Great video and echoes my feelings about the RT3S entirely.
Did you ever do a video on how you finally got your head around programming the radio?
I'm really struggling to progress with it at the minute.
    Many thanks for sharing!

HAM 🤔 Amazing how it still exists. I have a friend with this set up from a shed in the back garden. Inside a big map of the world and hundreds of pins stuck in the country's where he had communicated. His wife and teenage daughter were embarrassed about the whole set up and antena 😂🤣😂.
The idea to have a conversation over thousands of miles.
But of course we all have smart phones thus making HAM obselete. Nostalgia is what keeps it all going 😊. BTW King Juan Carlos of Spain was and maybe still is a HAM radio operator 🌞
    Take care 🙏 🖐️

I still drive to the top of a hill, meet a bunch of friends, put a great big aerial up and start communicating around the world... all just for fun! Other people's wife's and teenage daughters visit and make encouraging noises! 😀😃

I think DMR hotspots are still radio in a way, but more modern. We're setting up small systems very similar to those commercial systems deployed by local services and busineses.
I was introduced to radio through listening to trunked commecrial systems, mainly the railway operators in my area, and their repeaters are connected through the internet just like our hotspots.
I think the introduction of hotspots is a similar paradigm shift to the introduction of repeaters. When repeaters were new, people felt that it wasn't radio enough, but now we see them as a common part of our radio experience.
Repeaters and hotspots dont take away from the fun of climbing to the top of a hill and making long range contacts, the excitement and satisfaction hasn't dissapeared; we just have new ways of making contacts with people!

Is it worth it? By the smile on your face yes for the nostalgia 😊

I’m with you, got my licence, my first radio ended up being the FT-726R then got a HT FT70D, but to me radio is more of a challenge being HF/VHF/UHF like my old CB days, if by a good chance the internet goes, only then will it all come back can’t Waite. Thanks for the videos, I’ll keep watching

I'm. Glad you've got a biggun! ... yup, CB was what started my journey many years ago... DMR is fun, you make some very interesting contacts, but there's nothing like actually having a chat on the air :-)

Yes it’s real radio requires challenging to get setup and for those writing Pistar applications. Just like echolink. The requirements for being a licensed ham radio. combined with APRS definitely has more Ham Radio aspects. Where the pioneers of Ham Radio experimented with hardware mostly. Yes connecting with the Hotspots is via RF. I’m new to DMR, YSF. 73 Steve de AA4SH Tennessee

It is real VOIP lol. I was dead against it but caved and bought a PI W 0 and built a hotspot. It works well as does the rest of the system but all my radios are off and have been for awhile.

I did some CB radio in the 80's, and I think this is kinda cool, BUT... I still don't know if we can call this real radio... Oh, well. Nice vid nonetheless!!

It's just not radio. Repeaters and a hot spot is a joke. Anything that is not ariel to ariel and nothing.

    • @DubiousEngineering
      @DubiousEngineering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah... Proper radio includes hard work, elevation and the satisfaction of actually making contact... That said, this selfish benefits if you don't have time to do it properly!!
