Diana always sings well with others; trademark of a good singer. She blends so well with Ms. Waters’s nice voice for she is listening to her, before she responds. I even noticed that when she was humming with her mouth open, her volume got louder & Ms. Waters gently tap her arm. Diana quickly adjusts & hums with a closed mouth & lowers her voice. That’s harmony, reverence, & control. Whoever she sings with, the song & performance is usu. a hit for she isn’t trying to compete vs. complement.
Ethel Waters, when she was singing with Diana Ross was like a sweet and affectionate Aunt. So dear, so gracious. And then Miss Waters gave such a tremendous and heart-wrenching performance of "Suppertime." She makes the old adage "They don't make them like that anymore" very true indeed.
Ethel and Diana are absolutely charming! They have a wonderful sound together. These old Hollywood Palaces are filled with treasures - and this sequence is pure gold.
Ah to have seen the great Ethel Waters live on stage in the twenties and thirties at the height of her career. Even here in her golden years with dimming voice she is a a dramatic vessel nonpareil.
Miss Waters was in her 70's & is so kind & loving to Miss Ross who is now 76 & hasn't aged in the last 20 years! This clip is a beautiful moment in time for all times!
Any other Black R&B singers would have tried to out-sing and yell over Ms. Waters. Whomever she sings with, the song & performance is usually a hit for she isn’t trying to compete, but. complement them. The ol' lady appreciated that at the end too.
Diana Ross was a devotee and student of the great African-American artists from her childhood on. She studied what they did and how they did it, she learned from and she gained an invaluable knowledge of them and their art. When she was filming "Lady Sings the Blues" she said if she died it wouldn't be her own life which passed before her eyes but Billie Holiday's.
I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE OSCAR'S THAT YEAR HOW SHE WAS ROBBED OF THE OSCAR. SHE WAS STUNNING IN LADY SINGS THE BLUES. A BETTER ACTRESS THAN SINGER IN MY OPINION YET SHE NEVER REALLY STUCK WITH IT. A SHAME REALLY.
"I've got everything you've got and a whole lot more." Ethel Waters' great line from Cabin in the Sky. She could really sing with feeling and that smile, it would melt the coldest heart.
Ms. Ethel Waters is the same category as Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Count Basie, Cab Galloway, Louie Armstrong and all of those that paved the way for new comers like Diane Ross who benefited from their contributions!
BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOOOOOOOOVE IT!! Ethel Waters was not only a PHENOMENAL singer but an AMAZING actress as well!! It's AMAZING to see Diana Ross, this young, and Ethel Waters together...I LOOOVED the duo that they did together! Just BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank You So Much for posting this. Listening to Ms Waters sing Berlin's 'Suppertime' was a great risk, when it was initially performed and cut out of every theatre south of Baltimore. Most unfortunately, sadly...the song is as apropos today as it was when it was written. People still being lynched/murdered for being simply who they are and still wive's, mother's, parents, children, singing the same sentiments sung here in this song and feeling the same grief. So much for social progress in USA!
But she did, when she was on Broadway. Hollywood would have been impossible at the time, and is still difficult, but Broadway embraced her, especially (and you can see the film with her in it, playing the same role), in "A Member of the Wedding", with Julie Harris. When she opens those arms and embraces Harris, you can just feel the love. Also, on film, 'Cabin in the Sky' which she did with Lena Horne as the 'bad girl' making famous the classic, 'Taking a Chance on Love.' She made a difference.
I agree. I hope the original TV show included Ms. Waters' face for the first half of "Suppertime" (and that it is only cut off due to the formatting of this TV show for TH-cam...)
It's been said that Ethel was one of the meanest woman in show business. Difficult as Diana Ross. It is a measure to their talent that they both come across as so sweet in this clip. That's talent!
Mom and grand mom loved Ms Waters, all of them are gone, grandma was a little older than Ms Waters a couple yrs older, Ms Waters died in 1977, Grandma died in 1973, mom died 1996
Its interesting that Diana Ross is now about the same age that Ethel Waters was then but does not look much different today then she did then. People tend to age better these days.
Thing is that you know deep down, when she talks about all that she wants to cook .... not only can she cook it ... chances are she cooked many of those items possibly that week.
I meant crazy as in fox. Your grandmother's account matches exactly what I have read. Legendary George Wein ( founder of Newport Jazz & Folk Fests) wrote about her awful attitude; yet he wanted the best opportunies for her in her later years because he had such huge respect for her talent. He thinks her legacy is totally underated because of all the folks she p'd off. Listen to her duet w. DR (without watchin) and her musical lines are killer even if the voice is weakened.
daniel stanwyck They probably did it on purpose. I find it hard to believe that an experienced camera person would make such an amateur move like that.
This is so appropriate... its not a secret now that Ethel Waters was a lesbian... which u unfortunately had to keep secret way back then. Both have very fine controlled singing voices

Ethel Waters was a magical performer. A true legend of her time.

