his fault when comes to clarity, the bible doesn't communicate well, how many Christian denominations are there? So lets not begin to describe his perfection, lets give him a bunch of wills to patch up his word as we cherry pick the bible and make the bribe sound better. Not convinced.