What a beautiful woman with such talent and such heart :) She exudes so much motherly love towards Diana. It is touching xxx

What a lovely, insightful comment. Thank you.
True ❤️🖤💚 because she's a real "lady"🥰❤️🖤💚
What A Great Performance Mrs. Ethel Waters & Diana Ross. 2 Great Performars ❤❤❤.
Both great singers. Ethel Waters' "Stormy Weather" is timeless.
Such wonderful affection for each other. Thank you.

True that's what makes her great she learned from the greatest 🥰❤️🖤💚
@@MICHGO1not need to compare she is simply a triple threat. They don’t make them like her anymore. Excellent in all areas.
if Miss Waters were alive today, she would OWN Hollywood and the NY stage!
"I've got everything you've got and a whole lot more." Ethel Waters' great line from Cabin in the Sky. She could really sing with feeling and that smile, it would melt the coldest heart.
ETHEL WAS ENJOYING HER SOME DIANA.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN AMAZING TO EXPERIENCE ETHEL SINGING SUPPER TIME IN PERSON.

There are no words for this. Just imagine how long ago this was, now miss Ross is nearly 76 and the age of miss Waters in those old days
I love this woman we can all learn a thing or two from her ,don't forget her!!!!!!!
Just breathtaking....
respectable lady, smiling like young girl
Wonderful lady I have known her story for years she is very special
Loved her since I was a kid when she was on tv as Beulah! She is in the Parthenon of singers..Piaf, waters, callas, Bessie, ella !
Bread and gravy - Hoagy Carmichael.
Ethal Waters was arguably the best singer at her time.
Wonderful and touching beyond words.
Absolutely voices of angels ... My next movie !
Omg what a beautiful smile from Ethel. Very touching.
A moving performance by Ethel Waters!
Love Miss. Waters, RIH!
She's great !

One word...WOW!
Really precious! It brought tears to my eyes.

I think she was mostly a fun-loving party girl at heart, but I'm grateful for this beautifully-performed contribution to the movement

Ethel could really hit the low notes great and the high ones too plus talk through the song great . Most singers can’t do that.
Gloria Aleluia
What an awesome voice and awesome woman. I think that when the stage manager yelled suppertime though, the cameraman left the stage. What the hell?
I agree. I hope the original TV show included Ms. Waters' face for the first half of "Suppertime" (and that it is only cut off due to the formatting of this TV show for TH-cam...)
some need others to find hope.......
A Very well practiced performance.
Must be hard to sing Suppertime. One of those songs when done right it takes a while to recover from. Glad to see Miss Waters do it, though.
It's been said that Ethel was one of the meanest woman in show business. Difficult as Diana Ross. It is a measure to their talent that they both come across as so sweet in this clip. That's talent!
chauncey bloom Talented women for sure, but mean and difficult applied to women in the business often was just strong and willful.
Mom and grand mom loved Ms Waters, all of them are gone, grandma was a little older than Ms Waters a couple yrs older, Ms Waters died in 1977, Grandma died in 1973, mom died 1996
May youth not despise the wisdom and teachings of our learned elders in Jesus Name...
Its interesting that Diana Ross is now about the same age that Ethel Waters was then but does not look much different today then she did then. People tend to age better these days.
Ethel was mean and had a hard life; DR has the money and more to get the weaves, etc.
You have a point there.
Cosmetic surgery is probably much more common and popular nowadays.
That is VERY TRUE!
Thing is that you know deep down, when she talks about all that she wants to cook .... not only can she cook it ... chances are she cooked many of those items possibly that week.
Seriously? Haven't seen Dianna yet. And from what I saw on a doc about her and the Supremes, it was all about her
I meant crazy as in fox. Your grandmother's account matches exactly what I have read.

Maybe it's just up yours.
The great Ethel Waters reduced to half a head by the lousy camera man.

I have a feeling the cropping may have been done at some later point. Aspect ratio is also off.
